That and the A330 order. While important for Airbus, neither were surprising nor do they have greater implications for the market share balance. The BA order which some had been anticipating would have been more far-reaching.

AirAsia 50 + 50 A320s, SALE 20 A320s and the Grupo Marsans A330s all coming at about the same time add up to some pretty useful business for Airbus.

Not denying for a second that these are good orders but all "the Fanfare"??

We knew about Airasia, the Grupo Marsans is old news, and the Sale order was hardly major.

Airbus will need to talk with their PR Company about the need to not look desperate.

Possibly the PR company gets paid to organize press conferences and to make sure that press will be there when they have a press conference?

That is what they did. They are not responsible for reactions on Airliners.net.

I agree. These sales, the A320 ramp up was in the radio news as great news now - so they reached the audience.

What I did not read here, but heared in the radio news is that they also want to ramp up the wide body 330/340 production by two per month, seems they see more interest in already existing designs than they can deliver currently.

82 firm orders is a great day for anyone but I agree that they botched the timing of the release. A brief call from Leahy to Air Aisa to ask for some coordination would've been nice. As it is, it wasn't just the Forum that came away "disappointed", it seems like the mainstream media (in the US at least) had already run the "news". This is a small misstep by Airbus but definitely a great one compared to the ones of 2006, another 10 of these missteps and they'll be in superb shape.

Maybe Airbus hired the guy who muffed the Boeing announcement of QR's 777 order at Farnborough (sic). Big grin

QR placed a 20-frame 773ER and 772LR order, originally recorded as a UFO.

QR was to formally announce the order at the Farnborough Air Show however a Boeing media employee evidently "jumped the gun" and announced it on Boeing's website prior to QR's scheduled press event.

QR's Chairman took umbrage and cancelled the press event and made noises about the status of the order (which had been firmed behind the scenes prior to the event). There was speculation that QR might cancel the order over the incident, however QR eventually made it official a month or two later.

This "options" business is all smokes and mirrors. Options mean squat, it's just a way to double up the orders. An aircraft order is only the firm portion, not the option. So while Airbus had a good day yesterday, it was not a 140 orders they got but more like 80.

False... options are converted into firm orders more often than not.

They simply give the airline the flexibility to decide when to accept delivery in the future under simmilar terms as their firm order.

Quoting Naritaflyer (Reply 14):
So while Airbus had a good day yesterday, it was not a 140 orders they got but more like 80.

And no one claims Airbus won 140 orders. You could say Airbus signed contracts for up to 140 aircraft, but most media outlets would tend to report 80 firm and 60 options.
I have a three post per topic limit. You're welcome to have the last word.

From the Airbus press releases:

Quote:
Grupo Marsans... has signed a firm contract with Airbus on December 28th 2006 for the purchase of 12 A330-200 passenger aircraft, plus 10 options...

Quote:
Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise (SALE) has placed an order for twenty A320 Family aircraft, with an additional ten aircraft on option. The contract was signed at the end of December 2006.

Quote:
AirAsia, the region's largest low cost carrier, has placed a firm order for an additional 50 A320s, with a further 50 A320s on option. The contract was signed on the 8th of January 2007...

So apparently, the SALE and Grupo Marsans orders (32 firm) will be included in the Airbus totals for 2006, since the contract was signed in December, while the AirAsia order (50 firm) will be included in the totals for 2007.

It did somehow make it to the WSJ, so a lot of people important to Airbus will have seen it.
These peolple will have been thinking that there is a major order for 380's or a large 350 order, or even a small order for either from a signifigant airline.

IMO the collective wisdom of Ailiners .Net has been quite reliable in many cases.

In my time I.ve quite often had to agonise over the wording of press releases, advertisements, technical reports etc., and I've always been struck by how often a single word in the wrong place can make all the difference.

In this case the offending word was 'major'. If, instead, whoever made the statement had simply said ''significant', there would have been no hard feelings.........

Yes. That and two smaller orders (one for A330s and one for A320s).

Why? At this point, they are pretty desperate for somethign major to come along. With all the A380 delays and the airline getting pissed about that, along with some airlines cancelling those in favor of "other" planes, Airbus is getting pretty desperate.

Airbus announced 70 narrowbodies and 12 widebodies on monday including the first aircraft deal for 2007, sounds major enough to me. A BA deal would obviously have stolen more thunder, but I bet some people in Chicago would have loved to announce Air Asia's order instead of the people in Toulouse. As far as Airbus being pretty desperate is concerned... I'd have to laugh with that. Airbus sold 17 A380s in december, 7 A346s and announced several deals for A330s including Aercap (20), Pegasus (6), Qantas (4), Gruppo Marsans and the lease of 19 A330s to SQ.

One more remark. I noticed you wrote 'some airlines' when talking about airlines that cancelled the A380. You do realise that so far only FexEx has cancelled, not? Please stick to the facts, if you want to be taken serious.

IIRC, the annual Airbus "order intake"/"year in review" dog and pony show is already scheduled to take place in Paris on January 17th, a week from today. The various Excel spreadsheets will be updated on that day.

Allright, thanks for the info. Airbus had the November update there on Dec. 1st. But the one for the whole year probably takes a little longer.
