Flying On Christmas Day?

Tue Dec 05, 2006 8:09 am

Greetings and Happy Holidays.

Are you flying Christmas Day? Christmas Eve? Where are you going and what airline are you flying?

Working for an airline, it's super hard to get days off around the peak season, so I'm forced to fly super early Christmas Day.

Will be spending a few days with the parents in Southern California.

AA #1660 AUS-DFW
AA #359 DFW-SNA

Remember if your flying to be a little extra nice to the airline folks working on the holiday. I'm taking a few gifts for the AA staff to help their shift go by quicker.

Seasons Greetings!!!

I've flown on Christmas day before and may end up doing so again this year. We are booked to fly Tuesday morning to PHX from LAX but since we now decided to go to the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco we will now likely be leaving Christmas day so that we can spend two days down in PHX.

I flew last year on Christmas day and may end up doing the same thing again this year...

Last year I gave everyone I could -- check in agents, gate agents, flight attendants, pilots, a "Thank you" card expressing my broad appreciaction for their contribution to making Continental such a great airline to fly, and my specific appreciaction for them spending time away from their friends and family on the holiday so that I could spend time with mine.

They were very well received, in fact, I think the response did more than anything else to put me in the "Christmas spirit".

When I used to travel for the holidays to visit my family (SFO or SJC to MSN) on NW, I almost exclusively flew the red-eye on Christmas Eve. I made it a point to buy some boxes of chocolate for both flight crews.

To me, it just feels good to thank those people who have to work on a holiday.

I will be flying on Christmas this year... on Comair 5537 CMH-JFK and then El Al flight LY002 from JFK to TLV. I will of course wish Merry Christmas to the Comair and Delta crews then Happy Chanukah to the El Al employees.

Chanukah ends on the 23rd this year (at sundown) so it doesn't coincide with Christmas.

Also, I have heard some bad things about El Al recently so I'd be very interested in knowing how your voyage with them is.

You're right. The erev is on the 15th. I lost track of the calendar.

I hope that El Al's financial problems will not affect their service.

Nope, but been there and done that, not funny, everyone and his dog is apparently traveling at the Christmas days.

This year I'll be traveling on New Year's Eve, never done that before. I am curious if it is better than Christmas Eve/Day or New Year's Day.  Wink

I hope that I'll be coming back from EZE on Christmas Eve night, going to IAD on UA846. I have to find someone to work for me first, though... That week up to Christmas is going to be one busy but exciting week for me. And then Christmas day...to work!! YAY!

This year, my holiday travel is:

Frontier PHX-DEN-MSP
12/28
Continental MSP-EWR
1/3
Continental EWR-MSP
1/8
Frontier MSP-DEN-PHX

This year I will be spending the week of the 17-25 in Honolulu. I am flying back HNL-ORD in the afternoon on the 25th on UA. I like to give out those employee appreciation cards that UA sends me every so often and be extra courteous with the staff.

I'll be flying on Christmas Eve morning, ANC-PHX-LAX on America West (after flying AS FAI-ANC the night before). I'll be flying the reverse on New Year's Eve, and will be in the air at midnight, followed by sleeping in the ANC airport before I head back up to FAI. Wooo!

Nice touch, very classy move, Lincoln.

I'll be flying the whole weekend including Monday, Christmas Day. It's also my birthday. The FO mentioned it during the (cruise) P.A. enroute to SAT (1999) and I got "Happy Birthday" wishes from nearly every passenger as they deplaned.

I'm flying SEA-LHR on Christmas Eve will transfer in LHR to a flight to BLR on Christmas day. So I'll be flying over the holiday and will make sure to be extra nice to the crew. Hopefully the planes will be empty and everyone will be in a good spirit. I flew on Christmas last year on Air New Zealand and that was a good experience. I flew AA on Christmas day and that wasn't quite as friendly before.

That could be fun, flying inbound to PHX the day of the BCS Championship. Hopefully people will have flown in the day before, but the stragglers will be flying in that day. If you have afternoon/evening flights, you wouldn't have a problem.

My family was going to fly TUS-ATL-CAK on Christmas Day, but we decided to go before Christmas to see more family (and pay outrageous before Christmas fares  Angry ) so now we are flying PHX-CLE-PHX on 12/22 and 12/31. We are returning the day before the Fiesta Bowl, but I don't think Ohio residents are interested in that game.

On Christmas Eve, I'm flying:
Las Vegas-Denver (Frontier 778)
Denver-Los Angeles (Frontier 406)
Denver-San Francisco (Frontier 11)

On Christmas Day, I've got:
San Francisco-Los Angeles (Frontier 10)

Luckily, one of my fellow crew members on this 4-day sequence is a good friend of mine, so it's shaping up to be a fun Christmas on the road.
It's an entirely different kind of flying; all together.

Im not flying on christmas this year but i have done in the past. NW/CO DTW-IAH-TUS-CLE-DTW. I handed the crew a couple gifts on my first flight and i must say it was one of the best experiences ive had. Everything seems 100 times better on Christmas. I hope that everyone flying this Christmas has a safe and wonderful trip!  santahat

Yesir, back in 2002 with the folks to AKL via LAX on Dec 31. It was told to us by parents friends that AKL has great night light life on New Year's Eve/Day since its one of the first cities to ring in the New Year!

If not this year, tell us about the past years traveling on Christmas/Eve, New Year's/Eve!  Smile

One of my favourite flights was a few years back. December 31 departed Singapore for Tokyo and celebrated the New Year inflight in First so there was a lot of celebration - gotta love Singapore Airlines. Then I spent all day in Tokyo - being January 1. That evening I departed Tokyo for Vancouver and crossed the international date line so it became December 31 for a while then January 1 again. Celebrated New Years again. I then landed in Vancouver the morning of January 1 to celebrate the day one more time.

This year - 3 weeks from now!!

12/24 - Air Canada
YMM/YEG
(spending Christmas eve in a hotel - but oh well worth it)

12/25 - Delta Airlines
YEG/SLC/LAX
(spending Christmas in a hotel in LA - but oh well worth it)

12/26 - Delta Airlines
LAX/ATL/EZE
(arrive 12/27)

12/28 - Austral Airlines
AEP/USH

Then it's off by ship to Antarctica! Celebrating New Years on the Great White Continent.

01/07 - Austral Airlines
USH/AEP

01/08 - Air Canada
EZE/SCL
(yeah - a bit wierd flying Air Canada between 2 cities in South America)

01/11 - Air Canada
SCL/EZE

01/13 - Delta Airlines
EZE/ATL/LAX
(arrive 01/14)

01/14 - Delta Airlines
LAX/SCL/YEG

01/15 - Air Canada
YEG/YMM

Those are my plans.

Looking forward to spring when I am planning on a flight with the originator of this thread. Watch for our trip report with a twist!

Cheers!
Len

I'll be working as well, but no humbug here. I typically don't go all out for Christmas and this year won't be any exception. My immediate family gathers for a few gifts exchanged then we eat a meal together. It's more about that than anything else. I'll be leaving work around 0630 on the 25th and taking the hour and a half drive to my Mother's (weather permitting).

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays/whatever you celebrate to you all, though  Smile

Christmas night in the air for me, YUL-ZRH-GVA on LX.

Did the same thing on AF last year, "cheap" fares, A340, and full flight. And a not-so-nice Christmas morning stranded at that infamous CDG waiting for my new flight, having missed a tight connection.
Then , having your luggage waiting for you in one piece on the carousel is a good Christmas present in those circumstances...

My drilling rig will be working in the foothills of Alberta through Christmas this year. Digging for fuel to keep these birds in the air, and furnaces fired up. When someone goes out of their way to show a little appreciation for those of us who have to be away from home during this time, it makes us feel very good.

Ended up getting great deals on those flights because I'm flying on or the day before a major holiday.
