Mexico USA The Busiest Air System City Pairs

Fri Feb 16, 2007 1:39 am

Mexico and the USA share the second largest international border, one of the strongest world economies; live back to back in a multicultural simbiosis. Americans vacation in Mexico. Mexicans vacation in the USA. Same thing happens to money. And as a result from that, American and Mexican airlines keep the air space crowded all day long.

This is what I came with:

These flights to Acapulco intrigue me.
Only operated by U.S. carriers, not Mexican.
So many flights, to a destination I was led to believe was no longer a vacation destination aimed to U.S. holiday-makers.
Wonder how many of these listed flights operate less than daily?

It's still mainly leisure. Acapulco has seen a healthy boost in tourist traffic in the past five years or so and is becoming popular again, though obviously far from it's heyday in the 1950s and 1960s, when Acapulco was one of the world most famous vacation cities.

Good information, thanx

A couple of additions from last week:

-Now Continental has 31 Mexican destinations from Houston, Loreto (in Baja California) was just added.
-Delta just added Los Mochis from LAX, so DL's Mexican system from LAX is now 14.
-Frontier has also added DFW to Mazatlan

Any know if any Latin carriers have 5th Freedom rights in Mexico for flights to the US?????

I didn't realize the extent of Delta's emulation of the Continental strategy of serving smaller Mexican cities from a gateway near the border! We've made good money on these routes, I'm sure DL does very well, especially out of LAX, which is a stronger O/D market to the NW Mexico and Baja California than IAH. I note service to Zacatecas and Hermosillo, two markets we pulled out of, hopefully DL can make them work out of LAX.

Years ago, some manager told me that, by 2008, we would be operating 40 Mexican routes from the United States. I'm not sure if he meant 40 cities served (still short) or 40 city pairs, which we have exceeded. Most flights are ERJ equipment, but IIRC we recently passed American for highest US-Mexico traffic volume, and certainly made IAH the premier US-Mexico hub by considerable margin. There is still plenty of growth potential to Mexico, and a number of unserved cities I know Continental has studied. You won't see any more explosive growth from us, but 1-2 new destinations a year seems pretty reasonable. Definitely some interesting places to check out.

We do operate a (seasonal?) CLE-CUN flight in addition to daily, year-round service from EWR and IAH.

Add to that the possibility of the Mexican LCCs launching flights to the US. Its going to get interesting

Considering the relative size and population, the UK-Spain market is pretty crowded.

Easyjet alone has nearly 50 routes from 12 Spanish and 11 British airports, Ryanair has over 40 routes. Then there's IB, BA, Clickair, Thomsonfly, Air comet, Monarch, Jet2, Futura, BMI and probably some more.

I don't know about the other airlines listed, but I can say this for Frontier (operated on behalf of Apple Vacations):

  • Denver-Huatulco
  • Chicago/Midway-Cancun

I've also seen AeroMexico at DEN recently, and with some frequency. Usually late at night/early morning, several times a week. One of my gate agent buddies says they've been adding non-scheduled frequencies to DEN from Mexico, but she wasn't sure from where.

When is AeroMexico going to come to SFO?

And does anyone know the schedule of the Azteca flights to OAK? Their website leaves much to be desired. Take a look at their route map's positioning of OAK for example!!!

Very interesting to see how popular Mexico-America flights have become. So many airlines now see the opportunity to start up routes that cater to vacationers and they have really expanded the tourism market between the two countries. Plus, with the new vacation deals that can be booked straight from an airline's website, booking an entire vacation has really become cheaper and easier for a lot of people.

One of the amazing things is that Los Cabos has become one of the top beach resorts preferred by American citizens. There are even more flights coming into Los Cabos from the USA than from all over Mexico. The same situation has been ever since at CUN.

Hello all I just wanted to update that Azteca Airlines no longer flies into Oakland as they withdrew their services; I flew out on their last flight from OAK last August 31, 2006 OAK-TIJ. Our flight was a classic too as there was dense fog in Tijuana and we had a 6hr layover in MXL(Mexicali). It was cool, to fly from OAK-MXL-TIJ. Different than the norm, ZE only had about less than a dozen passengers to Tijuana and only 50 people continuining to GDL from TIJ.

The only Latin American carrier I remember with 5th Freedom rights Mexico-United States was LR on a MEX-LAX flight. Don't know when they stopped it (maybe in the early 90s). One other carrier that had fifth freedom on the same route for a few years was MH although of course is not a Latin Airline.

Did the extinct Ladeco ever had fifth freedom rights between MEX and a city in the U.S. or Canada? I don't know why I get the impression that they did, but probably it is just my imagination.

Sorry about the unrelated question.
