LTU About To Sign For 4 A340s

Sat Mar 03, 2007 4:02 am

According to LTU's CEO Jürgen Marbach, his company is about to place an order for 4 A340 long haul planes with Airbus, since they are the best suited planes to expand their long haul operations.

http://www.focus.de/finanzen/news/luftverkehr_nid_45584.html

No subtype is mentioned in the article, and my best guess is they will go for the A340-300.

LTU would be a new customer for the A340, since so far they only operate the A330...

A new A340 customer! That is certainly significant. When LX ordered the type (A343) a few years ago, people thought that would be the last, but MK had a follow up order and then AY ordered a few, but LTU is certainly a welcome addition to the 340 family.

Pity it won't be wearing the current LTU livery, but the new one; the new one's OK, but the old one is classy and suits an aircraft as classy as the 343.

Fingers crossed.  Smile

I just wonder which routes they intend to fly with A340 ..
Maybe we can expect some more routes to Asia ???
I think this move is already ovedue for some time since the MD-11 left the fleet !

Looks like both Boeing's and Airbus' "old dogs" still have some fight left in them.

Yup. Something about those two extra engines does wonders for taking a plane I find ungainly - the A330 - and making it look good.

That would be great, however rumours still insist that Mr Marbach is going to sell his stake in LTU very soon, so why would he be talking about new aircraft now ? One of the routes previously talked about for an A340 was Nurnberg to Bangkok feeding from Air Berlin, but that seemed to die a death after LTU looked away from the A340s it planned to lease this year.

Sorry to disappoint you the new livery will be introduced with the delivery of their twelfth A330 on May 1st:

From the LTU webpage:

" Ab Mai 2007 geht LTU nicht nur mit ihrem fabrikneuen und zwölften Langstreckenjet an den Start. Dieses neue Flugzeug vom Typ Airbus A330-200 kommt auch in einem veränderten Design daher und läutet eine neue Ära bei Deutschlands sicherster Airline ein."

Another interesting aspect in that article is the idea of merging Condor and LTU.
How would a fleet of a merged LT/DE look like. I guess the 767 will be on their way out, maybe they would keep their 757-300s if they can not sell them to ATA, CO or NW.
So that would leave a fleet of A320/A321, A330, maybe 753s and A340s.

If they will be A-340-300s I think they can better pick up some 2nd hand airplanes. Apart from Air Canada, also Air France, Cathay Pacific and Virgin will slowly sell off their older A-340-300s in the next few years.
If they will be A-340-600s, I think they will be new, an offer they couldn't refuse because Airbus didn't place all the cancelled Emirates -600s yet. Even while final production is still a few months away, A-340-600 specific parts have already been produced so Airbus can't easily make A-330s of them instead.

Used A340's make good sense for charter operators. It's still a fairly economic aircraft on long-haul trips and charter carriers don't usually carry cargo, making it possible to operate the aircraft in "sardine can" configuration.

Well, LTU isn't your "typical" charter carrier. Their aircraft are not exactly sardine can (yes, I know it's close), in Y they have 8-abreast on the A330/340. And their subsidiary Leisurecargo markets the cargo space not only on their own aircraft, but only on those of other airlines. So they actually carry quite a bit of cargo. (see www.leisurecargo.com)

I think if they'd merge, the 753 would be kept, as it is a different class of aircraft than the others. And IMO they'd also keep the 763, simply because they need the lift. BTW, the 763 will get new interiors soon.

Usually, IMO, the term "order" does neither refer to used nor to leased aircraft.

As I said, it depends whether the journalist got that part right. Used aircraft are certainly not out of the question.

AND: operating the 340 is a very interesting alternative transporting US-troops into the gulf region, so are ATA, WA and all the other contractors on the jump ??? (btw: its not about the range, allmost all military flights into the Gulf region have to refuel enroute, regardless if it´s a DC10,MD11, 767,L10)

Well, they used to be. If you ever flew one of their MD-11s, you'd know what it is being in a sardine can and what seemed to be a 28" seat pitch. I dread the thought of ever flying on an aircraft with 10 abreast in an all-Y-Class 3-4-3 configuration. At least that wasn't a big problem with their 767s, where I believe they used to have either a 2-4-2 or a 2-5-2 configuration in the early 90's.

EDIT: Math error, as 3-4-3 is 10 and not 9.

I got a timetable from the 95-96 winter season. If I get around to it, I'll check up there, but I do know it was 2-x-2 (replace the X with the correct number for LT). Though looking back, 2-5-2 on a 767 does sound cramped.

If you check for example the Finnair-webpage about the A340 characteristics, you'll find 3000 meters requirement (fully loaded..)
While the MTOW requirement for a A330-200 is about 2,500 meters...

A330 in 3-4-3? I have heard of 3-3-3 and 2-5-2, but 3-4-3 - is that actually feasible? I mean the traditional 2-4-2 feels cramped already.

As to the 767s, I believe that LTU always flew them 2-3-2. Airlines like Thomas Cook UK and Britannia however flew them in 2-4-2.

Alos, the 777 is these days operated as 3-4-3 by some (sucky) carriers, as opposed to the regular 3-3-3 or 2-5-2 layout. Of course LTU never had 777s - although IMHO they should.

A330 in 3-4-3? I have heard of 3-3-3 and 2-5-2, but 3-4-3 - is that actually feasible?

My mistake, I meant 3-3-3 it's getting late ....  Wink

Quoting 764 (Reply 43):
As to the 767s, I believe that LTU always flew them 2-3-2.

I've never travelled on one of LT's 767's, but as in the posts above, I also had the timetable with the seat plan's in the back showing the 767 with 2-4-2 seating.

According to a German newspaper LTU will get 4 A340 from Air Canada for very long longhaul routes.

So not new ones? Which paper was that, btw?

A340 was Nurnberg to Bangkok

Hmmm. A340 direct to Bangkok from Nurnberg... isn't the runway under 9,000 feet long? If it is, how on earth could it depart from there without being seriously weight-restricted??
Last flights: LH 3738 MUC - ZRH , LH 3749 ZRH - MUC . Upcoming: EK 50 MUC - DXB 3-aug. and EK 322 DXB - ICN 7- Aug.
