VS's A340-300 Usage

Sun Feb 04, 2007 2:40 am

Hi guys,

Just looking at VS's 343 usage this month...I see the following:

VS17/18 LHR-EWR-LHR Daily
VS21/22 LHR-IAD-LHR Daily
VS350/351 LHR-BOM-LHR Daily
VS651/652 LHR-LOS-LHR Daily

So that makes 4 aircraft of the 5 being used if using them to their maximum utilisation, is one in for heavy maintenance or is it on it's way out?

Any info appreciated

Not 100% sure, but VS could be using the 5th 343 as a spare in case any of the others go tech.

Plus after march the 346 on the DEL sector will revert back to the 343--which will contain upper class, so maybe the 340 missing apparently is being converted to contain the Upper Class Suite.

That does make sense, anyone able to confirm one is in having work done on it?

The other is doing LHR-BOS-LHR. It is occasionally an A346 but generally an A343.

A typical routing for a given aircraft might be as follows:

LHR-BOM-LHR-LOS-LHR-EWR-LHR-BOM-LHR etc.

Or

LHR-IAD-LHR-BOS-LHR-IAD-LHR etc.

Just checked Amadeus and its shows the DEL flights being operated by the A346 throughout the summer. The A343 usage for the summer timetable is the following, please correct me if I am wrong:

VS 55 / 56 LHR - IAD - LHR
VS 671 / 672 LHR - NBO - LHR
VS 350 / 351 LHR - BOM - LHR
VS 39 / 40 LHR - ORD - LHR

Which means BOS and LOS will both revert to the A346.

beat me to it! BOS wil be an A346 as of the summer schedule though. anyone know why BOS was changed from a 744 to an A340/346 to begin with? also, i thought they were thinking of getting rid of their A340s?

Virgin Atlantic is slowly phasing out their A340-300 fleet but are expanding their A340-600 fleet. Soon the A340-600 will be the backbone of the airlines fleet.

Definitely not a chance of a 744 order. Like AlitaliaMD11 stated, the A340-600 is developing as the backbone of the VS fleet.

thats really a shame. i have nothing against the A346, but the 744 was really nice for VS. whats the reasoning though?

The A346 is more economically efficient than the 744. If VS wanted another 747 in their fleet, they would place an order for the 747-8I. They have already placed an order for 6 A380's with an option for 6 more.

The 744 will be VS colors for years to come. Just because VS does not plan to order more aircraft does not mean the 744 is going to be phased out soon. VS has one of the youngest 744 fleets. They took deliveries as recent as 2003. Besides, the majority of 747 orders will be 748's from here on out.
There's nothing quite like a trijet.

That's true. Their 744 fleet is exceptionally young, so you will be seeing 744's in VS colors for years to come.  bigthumbsup

Huzzah! I'm getting tired of flying on the 343's with the antiquated IFEs! They may have upgraded upper class, but Prem Econ + econ are still the same. (perhaps with a slightly bigger screen?)

I miss the 744 on that route (LHR-BOS)...

P.S. Does any find the footstool on the VS343 upper class to be protuding slightly into the aisle after door 2L on the way back?

Also, next year when LGW fleet get re-fitted with Wcl and Ycl they are being re-configured with more J seats, more W seats (i think) and less Y seats. Also the long awaited move of new IFE for LGW!!!

It has also been rumered that when VK return there 343's that they will be refitted and return to service with VS. I cant see this happning though.

Yeah, if anything I would've expected VK to take more of the VS 343s. Did they just take G-WWBD because of its immediate availability or for more economic purposes do you think?

BOS will be a B744 for certain periods during summer '07. LAX is also getting periodic B744 service. For some reason they seem to be sharing an aircraft.

The A343 still form a vital part of the fleet as they are well suited to new routes or adding additional services that the A346/B744 can't (at least initially) support. VS have a proven track record of slowly upgrading aircraft size and frequency as a route matures and the A343 still forms a part of that. VS really wish they had some A332/3 for this task but for now the A343 will have to do

Do you have a source/more information on this?. I had not heard that more J/W seats were being fitted (Except on the LHR fleet this autumn).

I just booked a LHR-IAH and back on VS, connecting through BOS, then JFK on the way back. The BOS route will have the A346 as early as March.

The 332/333 would be a good interim solution for VS, however that would contradict Branson's "4 engines 4 long haul" slogan.

I'm happy to see that VS is holding onto the 346. They had some initial teething problems, and although the aircraft is not quite as efficient as the 77W, it is a pleasant aircraft to fly.

Has the entire 744 fleet been equipped with the new Upper Suite and Premier Economy seating?

All B744 (including LGW aircraft) have the UCS. None have the new premium seat. Refitting commences shortly now that all A346 have been completed.

Still 4 more 346's to get refitted before the rest of LHR, then LGW in 2008. The remaing 4 346's have been reconfigured, just not had the Wcl seating installed yet.

Trust me. ALL A346 now have the new premium seat. The reconfig was completed in sept and the fitting of the new seat finshed about a month ago.

I have seen the evidence first hand.

Not sure where you're getting your information from (v:flyer?)but its about 2 months out of date.
