Flashback: United DC-10 At LAS

Tue Jan 23, 2007 12:26 pm

Sorry about the picture not being perfectly upright and vertical. If not for that, this might actually be a candidate for inclusion into the database.

Thanks for looking.

I see the new mgm in background, and looks like New york Ny, I would have assumed at this time most of their 10,s were already in the newer livery. In fact Ua had some in both liverys stored over in a corner.

Nice pic! Around what time is it from? im guessing late 90s?
I wish UA flew mainline to MYR, that way you wouldn't be stuck in a smelly Saturn for 12 hours.

Nice pic! Man do I miss seeing these birds at ORD. Unlike AA, UA operated so many DC-10s out of ORD well into the '90s. It was fun to look down the terminal and see some in the older paint scheme and then others, presumably newer aircraft, in the blue/gray livery. I can't quite make out the reg#. What year was this taken? I'm guessing 80's?

It is indeed a nice pic. The New York New York casino was in construction
in 1997 , So the pic had to have been taken after that

I didn't think UA kept the old scheme on the jets that weren't retired in the early/mid 90s. I thought at some point they were all switched. In any event, if its from the late '90s it makes the pic that much better since it was near the end of the DC-10's days for UA.

Well I tried to edit your photo to straighten it out and center it. I believe it still would need a little more rotation to the left to be accepted (if you want to upload it).

Thank you for the kind words. I don't recall the exact date of this picture. It was *PROBABLY* in 1997, taking into account the construction of the New York New York and the existence of the old colors plane, which was, at the time of the picture, one of the very last ones in those colors. I can't seem to remember seeing any UA planes in that livery past 1998.

And the reg# is N1817U.

I remember riding on these every year to LAS. They were nice and I liked the ride. I remember the last time I went to LAS I saw a lot of these parked at the other side of the airport. This was back in 2001 though.

1995-1997 would be a good guess. I am going to guess that it was around 95-96. It was very rare to see the old paint on the DC-10 in Vegas past that.

Very nice picture by the way. It certainly gave me a smile, and really brought back good memories! I would not be surprised if I actually worked that exact bird on the day you took that pic!  Wink

Great pic!. You should tell us all how you took it. From the plane, ramp, terminal, etc. Very good shot. Sure makes me miss real flying. Now I think all UA out of LAS is Ted 320s.

I took so many pictures during the 90's that most of the memories are kind of blurred. Like I said, I don't even remember exactly what YEAR let alone date it was taken. Only a handful of my photo shoots really stand out in my mind.

From what I can remember, I believe that shot was taken from one of the "A" satellite gates. Takeoffs were running from that runway and not their usual to the west runway. So I was hanging out there watching some action. At the time, I was using a Minolta SLR with up to 200MM zoom and I'm sure I needed that whole focal length to get that shot.

I guess these were the days when you could go into the terminal without a tix. I did the same thing. Even when out of town I'd go an airport to take pics. Even at HNL I would head to the terminal to take pics. Those were the good ole days.

Matt,

What a great Dash 10 photo. Great to see it still in the Saul Bass Colours.
FedEx took over that ship in Early 99 so I am certain it wasn't repainted. The bird was converted to a MD-10-10 in late 03, and redelivered to FedEx in Jan 04.

Also good to see a photo of a UA Dash 10 as that's where the last revenue flight was from LAS to ORD in '01.

Yes, not only because of a/c type but because of the fact that flying these days seems to be more of a chore than a privilege.

It's definatly '97 or later. NYNY opened on Jan 3rd or 4th 1997. I remember it being closed for a few days after New Years Eve, cause I went to the Hacienda implosion. I can't remember when the Monte Carlo was built, but I seem to remember it being at least a little while after NYNY, and it looks pretty complete in that pic. And I can't rememebr when the MGM engrance got redesigned either. I avoid the Strip like the plague.

Huh, for some reason I thought NYNY was first. Regardless, it can't be earlier then mid to late '96, and I'm pretty sure that by 2003 or 2003 the MGM Grand entrance was redone.

Very very nice photo indeed from the color, contrast and of course the DC10 looks awfully good with that background.

It's been discussed til the cows come home on a.net re frequency vs aircraft size and economics etc and hence the "narrowbody-ization" of the N American air routes but despite all that when you see a photo like that you can't help but think what a shame it is from an aviaition enthusiasts point of view that the DC10s and L1011s and 747s and now even the 767s are so much more rare domestically and on intercontinental flights!

Anyway great job on photo could have been a great ad for UA or Vegas or both!

Wow since this topic was such a hit, maybe I'll follow up by posting some UA DC-10's taken at LAX later this evening.

I still have a lot of pictures picked out to share and it's often hard to decide which ones to choose....such as the TWA and Delta L-1011's at LAS...or the 1984 Midwest Express colors DC-9 at LAX....or all of the Western Pacific planes....

well no matter...be patient. In time, I'll post them all.

Anyway, thanks all for the views and kind words.

And BTW:

If any of you think you can pull it off, you have my blessings to clean up the picture, re-angle it, and submit it to the database. Just be sure to give me a credit in the comments line.

When you take into account that in the US during the late '90s DC-10s, L-1011s, MD-11s, 727s, F100s, 742s, and many other classic or out of production aircraft were still in regular service, it really was the ''good ole'' days when you compare it to the monotonous fleets we have now..

The '90s was the best time as an enthusiasts imo, because you had the beginning of the new modern jetliners that rule the skies today but the classic first generation jumbo jets were still around as well.

Now I think all UA out of LAS is Ted 320s.

Yeah, and it's a huge disappointment, IMO. While Ted is supposed to be UA's "vacation destination" sub-fleet, it does little more than take away the excitement of flying somewhere fun. It sucks having to fly Ted when you'd really prefer at least the option of mainline service. From a consumer standpoint, I don't see a point to Ted if they're not really going to give it an identity (i.e.: unique IFE, food, beverages, etc.). As it stands, it's just UA's way of cramming a few more seats on an A320, something that I understand but don't have to like.

Well,at least you can still see Omni DC-10's there!

They're out here at HNL, too. I flinch every time I see one lumber on by!

why wont they scrap planes here anymore?

That'd be a great (and unique) tourist attraction in a city with plenty of unique attractions. Could you imagine an aircraft graveyard just off the strip?!
I'd pry my arss away from the blackjack table to see that.

Back in 92 or so, several early EA Tristars were being parted out there, at leastas far as I could see from my window at the Excalibur.
