Egyptair Pilot Avoids Collision At Johannesburg

Sat Mar 03, 2007 6:16 am

Egypt's Al-Ahli soccer team on Thursday survived a big scare while the plane they were aboard narrowly missed a deadly collision with another plane at Johannesburg international airport in the South African city, the Club's official website reported.

The incident occurred when the pilot of the EgyptAir plane carrying Al-Ahli soccer team approached the airport to land but found another jet several meters away was using the same runway for takeoff, the report said.

The pilot had to abort the landing and circle around until he got confirmation from an air traffic controller to land again after the runway was cleared, it added.

Fortunately, no one was hurt and Al-Ahli's contingent, comprising 18 players and led by board member of Al Ahly team Mohamed Abdel-Wahab, resumed their trip to Zimbabwe to play a match with Zimbabwe's Highlanders Club in the Confederation of African Football champions league round of 32, due to take place on Sunday.

The A/C in question is an A330 ( flight MS839 ) , and the incident happened in the early morning on thursday . The pilot got clearance from ATC to land on Runway (3R) , then upon landing , he saw another plane using the same runway which led him to abort landing and go around .

Very true! What was the other A/C and why was it (still) on the authorized MS runway...

I love how people on this board bitch and moan about PTVs and crap, and yet something so huge and nearly disasterous along with amazing piloting skills goes completely unnoticed.

Good going for the pilot, and I'm glad everyone is safe!

the airport to land but found another jet several meters away was using the same runway for takeoff, the report said.

He found the jet on the runway several meters away?? I believe you would be able to pick up an aircraft using the runway from kilometers away... Anyway it sounds like an ATC error and the Tower (if the situation is handled correctly) should have asked the A330 to break off the approach. Maybe they did and this crucial part was left out by the media to sensationalise the story?

JNB is not that crowded of an airport so I hope the mistake was picked up early into the aircraft's approach, and not when they were "meters" apart!

I am eager to hear the other side of the story ( from ATC ) , i have been trying to find anything in the South African news but there is no mention at all of this incident .
I would appreciate if any update from a South African member of A.Net .

Thankfully we didn't get a repeat of the Munich air disaster. Certainly a testament to the skills of the flight crew.
