Germanwings Choses Dortmund As 5th Base...

Thu Mar 01, 2007 4:36 am

The German Low Cost airline Germanwings wants to challenge Easyjet in Dortmund and has announced it will open it's next base there.
WIth the proximity of Cologne ( and a massive offer ..) a very strange decision - I would have thought Germanwings could rather go to NUE and open those routes that Air Berlin never wanted to serve.

Well Eurowings still has its company HQ at DTM, that's a major reason for this move and maybe they think that they can serve the Central European market better from DTM with the large population of people from Eastern European decent in the region.

Wow, this is nice news! Do you have any URL or other source? The germanwings website doesn't mention anything yet...

Nice to see some growth at DTM. I wonder how easyJet will respond.

this could be a potential expand for domestic traffic out of DTM. IIRC the only schedule domestic flight is to MUC by LH?!?!

Correct. LH is currently only offering 3 daily flights at fairly inconventient times with small equipment to MUC - the service is nowadays only a shadow of the former Eurowings times, when MUC was served about 6 times daily.

I keep my fingers crossed that this rumor will come true. It will be interesting to see, whether 4U is going head to head with U2 or whether they will instead focus on complementary routes.

Looking at their SXF routes, the other base where 4U started after easyJet, they don't compete on any of the routes. I think we will see quite some routes to Turkey, as 4U, as a German carrier can operate them.

Not so strange. CGN and DTM ideally cover most of Northrhine-Westphalia travel distance wise. That is at least 18 million people and easily worthwhile two bases. Not thinking of all the people that come to CGN from other, southern states and from the Netherlands and Belgium

LGW also offers quite some domestic flights ex DTM:

Westerland/Sylt
Berlin
Dresden, Leipzig
Nuernberg
Stuttgart

They fly with DO8 a/c.

You are right, although Walter is playing in a totally different league when it comes to target groups, fares and yields than LH, U2 and 4U.

That's right. For Domestic destinations, let's look at the domestic destinations from CGN: SXF, Dresden, Leipzig/Halle. I think these all 3 are possible options for DTM too, and would put some pressure on LGW anyways.

Nothing is mentioned on the Germanwings website yet, however, on their flight map a nameless dot appeared at the location of DTM. Is this some kind of marketing stunt (in that case, they should have done it before the newspapers wrote about it), or just a sleepy flash-designer...

The following destinations ex DTM were shown on the Germanwings website due to a technical glitch for a short time:

VIE (twice daily)
FAO (1x/week)
IBZ (2x/week)
PMI (4x/week)
SAW (3x/week)

I see it on the website. They say it's bookable and even have links to the booking page - but Dortmund doesn't appear yet in the pulldown menu. Their website crew should be kicked

(There are more notable errors on their website, for example the translations of Berlin and Cologne in Dutch: they have the right translation in the pulldown-menu, but a total bizarre translation on the interactive map that doesn't make any sense - I've mailed them about it already a year ago but nothing has changed)

Edit: flights are bookable. Schedule is just like DABVW suggested:

1
VIE 0640-0955
PMI 1020-1530
VIE 1625-1945

2
VIE 0640-0955
IBZ 1020-1555
VIE 1625-1945

357
VIE 0640-0955
PMI 1020-1530
VIE 1625-1945
SAW 2145-0600

4
VIE 0640-0955
IBZ 1020-1555
VIE 1625-1945

6
VIE 0640-0955
FAO 1030-1710
VIE 1755-2120

I wonder how they'll schedule the crew for the SAW flight. I'm not too much into allowed flight times, does the 2145-0600 (8:15 hours for the rotation, including a 2 hour stop at SAW) allow for one crew, or do they need hotels in Istanbul?

the SAW rotation can easily be done by one crew without the need for a hotel.

It was about time VIE flights returned to DTM! And even twice a day... Awesome. I knew it was going to happen eventually, but I hadn't expected it to be 4U.

I read somewhere Germanwings had wanted to make DTM its primary hub back when it started, but the nighttime restrictions and short runway had prevented that. I think CGN was a good choice due to its huge size, 24-hour operations, location, and under-utilization (especially at the time).

But DTM definitely has the ability to succeed for 4U, especially if the expansion plans go through there, which include a significantly longer runway, slightly longer operating hours, and an eventual better connection to public transportation.

I think LH should have one of its affiliates fly DTM-FRA. It's about the same distance as DUS-FRA, and significantly longer than CGN-FRA, both of which are offered. It would definitely help DTM get some serious connections, rather than just point-to-point holiday travel.

Yesterday I saw that there is already a big Germanwings poster ad at the Esso gas station next to the airport. I am curious if there will be an ad war between Germanwings and EasyJet in Dortmund.

I doubt it for now. At the moment, they are hardly competing on any route ex DTM (only PMI is served by both of them).

Highly likely: the airlines both get money from the airport to do advertisement, under the NERES (New and Existing Route Expansion Schema) program. Airlines can receive up to 1 euro per departing passenger to use for advertisement. With the capacity they offer, Germanwings just qualifies for 50 cents of support (assuming they use the 156-seat A319s). easyJet, by offering way more flights, gets 1 euro per pax.

But I am very curious if Germanwings will place ads in the stadium (or even becomes a sponsor of the BVB). I heard rumors a few years ago that the Westfalenstadion should get the name "Germanwings Arena" but it never came so far, the insurance company Signal-Iduna apparently offered more money to get the rights for the stadium name. Maybe 4U will rethink of a BVB sponsoring now, they could reach approximately 80.000 people in the stadium every second week and millions more on the TV screens.

EasyJet is already a main sponsor, the whole southwestern corner of the stadium has orange perimeter advertising and when there is a standard situation (free-kick, corner ball) they measure the speed of the ball, then the result gets displayed - presented by EasyJet - on the two giant score boards. I simply love it during a night game, the whole stadium is illuminated in orange for approx. 15 seconds, looks very cool.

Furthermore wanted the BVB a logo-jet but EasyJet declined... maybe they get one from Germanwings if they become a sponsor? Would be cool!
