### Air New Zealand Air Fares In 1969

I have just come across a 1969 Air New Zealand timetable and the fares table at the back make for some interesting reading and comparison to today’s prices. Here goes – all in NZ\$ and return fares.

AKL SYD

F \$212

Y \$163.30

AKLLAX[

F \$1171.60

Y \$834.10

AKLLHR

F 1975.20

Y \$1265.20

AKLNRT

F \$1306.40

Y \$945.50

AKLJNB

F \$1675.20

Y \$1250.20.

I am curious to find out the equivalent what these fares would cost in today’s NZ\$.

Interesting to note there was no APEX or the myriad fare rates that exist today.

AKLLAX

F \$15866.07

Y \$11295.57

AKLNRT

Going the other way - if things in 1969 were as low as they are today in economy; we'd have as follows...

AKL - SYD from \$16.52 O/W, \$33.03 return
AKL - LHR \$201 rtn
AKL - LAX \$131.76 rtn
AKL - NRT \$127.15 rtn.

And not forgetting that today we can get specials to London from about \$1700 (\$131.08) at times.

Meanwhile from 1950...
AKL or WLG to SYD was NZ£50/8- (\$2964.00 today) return, with a baggage allowance of 66lbs (30kg).
From 1951; AKL - SUV was NZ£55/16- (\$2975 today).
Each service was all First Class, on Short Solent Flying Boat with TEAL.
Economy Class for TEAL was introduced with the DC-6s in 1954.

From a historical perspective, we can't really complain that we are being short changed with airfares! It interests me though, how percentage-wise the economy and first class fares seemed closer back then than they are today - 33% difference on the SYD route between economy and first class in 1969.

Introduction of wide bodies, more fuel efficient aircrafts and cost cuts has certainly reduced the fares when in comparision to 1969

Back in 1969 it also took 1 year to save enough money for a return trip to LHR, considerig the pay back then

Compare those fares with Full Y fares only though. It's still expensive, but it is comparing like with like.

Sometimes I think a higher fare would weed out the rabble....  but money is money I guess.
