Economy Class On 747 Upper Deck

Fri Mar 02, 2007 3:44 am

A few airlines have had some aircraft configured with Economy Class on the upper deck of B747s. The airlines I can remember are....

British Airways
South African Airlines
Swiss Air

My questions are:

* Were there any other carriers I missed?
* Are there any carriers currently who offer Economy Class on upper deck
* Air NZ actually have two classes on the upper deck of their B744s (Premium Economy and Business Premier) - are there any airlines who have or have had two classes in that small area?

Swiss Air

Swissair had business class on the upperdeck of all of its 5 B743s, and a bar on its B741s. Right now, Air France has economy on the upperdeck of all but two of its mainline B744s.

Many years ago, EL AL had half of the upper deck of their 744s configured for business class and the other half for economy. That has not been the case for a long time though. It is now exclusively business class.

Some one correct me if wrong, but I thought that BA had World Traveler Plus in the upper deck, not regular World Traveler. I know that VS has their Premium Economy product in the upper deck.

Virgin Atlantic have some 744s with business class (Upper Class) in the forward half of the upper deck (in addition to seats on the main deck) and Premium Economy in the rear half. of the upper deck. Other VS 744s have only Premium Economy in the upper deck.

When TWA had 747SPs, they configured the upper deck as all economy.

Source: Boeing 747SP (Great Airliners Series, Vol. 3), ed. Brian Baum, Motorbooks Intl. (1997)

This wonderful book is full of lovely colour photos of every 747SP ever built, including the (vintage) interior photos from every period of use (from the Pan Am, Braniff, TWA, and other airline 747SPs to the private/government 747SPs of the Middle East).

This was the case at the end of their career with Swissair, but there were 69 economy class seats on the Swissair B743's upper deck when they were delivered.

The three Combi Versions had a unique layout on the main deck, because business class was in the rear of the cabin between doors 3 and 4, in front of the freight compartment and after the economy class on the main deck.

I remember years ago flying United to SYD. The 747 had economy on the upper deck. The upper deck was full and people were so uncomfortable. Everyone was standing in the isle. I think the flight attendant had reprimanded them for traipsing up and down the stairs and getting in everyone's way on the main floor. I took a peek upstairs and got yelled at too. I felt bad for those folks!

I am sure its a much better ride with business class on the upper deck

AF does have economy on the upper floor

BA did have Y seating on some of the original 747-400. Club World was in B & C zones. It was a pain as this was back in the days of smoking on flights. So what you got was Y pax sitting upstairs and then wanting to go to the rear of the aircraft to find a seat to smoke. Of course the Club World service took longer so you had Y pax pushing their way past trollies etc to get to the back in E zone to smoke. This caused many problems and in the end C zone became World Traveller and Upper Deck became Club World. Those were 'fun days' ........................NOT!!

I don't think UA ever has had economy class on the upper deck on its 747s. UA has flown the 744 to SYD for at least the
last 15 years and the 744s has always had C class on the upper deck.

Scandinavian Airlines (SK) had economy class on their 747s, at least towards the end of their service. I flew in economy
class on a SK 742 ARN-JFK on 3Jul86 on the upper deck. Very Cool!

Corsair had mixed "business" (2-3) and economy (3-3) seating on the upper deck of the 747-300. Don't know about the 400 though.

I actually don't understand why airlines put Business or even First (LH) class in the upper deck. From my experience it is much noisier than other parts of the aircraft.

Yes, the BA 747 classics had Y on the upper deck. I flew on a 742 in this config. just before they were taken out of service. There was almost no one else up there and the F/A plied my friend and I with liquor. Great flight, though I didn't feel too great after.....

Have also flown the JL 744 with this config. (I believe it's a smaller proportion of JL's intl. 744s that have Y in the upper deck) and enjoyed it very much despite relatively uncomfortable seats.

On both flights I found the service was a lot better due to it feeling more like a small jet, thus more attention given to each passenger.

I've got a question regarding the AF upper deck Y-class. Are there any special requirements when trying to get a seat there? The last time I tried to get on the upper deck of a BA 747-200, they told me I couldn't because they did not see my carry-on luggage (I was checking in early).

Air Canada for a time had Economy on its 747 upper deck:

-100/-200s were 2-3
-400s were 3-3

This was after 1st class was combined with Business into Executive First, the business class sections upstairs were done away with.

The -400s were later converted back to 2-2 J class upstairs but the 2nd section downstairs became Y.

I don't think the short tops ever got the J class back upstairs.

CP Air's four 747-200's originally had first class lounges in the upper deck, as did most early 747s. The lounges were removed after the first few years of service and replaced with Y class seats.

When the original non-sleeper seats in F class were replaced with sleeper seats sometime later, F class was moved to the upper deck (12 seats) and an upgraded business class was introduced which occuped the A zone (the nose, where F class was originally) and B zone with a total of 50 seats. The new J seats were the original F class non-sleeper seats but more of them with inclusion of the B zone as part of J (F class originally 28 seats) so it was one of the best of the early business products (called Royal Canadian Class).

First class was later dropped but forget whether that was before or after CP Air disposed of the 742s and standardized on DC-10-30s for longhaul routes for a few years (before 763s and 744s arrived after CP Air became Canadian Airlines.) The four CP Air 742s went to PIA an exchange for four of PK's DC-10-30s to increase the DC-10 fleet.

I flew Ansett Australia many times between SYD and HKG and BOTH aircraft - B743s and B744s...both of them had Y class in the upper deck at that time. In B743s, Y class seat pitch was wider than B744's. However, B743s didnt have PTVs in Y...only B744 had them. It was my best experience in the air.

Yes, the BA 747 classics had Y on the upper deck. I flew on a 742 in this config. just before they were taken out of service. There was almost no one else up there and the F/A plied my friend and I with liquor. Great flight, though I didn't feel too great after.....

Before the advent of cradle seats and the like BA used to have convertible seats on the upper deck. They could swap between being Club (or was it Super Club? Elizabethan?) and economy.

I was on BA 747-300 in 1999 YVR-LHR in upper deck economy seating. It was at the rear of the upper deck. Our experience was great. Seating was 3-3 and although I don't remember how many rows, it was not many. We had a bathroom for very small cabin compared to the lower deck and a dedicated flight attendant so the service was awesome! He was serving 30 people or so rather than then 200 below us!
