Heard this mentioned on the radio tonight as I was stuck in traffic on the Northwest Tollway after work.

Lucky the part did not hit someone, recently in the UK (ESSEX) a house was hit by a large chunk of ice that was presumed off of a plane.

They found out the pane that did it. It was a mitsubishi MU2.
Here is a pic of what it looks like it is not the real plane though(Fox used the picture in their story).

Fox News Chicago broke with the owner and their safety record. Looks like someone did not report this to the FAA.

They did identify it in the article:

Quote:
Federal aviation officials have confirmed that the piece of metal that pierced Gohn's shingled roof early Friday was a turbine wheel from the engine of a cargo plane on its way to landing at Midway.

...

The turbine wheel holds the turbine blades in the engine.

First reaction is how the heck does a turbine wheel come off from an engine like that..must have been a massive engine failure.

This must have happened as the plane was flying right over my house. I'm only 3 blocks northeast of the home hit and I'm sure they were using 22L/R at the time. I should check my backyard for fan blades!

A friends house in West Hampstead, North London was recently hit by a heavy ice block as well. Interestingly it hit the toilet extension and went straight through the roof. No injuries but significant damage. Even more interestingly the LHR planes were taking off from 09 (L or R) that evening so it must have been from a departing plane.

How strange.

According to the Tribune article, the thing landed in the lady's bedroom early in the morning.

This quote (also from the Tribune article) is priceless:
"Gohn thought little of it and crawled back into bed."

So a hot and heavy chunk of metal just fell through your roof and burned a hole through your carpet, and she just falls back asleep?
"The Eagle has landed"
