PS - I'd love to be proven wrong. Well, not love, because viewing and parking will suck, but it would be nice to think there are that many enthusiasts here in LA.

But since we can't keep a football (American) team because of low interest and lack of desire to get up early enough to watch the early games, I'm not encouraged that the A380 will draw 2x a football crowd...

I plan on being there! I live north of Fresno, but my wife's best friend lives in Los Angeles so it's a perfectly good excuse to come down for the weekend. Plus my 15-month old son will get to see it (hopefully he doesn't get distracted by a barking dog or something).

Any idea how long the A380 will be on the ground for?

I'll be skipping class to see it for sure! I'm not sure where to go to see it, In'N'Out or Imperial Hill, both will be zoos for sure, but I know I'm not going to miss this. I've never seen an A380 in real life, so I will definitely be there.

Hmm i was think that since we have soooo many people coming and more to come that we should have some kinda meeting, we should have like one of those tent station things and have like a sign in thing with name tags or something HAHA, and then finish it off with an A.net BBQ lol now thats a spotting trip to celebrate the hobby and the A380.

Seriously, LA has one of the worst records for overinflating the size of crowds. People who are actually at events come home and laugh when they read the inflated numbers in the newspapers for things like parades, protests, etc.

I expect a few thousand. Maybe.

Only way they'll get 100k is if Anna Nicole Smith's body was being transported.  Wink

From the CTA (Central Terminal Area), south on Sepulveda (Hwy 1), right on Imperial Highway, left on Main Street, left on Imperial Avenue. Imperial Avenue ascends to the crest overlooking the airfield.

I live near LAX so I will be there. I also have business relations inside some of the terminals that allow me access. Can anyone tell me if Qantas will use their gates at T-4 or has a special gate for A-380's been set up at TB International Terminal. If it's T-4, I'm in.

My first post! Wow, doesn't get more exciting than this (yeah, you're all thrilled I'm sure). Despite my desire for faster planes rather than bigger ones, ya'll have got me fired up for this potential Airplane Woodstock event. I think I'll buzz down on the 18th from BFL via the corridor and touch down at Hawthorne, walk a few steps and catch the Green Line and cruise on over to "the zone." A few questions for you LAX professional spotters, if you don't mind. What are the hot spots at LAX for viewing? I'm thinking I want to be somewhere on Aviation Blvd., perhaps between 25L & 25R. How about hotel parking lots? Are there any elevated hotel lots where the security won't boot you for hanging out? By the way, I love PBottenb's idea: "Lets all wear tin foil hats and pocket protecters stuffed with pencils." Hilarious.
Bigger planes & bigger windows? Thanks, but I'd rather you fly me faster!

I think personally, all A.netters should meet at one place (the Proud Bird restaurant for example) an hour or two ahead of the A380's arrival, so we can all socialize for a bit, and then each person or group can go to their preferred spotting/photography location...

Just an idea.

Just bear in mind that parking lot will be open, the restaurant closed. However, this sounds like a very good idea! Central location - those flying in just need to take the Parking Lot "B" bus to get to the restaurant.

As a local, and assuming I do do this meet, I'd be willing to provide transportation to some of the conventioneers.

Well thats the best idea and probably the best way of conducting the meet. so lets say that we pull 50 spotters (we will probably have like 70ish but just an idea) so about the transportation, if there is 50people and about each car can hold 4-5 people that means we need 10-15 cars now that may not be a problem but the problem is due to the number of people that are going to be there to watching the LA traffic control is going to be forced to shut down some streets and one including the street that has the hill on it. so if were going to try and find 15 places to park and the streets are going to be crowded then we gotta play this smart and use our Airport Knowledge to our advantage Big grin

The key to organizing a group of A.netters for this event is confirming arrival time/runway, gate, departure time/runway. If all this occurs on the south runways and the south end of TBIT, then Proud Bird and Imperial Hill will be the two key points to spot or photograph. I would guess Proud Bird parking lot for arrival and Imperial Hill for departure. The Proud Bird is available for groups and perhaps a brunch can be organized for A.netters with access to the area in front of the restaurant facing the runway. With 50-70 people at say $20 a head that's $1000-$1400 to the Proud Bird Restaurant to cover the brunch. A car pool could then be set up for the departure later in the day to transport everyone to Imperial Hill.

Excellent Idea, Lets say everyone does by some food there, then there is now way that they could not allocate some space for us spotters. Carpooling to Imperial hill is another great idea, keep them coming.

If they can't set up a brunch buffet, they can do a lunch buffet starting at 11 AM. With this we could have access to the grounds and parking to watch the landing from 8 AM on. If we could get a confirmed arrival and departure time for the A380, it would be easy for us to plan the event. Although for enough people and a special event, they might set up the earlier brunch.

what kind of event are they planning? the only planning is amongst the anetters. Now the only planning they should be doing is trying to allocate some space near the ramp for anetters to take some closeup pics of that ugly giant. I would be thrilled to stand next to it and be awed by its size and power. Hope theyre planning something along the lines of my dreams.

Probably just your normal politcal speeches and such. Perhaps a ribbon cutting and a tour of the aircraft for some bigwigs.

On the subject of brunch at the Proud Bird, as good as it sounds, I see one potential problem. With special events a location ususally will require the money upfront, and since the 19th is just a couple of weeks away, getting the money required from everyone might be a problem since we don't have a confirmed number of attendees and we're all spread out. And unfortunately, I'm not sure if any one person is willing to pay upfront and hope that he/she will get their money back and in the interest of fairness I wouldn't want that at all because. I think meeting at the Proud Bird is a great idea. But everyone will have different schedules before and after the arrival of the A380 and maybe its just best if we make it a BYO(insert fav. food or beverage here). Just my two cents. Let me know what you guys out there think.

Anyone have any departure info for the A380? Will it be departing LAX on the 19th as well? If so, any idea on a time? Thanks.

Let's just say that the lighting will not be favorable--in the least.
