United L1011s

I know United acquired the TriStars from Pan Am's Pacific Division, but what routes did they fly?

For the brief time that they kept them, I think they flew exclusively on the old Asian/Pacific routes. My understanding was that UA did not want to go through upgrade/qualification training for UA pilots on planes that were going to be gotten rid of, so only the former PA pilots were qualified to fly them. This is all from memory, so someone else may have a little more accurate info.

I remember seeing them at SFO just after the UA takeover of PanAm's Pacific ops...I only ever remember seeing them with overall white body, United titles and the United logo on the tail. I guess they got rid of them really quickly! Where did they end up? Some of the Pan Am aircraft where converted to Tankers for the RAF.

United had 6 ex-Pan Am L-1011-500's and had them through 1987 when I believe Delta accquired them.

Some if not most of the United 1011's did carry full UA colors for a short while.

I have a postcard showing a UA L1011 at NRT.

I definitely know that United flew L1011-500's for a few years--in 1986 when I flew back from Japan, I flew an L1011-500 painted in full United colors on the NRT-SFO route. They were sold to Delta when United started to assign the 747-200's they owned to this route later.

I went through some old OAG's and found the US routes limited to SFO-Tapei, and SFO-NRT. Other than that they were all used strictly within Asia.

There was a photo of one in full UAL colors landing on the UAL website. I do not know if it still there. It was under a section of their fleet page entitled, I think, historic aircraft.

The 7/87 OAG shows a TriStar SFO-Osaka-- I think that's what United inaugurated the route with. I vaguely recall an SFO-JFK TriStar, but maybe I'm thinking of Pan Am.

Here's a link to a picture from United's website of a Tristar in full United colors: http://ual.com/site/primary/0,10017,1426,00.html
