To serve these cities is there any chance any currently served cities will be dropped?

Either SAT, OMA or CMH. I'm guessing these cities because they are the only ones YX mainline flys to that FL doesn't yet.

My guesses: FWA and a city west of the Mississippi.

It's no secret that FWA has been wooing AirTran, and an FL spokesperson confirmed to the local newspapers here that FWA was one of the top 5 scorers in FL's poll that was done a few months ago (ranking up with the real big cities like PHX). Even with Allegiant's recent entry into FWA, FL could still do a real good job... I could see them doing 3x daily to ATL, 1x daily to MCO, and possibly 1x daily to SRQ, all on 717s.

Still, I can't wait for these announcements from FL.

Yx does not fly mainline to CMH. They are downgrading SAT to CRJs from MCI . And OMA has a mix of FRJ and B717.

I can only wish. As a commuter who live in GRR, but works in ATL it is getting old driving to FNT or DTW to hitch a ride to work. I know for a fact that about six months ago the properties & facilities guys from AirTran were in GRR looking at the space that Delta used to occupy. The only issue is that there are no available jetways in GRR, and all of them are generally busy during the day. I really would love to see GRR come to fruition. A couple years back I sat in John Kirby's office and looked at the "AirTran wish list" for cities that they wanted to serve. They were not in any numerical order, but GRR was number 19 on the list.

I second the call for Shreveport. $400 to fly to shreveport from Atlanta hurts. Any sanity in fares would help.

I'm hoping the airport authority in GSO will make up with FL so they will return, at the very least offer a reduction in landing fees so other carriers will reduce fares. Oh well I guess I along with many others will continue the drive to RDU.

Im going with SAT/AUS

though id REALLY love it to be PVD ... poor ATL service and 3 SO FLAmarkets wide open (PBI,FLL,RSW with NK out of the picture)... they could do PVD and BDL to really solidify their position in the northeast.

Potential cities.... AUS, SAT, PVD, BDL, BNA, LIT, XNA, CHS, PWM

PWm makes sense.... because...

1) it leapfrogs WN at MHT
2) they can tie it into BWI also
3) consistent with their B6 catfight strategy

Although...after PWM...PVD is probably the next closest lobster destination  Wink

Here is what I think the criteria would be:

Decent population base
Airport not dominated by a LCC already (STL disproves though)
Ability to stimulate and draw from other communitiesWhen DL upgrades to MD80s FL can still make money

I think that Burlington, VT doesnt meet this criteria

I am biased but GRR would meet this criteria as would AUS and OMA but they have been stimulated by LCC already. I would like to see them add RFD. I know it doesnt do well with mainline (UA is doing well there due to FF base), but LCCs have done well at RFD before. Draw from MSN and even some NW Chicago suburbs along I-90 like Carpentersville and Elgin.

One of the main criteria for air tran is the non-ATL possibilities.

While MHT is much larger..PWM can offer FL so much more than MHT can... PWM can offer, BWI, MCO and TPA, each with no n/s service from PWM, before ATL is even thrown into the picture!, they could practically open PWM without ATL!

PVD could really only offer PBI up until NK's decicion to bail in FLL and RSW which combind offer over 500 pax in the slowest months and over 1,000 in the peak months. so that makes them more attractive now than they were a few months ago. I dont think PVD will be it this time (id love to be proven wrong) but hopefully in the next 12-18 mos.

BDL is the biggest non FL airport in the N.E. but they have delta domination with 6+ mainline to ATL, and service to every major FLA city.

That's quite a few new destinations for a year already with STL, SAN, and PHX already. I can't remember a year when they added 5 in one year before and it's only February. ALB or SYR would be a good call. New York is really becoming a Airtran focus.

I wouldnt put it past FL to hit B6 while they are down, riven their recent cat fight. SYR and ALB would give them every major NY airport minus ISP and JFK....

Several "pairs" of airports are out there (not same catchment area, but simmilar airports/areas...

Trying to remember the list. Some of the cities have come to fruition, others have not. Some of the cities were: SEA, PDX, SAT, LAX, SFO, GRR, AUS, ORD, STL, PVD, DEN, DTW, JFK, PHX, SLC, CUN, ACA, SAN, ONT, YUL, SYR, ALB, IND and YYZ. There are plenty more, but thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

Hopefully one is SYR, so I'll have another alternative to go home from DAB. FL served Syracuse way back when, and I've been expecting them to come back. If they do, I'm looking for BWI, in addition to a few ATL dailies, MCO and FLL- something similar to what they offer in ROC. I know that the city (who runs the airport, most unfortunately) would be pretty pissed if FL came in and offered MCO, a service which they just paid jetBlue an approximately $600,000 subsidy to operate. I'd rather see B6 on the route than FL, though a second daily could easily be supported during the winter months. Here's to hoping that an AirTran 717 will be pulling into SYR soon!

Let's not get too carried away with polls taken on the internet; how many of us think an airline will really base it's expansion plans on a source like that? (Kind of like letting the fans choose the MLB All Stars...) If FL's choice (e.g. PHX back a few months ago) happens to agree with the recent poll, I would expect FL to say something like they did but I wouldn't necessarily believe it.

As for John Kirby's List, I would expect it has changed in a couple of years. I would love to see the latest list but even that would be constantly changing and subject to many, many influences such as availability, new competition, costs, potential routes, etc.

I'll go with SMF and SAT 'cause, well, why not, it's just a guess?... (Ever since they announced SAN as seasonal service only to ATL, I've lost a bit of my excitement and respect for FL's route planners anyway!)

Well, don't lose all of your excitement, because I was pleasantly surprised to find that FL has bumped up its summer schedule to three daily flights out of SAN. They must have gotten a gate in the morning, because the most recently added flight leaves around 8am. No word yet on whether FL will remain "seasonal" at SAN. I find it hard to believe that an airline thinks it can fill 3x 73Gs per day in the summer, and not have enough traffic in the winter.

It would be nice if SLC were "really" on that list, but I highly doubt it. It seams as if FL avoids such markets that are dominated by one carrier as drastically as DL dominates SLC. FL doesn't serve CVG either, and the only reason WN is here is due to their buyout of Morris Air some 12 years ago.

I'd personally like to see BNA and PVD.

BNA-ATL 4x daily, and maybe BNA-MCO, to give the market it's first nonstop service with assigned seating and Business Class.

PVD-ATL 3x daily...also PVD-FLL daily year-round, and seasonal PVD-PBI.

I forgot about BNA. Very good guess. Much like IND was before FL started up there, a Delta monopoly to ATL nonstop. A perfect 717 route to either ATL, Florida, or the Northeast.

Quickermover states...

"That's quite a few new destinations for a year already with STL, SAN, and PHX already. I can't remember a year when they added 5 in one year before and it's only February...."

The company is really growing, however I can remember when I worked for FL, one other year they added a good many cities in one year. The year 2003 was a big year for AirTran. That year they expanded west, adding cities:
DEN, LAS, LAX, SFO, ICT, MCI also in Florida adding PBI in December of that year, I want to say they also added MKE but I cant remember if that city was in 03' or not, Im pretty sure AirTran didnt fly there when I started with the company in March of 02'. On July 1st 2003 Leanoard also announced the big 737 order, a big annoucement, then of course in November of that year, AirTran celebrated its tenth anniversiary where the airline threw a huge party in the then new College park convention center in Atlanta, where we all had an excellent time, provided in part by deep pocket sponsors, Boeing and GCAS....ahhh those were the days.

Possible, but I don't think MCO would be likely.

DL also flies that route with 2x daily E145

I like to believe that route is already served well, but you never know

I'm going for OMA and SYR, although ALB here can use some competition in the ATL route. DL has been taking mainline off of the route for awhile, and right now is putting CR2's on an over 2 hour route. OMA is a possibility because it can create more of a demand in NE, while helping lower prices.

BNA makes some sense to me, if only because it is a good market so close to ATL.

And the FF alliance with Frontier could help beef things up a tad.

But is is only a guess.  Smile

I'm going to say Providence to Atlanta, Orlando, and Ft. Lauderdale; and going way out on a limb to guess Wilmington to Atlanta and Ft. Lauderdale. Willmington has been in talks with airTran to fly to ATL and FLL for a while now.

FL has been around a lot longer than that. Both ancestral airlines (Valujet and Conquest Sun) started up in 1993. Conquest Sun was renamed AirTran in 1994. The merger occurred in 1997, with the merger integrated by September of 1998.
