Olympic Airways?

Mon Dec 11, 2006 11:39 am

Olympic airways has left me in suspense for a long time . Just wondering is any of you had knowledge of the following :

Will they ever purchase a jumbo again ?

Will they upgrade their current livery ?

I know there are rumors they will now change their current name is "pantheon"
can anyone confirm this ?

thanks

OA just now posted their 2005 financial numbers. Unfortunately its gone from bad to worse.

Olympic Airlines Loss Widens
December 10, 2006

Greece's ailing state carrier Olympic Airlines, posted a net loss of EUR123.7 million (USD$163.4 million) for 2005, based on financial statements published in Greek newspapers.

Olympic reported sales of EUR715.2 million (USD$944.9 million) in 2005, up from EUR642.8 million (USD$849.2 million) a year earlier. But its losses widened from EUR87 million (USD$114.9 million) in 2004.

Olympic Airways maybe will never recovery from the present's days. They've lost a lot of money with competiton and bad administration.
They had an A340-300 aircraft, one or two, i'm not sure...
And another airline borned in Greece for competion, is Ciel airlines which is in process of formation, they will choose the Airbus A340 or Boeing 777-200 for some long haul routes.

Olympic Airways was in the past a glory for Greece. Unfortunatelly the past days will never back again. Olympic Airlines, a tentative of reformation, a restructure for the old Olympic have failed, was unglory.

Regards.

Thanks for the info .

Any word on when OA will cease operations ?

You mentioned CIEL airlines . Will long haul flights for this new carrier mirror OAs current flight path ? I would love to see this carrier at YUL one day .

Thanks

OA just needs to die, finally. The problem is that Greece still wants a local branded flag carrier. They are going to have to take a look at Sabena. Belgium now has a stable local airlines (SN Brussels) but it took a while for the industry to get it together. The same will happen in Greece. My experience with OA is that the customer service is the pits with often old and almost universally filthy aircraft. The logo is the pits too! It is such a blatant rip off of the Olympic rings that doesn't convey any message except that it is just a rip off of the Olympic rings.

Given that the Olympics were created in Greece, and Olympic Airways is a Greek airline, I can see the synergies there. and I don't think it's a rip off.

Are airlines that use the national emblem or native birds etc accused of doing the same?

Companies do not need to go bankrupt for changes occur in a market.
A reengineering can be done inside OA with no pain for the society.
The biggest trouble of OA (in the same way of any other ailing companies) refers to its governance; many of its business processes are running in wrong way and this mistake is what needs to die.

I agree , the service is terrible . I myself am greek and would not fly with them until they change their current fleet . Their long hauls from YUL are fine since the A340-300 they have are quite new ,unfortunately I cannot say the same thing about their short haul fleet . They still operate very old 737-400 and turboprops . Going to the islands from ATH is a nightmare ...

Can anyone confirm the comment made about CIEL ?

is this for real ?

thanks

Yes indeed, I read on the greek paper twice about this airline. I dont trust what i read unless i see it happen. Throughout the years, I ve read hundreds of business plans of greek start-up airlines and in 99% of the cases, those plans remained plans-only  Smile

True and sad that it happens.

Full privatisation, network & personnel restructuring, short-haul fleet renewal are necessary for OA.

Not at all. Despite the good load factors the route was unprofitable due to the high fixed costs. Also bear in mind that VFR routes are usually low yield routes.

Indeed! During the short lived BA/Speedwings management of the airline, it was revealed that the OZ route alone accounted for 1/3 of OA's yearly losses.

Could OA and AZ join the same parent company?
The thread Alitalia May Dump Skyteam: EUR200m Penalty Is Fine tells that an AZ/AP merger could occur instead of AZ/AF/KL.
Gruppo Toto is the current holding of AP and if they considered not only AZ, but also OA, they would benefit a lot their international network.

1999/2000 - They dropped MEL, and only flew to SYD, then reinstated both, then dropped both.

and no, the service was not the most profitable...

market was very seasonal, with most traffic june-sept. outside of these times, very average loads, as OA did not promote or utilise its network to seel to non-Greeks.

all Y class traffic at very low or non-existant yields. J pax were upgraded friends and relatives

SQ, TG and EK all had matching or higher frequencies with superior inflight service.

costs! crew layover in Australia was 7 days!! and the airline flew 3 times weekly. Strong unions. during the time EK would arrive 1am, and crew would go out 8pm... but not for OA!!

I have to disagree. I fly JFK-ATH, ATH-SKG, ATH-Kavala, I have no problem with OA's service. The JFK-ATH service is very good. ATH-SKG is only a 1/2 hour flight, can't expect much.

The fleet is not that old. the 737-400 were built early 90's, the turbo props like the Dash-8 are a couple of years old.

The age of OA fleet is not the problem because OA maintenance is one of the best. Their safety record proves that.  bigthumbsup

Im sorry but that is the biggest load of rubbish i have seen so far on these boards!!!! As Greece is home to the Olympic games it is a major symbol which was adopted by the national carrier and it is a strong brand and a great logo. The aircraft are clean and well maintained and OA has one of the best safety records in the world. The service is a mixed bag but on the whole has improved alot. OA will proberbly die but thousands will mourn its loss. In Greece its a matter of pride and they are not like the American carriers who would sell their grandmother to the right bidder!!! To say the logo is the pits is utter rubbish and insulting. Read the trip report of the A340 from LHR to ATH for a REAL version of OA's current service and A/C comfort.

OA's problem is years of government corruption and politians giving free tickets to anyone that would vote for them!! Managers from Athens sending in milk receipts to accounts for refund!!! Two ticket counter staff changing a printer roll....I could go on . This shouldnt have been allowed to happen and it makes me sad and angry that such a great product like OA is going to be ruined. I hope there is a chance to save OA still but im realistic. I think Agean will be the next flag carrier of Greece.

That person was retired from the airline when the Socialist party came back and was replaced by someone who had never worked in anything related to an airline before! so there is your source smart a$$.
If you guys dont know what your talking about, then dont reply in the discusion. OA has nothing wrong with their aircraft, their service is good, and so are their pilots.

If im not mistaken there are MANY airlines in Europe and the US that operate the 737-400. AND since when is flying a turboprop bad???... Plus these aircraft MUST be in regulation to be allowed to fly...

rubbish!
let me give you some history lessons.
OA was founded by greek ship-magnate Aristotle Onassis , in April 1957.
Onassis's entire group of companies , were named after the word Olympic long before that.
ie olympic maritime , olympic tankers , etc. His tankers had (and still do , under the onassis foundation) the word Olympic in the name , ie olympic glory , olympic eagle etc.
so he named the airline part of his business olympic airlines.
a blatant rip of the olympic rings was what coca cola did with the atlanta games in '96 , and not a greek company using the rings (since the 1940's) my friend....

While some of you might be proud of OA, its nothing more than an embarrassment for Greece in my view. Both the airline, and the drama the Greek government has allowed to fester these many years.

The country which has a successful maritime industry deserves a respectable airline as well. With some luck Aegean will continue its growth path and will manage by defacto become a respectable, modern and progressive face of Greek aviation.

I was already wondering how they survived even this far. Their problems have always been existing more or less and the competition has been somewhat noticeable at least.

How many of you remember these airlines?

They existed and now they're gone. Olympic has always been around, but then again it gets funds from the government. You think it's a surprise OA is going to be ceased with after all this years of bad business?

And what about Aegean Airlines who are doing a very good business and they're service is good, the flights are on time and they also keep their aircraft in better shape than OA. I can't even remember how many delays and cancellations I've seen with OA, but the number is huge.

I really hope OA could climb up again from the pit where it is now, but that would be a long way.

OA is not in a pit as you put it , yes it is in very bad financial condition and maybe past saving but the staff still keep their heads high and offer a professional service and will do until the end if this has to happen. If OA does go down it will always be remembered as a part of Greece and Greek history. The memories can never be taken away and anyone who is Greek who doesnt really care about OA then the saying goes ''You dont know what you have lost until its gone''

I have flown OA enough times to be able to make a judgement.

Inflight service, out of more than 10 sectors with them, only one was good, and that good service was provided by only 1 crew in the business class cabin. The other crew who was working with her in the cabin was simply nonchalant and rude to all passengers. On all other flights, crew disappeared immediately after the meal service. On a particular flight, I needed a drink and walked to the galley to ask for one. The crew were smoking in the galley said "ok, I'll bring it to you"..so I told her my seat number and returned to my seat. No crew ever left the galley and I never got my drink till the next meal service.

On another flight, a passenger puked on the cabin floor. Instead of helping to clean up the mess, the matronly crew went to the sick passenger and started scolding him in front of all the other passengers. She was scolding in Greek, so I had no idea what was said. But anyone could tell from her tone that she wasn't happy with the mess. And to top it off, the puke on the floor was left unattended throughout the flight causing a major stink throughout the cabin!

Aircraft cleanliness - toilets were never cleaned during the flight. Towards the end of an 8 hour flight, most toilets were already choked with toilet paper, and the smell of urine and faeces. Toilet papers and tissues were never replenished during the flight. It was shocking.

That said, food on OA was always good and plentiful. And the landings were always smooth.

I cannot fathom how anyone can say that OA's inflight service is consistently great!??

Oh last but not least, OA is the only airline I've ever flown where the crew are the first to dash off the plane after arrival...leaving the local ground staff to handle the disembarkation of passengers.
There's always a better way to fly...

This is not true and you are mistaken my friend, this never happens . I fly OA enough to know if this was happening and it NEVER has. I have done many long haul and EU flights with OA and never saw this.

I have said that the service is a mixed bag but mostly I find it good but I could complain about BA/LX/UA as Ive had more bad experiences with them than OA so I dont think you can say OA is so bad. SQ its not but its not FR either. My last BA flight the toilet was closed due to it being out of order. I asked a cabin attendant for a drink in C class on UA and it never came either so I just went up again and told them to give it to me there and then , end of story.

If that was so, I would have helped myself to whatever was available in the galley. Unfortunately, there was nothing available except a bunch of crew crowding around chatting and smoking.

Quoting Olympic707 (Reply 31):
I have never seen a spotless toilet on any airplane.
If you don't see toilet paper, as for it.

Have you ever flown asian carriers? On these carriers crew regularly replenish and clean the lavatories throughout the flight.

Quoting Olympic707 (Reply 31):
Yuk! vomit If this was an adult, he deserved it! I would cussed him out too and make him clean it up!
That is what a puke bag is for.

You're probably used to seeing crew cussing passengers on airlines where you come from. I guess I'm just used to polite and helpful service in the region where I come from. I've been on carriers where passengers create a mess of their seat, and the crew do all they can to clean it up, lay a blanket over the soiled seat so that the guilty passenger can sit comfortably if no other seats are available. It's quite unthinkable for the crew to do nothing about such things.

Quoting Olympic707 (Reply 31):
I never had problems. With all those complaints about OA, the same people pack those planes full.

Probably because OA offers the cheapest fares? If the planes are full, I really wonder why they aren't making money.

Quoting SQ772 (Reply 29):
Oh last but not least, OA is the only airline I've ever flown where the crew are the first to dash off the plane after arrival...leaving the local ground staff to handle the disembarkation of passengers.

Wrong. I never seen that. Pilots and crew always thanked you for flying OA. Mostly in Greek.

You had better crew on your flights then...

Which just goes to show how inconsistent OA's inflight service is...

No he didn't! People become sick for a variety of reasons and are not always able to reach for a sick bag before it hits them. It doesn't matter whether the sick passenger is an adult or a child, the proper response to this is not to cus someone out but to be compassionate and try to help out the sick passenger. My guess is that the passenger was already fairly embarassed at what had happened and was made to feel even more so by having the FA yell at him and bring unecessary attention to the situation.

Clean lavs are not just a feature of Asian carriers. I know of several EU carriers where policy dictates that lavs be checked for cleanliness, etc. every 30 mins or so.

As no one has any response in front of that question, I bring another one:
would be at least good for OA and AZ start a code-share agreement?

If the passenger is totally disabled I would agree with you. If the passenger pukes on the floor and sits there and does not make an attempt / help to clean it up than he is a disrespectful slob, period!
How would you like someone to visit your house and puke on your floor then sit there and to nothing?

Toilets get dirty between cleanings.

AZ is all OA needs to help it collapse!!! It would be a disaster for OA . AZ is not a strong carrier. If OA is to try get better financially it would need to look for a strong partner that needs Athens as a strategic transit/transfer point.

On another note im in the Swissport lounge in ATH as we speak. I have to say it is very nice , free Net access with proper PC's and big bar with food and drink. Not as nice as the OA lounge but still nice.

The Swiss check in staff need training though as I have a Gold Senetor card and checked in with 36 kilos on a Y ticket. He said he would let me off the excess baggage!!! Well I had 40 kilos anyway so he was wrong, but I didnt say anything.

Its sad to be leaving ATH again , I hope to be back soon . At least I have 5 kilos of Melomakarona to keep me going !!!!

Ok, I guess on OA, an 8 hour flight is considered short then. But that still doesn't answer why I was asked to return to my seat and told that my drink will come shortly. The request was not made just after take off, or moments before landing by the way, or during turbulence...

I would assume a person who is perfectly fit and well would not be puking on the floor would he? If I had a guest who came to my home and puked on my floor, I would first ask if he/she is alright... not yell at him/her for dirtying my floor. Then I would clean it up. I would not expect my guest to clean up the mess for me (I would appreciate it if he did, but wouldn't insist). He's afterall a guest. Are you telling me that in Greek culture, guests would be yelled at for falling ill and puking on my floor?

And for your info, the passenger was an elderly man... he wasn't disabled, he wasn't drunk nor was he a hooligan. Just an old man who was obviously not feeling too well.

Quoting Olympic707 (Reply 35):

Yes of course toilets do get dirty in between cleanings. But toilets that do not get cleaned at all throughout the flight remain dirty/smelly/messy all the time. And in case you argue that all toilets are supposed to smelly, well then you should fly on carriers with more professional crew. On SQ's long haul flights (any flight that is more than 4 hrs) for example, crew typically clean the toilets at regular intervals by wiping wet floors, replenishing towels, tissue, toilet papers, and finally spraying air freshener.

Everyone loves cheap fare - that I agree.
But you're obviously a firm supporter of OA, so I understand that you're not exactly objective when it comes to responding to my observations. I'm glad OA has given you stellar service. As for me, I've taken my business elsewhere to carriers where I am made to feel more welcomed - and everyone's happy at the end of the day.  Smile

What I mean by short flight, under 1 hour. I fly JFK - ATH and back and the galley has an assortment of drinks (different sodas, bottled water, tea / coffee) with a ice bucket and stack of cups. Beer and other alcohol drinks you must ask for it. I have seen a lady passenger wanted a can of Mythos (Greek beer) and the F/A gave her 4 cans!

Let me explain myself, I don't like puke. I don't like the sound, smell or being around it, etc. Me personally I would be upset if it happened around me.
People just don't puke all of the sudden. You start to feel bad, and hopefully that person heads towards the lav.
I was not there to see the situation, maybe the F/A did not cussed the man.
If I was there, I would say something to the F/A about getting it cleaned up.
About puking in your house floor, that person should have the courtesy to go to the bathroom or make a good attempt.

I have seen clean lavs, then later it is dirty, then clean again. I have seen OA F/A with gloves and a can of spray exiting the lav.

I never had problems with OA. Cheap fares, good and good amount of food. The most important thing for me is to arrive in one piece, OA's safety record proves that.  bigthumbsup

What strong partner would fits better to OA?
At least the reality have shown partners have to be equivalents to each other and have a balanced relationship.
AZ's network is indeed bigger than OA's, but OA's network reaches areas that AZ's does not and vice-versa.
I see OA could take AZ's passengers to Eastern destinations and AZ could take OA's passengers to Western destinations.

No, all OA needs is a very matchable partner, one that offers equity and faces similar challenges.
I see OA's and AZ's hubs can make mutual collaborations in the same way of LH's and LX's hubs (MXP could work like FRA, ATH like MUC and FCO like ZRH).

Just dont like the idea of AZ/OA !!! Sorry ....

In another lifeline , the court ruled that OA is to be paid back Eur563 in owed debts so if all goes well OA is out of the severe situation. OA always manages to survive!!! Good news just before Christmas.

What aircraft will OA use to HKG?
Are they going to use their A340s, or get more aircraft to fly that route?
OA has 4 A340s. The A340s are used for US, Canada and S. Africa. OA is short on aircraft, they will need to get more.

I was told the A340 is being taken off the LHR-ATH route which is very sad , it was unique to have a short haul operated by a A340!!! But I guess HKG will hopefully offer more benefit to the profits.

The A300 was used for the ATH-LHR route. I think OA has only 1 A300-600.
