ATH - JFK - ATH A 3rd Airline Could Be Possible?

Thu Dec 28, 2006 9:03 am

Do you think that another one airline for JFK could be possible eg

Dep ATH 09:00 - Arr JFK 12:35
Dep JFK 14:35 - Arr ATH 07:00

But also have a code share arrangement with A3 for domestic & SOF / OTP
because from SOF / OTP is not a direct service to JFK

What do you think

Another airline for ATH-JFK-ATH or JFK-ATH-JFK?  Confused I mean it is possible but it's a bit overkill is it not? There's the daily Delta B763 service in addition to the 5x a week Olympic A340. I wouldn't have thought there would be that much demand for a 3 times a day JFK run from ATH. What airline would you like to see operating another service from JFK?

A 3rd flight might be sustainable during the peak summer, however Greece is a very seasonal Atlantic market and would not be able to support anything close to a 3rd flight during majority of the year.

Maybe when 787 comes into the picture, then we might see this happening; from JFK or maybe LAX, or maybe ATL.

Delta has 2 daily ATH flights from JFK on a few days each week. I think, in total, there's 16 weekly flights. So yes, a third airline would definitely be overkill, although the loads are apparently quite good.

Not even close. During summer high season, DL operates 10 weekly flights on 763s, but that is only for around 4-6 weeks. From April-September, it is generally 1 daily flight, and during winter season, it's down to 4-5 weekly flights. Not to mention that their ATL-ATH, which doesn't operate during winter at all. Hence as Laxintl stated, US-Greece is very seasonal. A difference from 17 weekly flights to just 4 weekly flights is quite a difference.

The closest you'd probably get to that is CO adding EWR-ATH - JFK would seem to be pretty much Athensed out.

Yeah I agree ATH has enough NYC links. They would be better doing another US city but to be honest I think there are enough anyway to meet the current demand. As other poster said its seasonal.

But in From 1990 To 1999 was TW / DL / OA but i think DL fly from FRA with B722
connection flights and From 1991 To 1995 UA i think the load factor will be good
according to Greek immigrants live in NYC that is about 250,000.

Greece is not only a very seasonal Trans-Atlantic markets, its actually a shrinking one from the United States.

For example in 2005, OA experienced an average 77.6% load factors on its JFK service ranging from a a high of 94.5% in July to 48.6% in February. DL similarly had an annual load factor of 81.1% for the year with a peak of 94.7% in June and a low of 52.7% in February.

Overall arrivals totals from Greece into the US also have dropped significantly over the years to near 130,000 in 2005 compared to over 205,000 in 1995.

I think DL may operate SKG-JFK, something like 4-5 x week in addition to ATH flights

DL used to fly FRA to ATH on a A310 which was an old Pan Am one around 1992 I flew on it . It was a Tristar LGW to FRA. Great trip !!!! Shame they dont do it anymore. They also had FRA to SVO on a A310.
