Hello, this past week I was at PHX and saw when landing a 4 engined plane next to the Honeywell building, since we went by pretty fast I could not say if this was a DC-8 or a B707 series aircraft.
What caught my eye was that it had what it looked to be 5th engine mounted on the fuselage, on the left hand side of the plane just behind the front door and at about window level, navigation lights were on and it took off while I was at the terminal waiting for my connecting flight.
Does anyone know if this is actually and engine? or some sort of testing equipment?

It's a B720, and is indeed used for engine testing (the engine does not run for takeoff/landings, presumably) for small engines.

It's a B720 owned by Honeywell, They use it to test small jet engines.

This plane is down at IWA pretty often doing test out on 30R/12L. She sure is loud and smokey! I love the 720.

Nope..The aircraft at Pinal Air Park is a 757, not the 720, which is still at PHX...

Any chance I could get the title of that book? I was wondering how a single engine could effect the flight of an aircraft needing four to fly....

It doesn't effect significantly. But they can test it in air at full air speed - and maintain a stable platform even if it runs crazy, so they really can experiment at limits. This I asssume is the second step after testing at ground - before the engine is supposed to care for itself.

This one is based out of St. Hubert Airport in QC Canada, they test prop engines in the nose (swap) as well as engines as seen on the pic. There are rumors they want to replace it with a 757 as the 707 is getting old structurally.

I've seen that here at IWA once. But not lately... We do get alot of the 707 military tankers doing runs here too.

The engine on the modified 707 is most likely a HTF7000 or, as rumoured, a higher thrust derivative to enter the 10,000 lbs class.

It was here at IWA just last Thursday. It would land to a full stop, taxi back and takeoff. Someone I know down at the airport said it was there Wednesday too, which makes sense since I saw it takeoff from PHX that day.

Back in the day when I was working for Garrett they still had the test bed aircraft for the TPE331, which was a B25 with a turboprop in the nose....
