A380 To Visit LAX On March 19, 2007

Wed Feb 28, 2007 1:40 pm

So I came across the article that says Qantas will fly an A-380 into LAX the same day LH flies their 380 in JFK. Here is the link to the article.

http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/070227/0220938.html

so my question where is the flights to SFO?

anyhow thats good news for LAX, but how about showing her off to the San Francisco Airport, unless SQ will have something for us here.

I wonder what time of day this arrival will be. I hope it's in the morning, I'll fly in from LAS that Monday and catch a flight back before going to work. Thanks QF for the good news.

from what I have seen these maybe just test flights, well at lease the QF flights but in the other threads about the LH flights to JFK and ORD people were saying those were going to have passengers on them. Not sure if that is true or not but its still nice to have two "test" flights on opposite sides of the US on the same day. It would be amazing if they both touched down at the same time at their respective airports.

LAWA tantrum resolved.

Nice publicity save by Airbus. 1 + 1 = >2

By having multiple US events, national media will jump all over this moreso than just one. Now if they are just smart enough to invite Hollywood aviation fans. No doubt politicians will be all over this (Antonio and possibly Arnold), but you got to think that Travolta, et al., being interviewed after a joy ride will get some attention...at least from Access Hollywood and crap like that.

I guess the question on my mind is, "Which airport will it land in first?" I mean, sure it's the same day but I guess it'd matter a lot to LAX if QF lands the A380 first before LH does at JFK.

The Press release explains that 2 separate a380s will simultaneously land at both LAX and JFK.

As it is Qantas route proving, I wonder if it will arrive from Australia.

I'm just asking because wasn't it LAX that was complaining not too long ago about having the honor of having the first A380 land and that Airbus had changed their minds? (Or am I thinking of something else? Don't remember...) Just seems interesting that it's gonna have to share the spotlight instead of just having all the glory for the taking.

EbbUK you say please the Americans?
That dispels another a.net myth, I thought the European general consensus was that Americans were
anti-airbus in spite of all those busses flying around.

Go figure????

And here we were thinking Airbus had no political savvy, as mentioned, great PR save. I trust those flamers in the previous thread who said there was nothing that airbus could do since this was a LH flight learn something from this, as in there is always a way when creative minds get put together to create rather than to tear down. Even if no US carrier orders a A380, having this publicity now during testing and proving is a win win situations, the future is never written in stone, hence the words even if.

Good job by all, now lets see all the LAX spotters cleaning off their lenses, imagine the possibilities.

excellent point. European engineering excellence and the publicity genius of the Americans, add a dash of Australian savvy, and we have the makings of a very spectacular event.

I think Americans are more pro boeing than they are anti-airbus. A.net American members seem to be, in my opinion, very pro boeing but who cares. The 380 is a great engineering feat...it should be celebrated by all.

Yes the LA lot were very upset but this is why I think Airbus has come up with this dual landing idea to please both.

Exactly , if you dont like the A380 then dont fly on it !!!! But there will be hundreds of thousands who do want to fly on it so it doesnt matter what most A netters think in the end .

At least, case LH arrives first due to the winds, it will not be allowed some extra rounds above NYC I'm afraid. A simultanious landing would be great.

I can imagine the dual split screen on CNN, with stop clocks to capture the exact time we see tyre smoke, the endless commentary about the a/c, and as usual, the basher's and supporter experts who will be lining up for on air interviews, the FAA experts on travel patterns, the stock brokers from Wall Street with implications for air travel, and in NY, the yada yada yada, to take nothing away from the Hollywood types coming out of the woodworks.

Setting my recorder now.

Question about LAX -

Will the new 25R be completed by then? Because I thought that was going to be the only rwy that would be able to handle the A380 (200 ft wide)...

They are not rebuilding the runway (25L) to be wider (as far as I know). They were just moving it 55 feet to the South. I believe all four runways at LAX are wide enough to handle the A380 (although the 24s may not be long enough).

The A380 could land on 25R today, from what I've read.

I'm pretty sure it will come in on the Southern runways (the 25s). In'N'Out is great for spotting on the 24s, but you won't see the A380 if it comes in on the 25s from there. Given that the A380 capable gate is on the South Side (and most likely where it will be parked), I'd say Imperial Hill is better than In'N'Out (but then again, I don't know the particular details.)

Of course, I will still swing by In'N'Out for a burger....

Yes, All runways at LAX are A380 capable. The A380 needs less length than the 747, so length is not a problem. Gates are not a problem as gate 101 at TBIT is A380 ready. At this point, there are only a few taxiways the A380 can not use, but that problem will be fixed later this year.

Sad thing is: the A380 will likely land on 25L, so people from the In n' Out park can not view it.  Sad  Sad  Sad  Sad

Right now 25L, is slated to open midnight March 25, but they might try and get it open by the 19th.
What is it? It's A 747-400, but that's not important right now.

Yes the LA lot were very upset

Airbus promised the "LA lot" that it would come to LAX first if they made A380 preparations before they were needed. Remember, part of the marketing of the A380 is that airports are ready and will be ready, and Airbus couldn't afford LAX, one of the prime destinations, to take a "wait and see" attitude. The promise was an incentive.

Then Airbus basically renegged on the incentive, and not only LAX, but it seems QF was promised otherwise.

All this is doing is fulfilling the promise.

Quoting Par13del (Reply 23):

ROFL. You honestly think that will happen? I would imagine just a local news story here in LA, one in NY, and maybe a really, really short blip on the national news feeds. And if Travolta is there, the gossip shows will cover it, too. Then it REALLY happened...  Wink

Quoting Travelin man (Reply 29):

I would bet it comes on the northern most runway. That is where the majority of 747s land, though obviously the 25s do so their share, especially cargo.

WHOOPS...I had meant to write 25L - and simply got flipped backwards...however, I do know that 25R is the 200ft wide rwy...from what I read, the A380 was starting on 200 ft.wide rwys before 150 ft. ones...

I could be wrong, though...

Four things:

1. this piece of news is proof that aircraft manufacturers care about what is said on airliners.net . Thank goodness that there's finally a manufacturer that cares about its REAL clients.
 Big grin

2. since SFO also wants one to land there, why doesn't SQ also fly in simultanously?
 Big grin

3. They could split the screen in 3, a bit like they did in the intro to the 80s series Dallas, with all three A380s landing at precisely the same moment. With today's technology it's really easy to do.
 Big grin

4. I am writing this since I know Airbus reads this and I am sure they will do their best to accomodate our wishes.

Picky picky. Shifting a 150' wide runway 55' south would involve displacing roughly a third of the concrete if you want to split hairs.

Yeah, but for the American press, if it didn't happen in America, it didn't happen.

Rarely have more accurate words been written. Following the logic of Mayor Villagairosa from the article: "Being part of the A380's inaugural visit to the U.S. is a clear indication that Los Angeles is a leading international gateway and that our airport is a world-class facility," we can convincingly claim that the A380's inaugural visit to North America is a clear indication that Iqaluit is also a leading international gateway and that the airport is a world-class facility.
The nice thing about a mistake is the pleasure it gives others.

since SFO also wants one to land there, why doesn't SQ also fly in simultanously?

I'm willing to bet a $20 that SQ will fly one to SFO on the same day after these news.

Sad thing is: the A380 will likely land on 25L, so people from the In n' Out park can not view it.

Quoting Travelin man (Reply 28):
I'm pretty sure it will come in on the Southern runways (the 25s). In'N'Out is great for spotting on the 24s, but you won't see the A380 if it comes in on the 25s from there. Given that the A380 capable gate is on the South Side (and most likely where it will be parked), I'd say Imperial Hill is better than In'N'Out (but then again, I don't know the particular details.)

Of course, I will still swing by In'N'Out for a burger....

Quoting Pbottenb (Reply 31):
Hey, if thats is the worst case scenario, then I'll be OK - I can get a burger afterwards.... Im hoping that I can find a way to get up close and take some good pics...if I could get inside it would make my month...

Ok then it's settled. First, we'll have a big A.nutter party on top of Imperial Hill to watch it come in on either 25R or 25L (almost all flights from down under land on the 25's anyway). Then after everyone gets their fill of pics, it's off to In-n-Out for some Double-doubles animal style! Who's in?

Doin' just fine thanks...

Well, they have to trash all the existing concrete anyways because things like the drainage systems and runway lighting have to be repositioned.

Why? what does SQ or SFO have to prove? The only thing that is of concern is if the A380 can fly HKG-SFO & SFO-HKG nonstop with enough payload year round. Now, that is something Airbus can tell Singapore Airlines just based on their flight test data. (they don't have to fly the actual route)

I might just have to take a flight to LAX on that day. Unless.... anyone know when LH is supposed to bring their A380 to ORD?

Should be at ORD about 1:00pm on the 20th for about 2.5 hours.
