FedEx At LAX.

Thu Mar 08, 2007 1:05 am

FedEx has a large operation at LAX. Does it rival the UPS operation at ONT? Does FedEx use aircraft between LAX and other nearby airports like SNA, BUR, LGB, as I imagine UPS does from ONT? My question is related to whether ground transportation would be more effective and/or more efficient over those short distances from LAX compared to air transportation?

Thanks, Bruce.

LAX ops are pretty good. Most flights are to DFW, AFW, MEM, OAK, HNL and EWR, but you do see the random flights to PHX and others. I'm not real familiar with UPS ONT ops.

If a package is going from LA to say SAN it won't make it on a plane. It will be trucked down to it's destination. SoCal pckgs that are staying in SoCal will never see the plane. Socal going to NoCal. will be on a plane.

The difference between Fedex LAX and UPS Ontario is that LAX is mostly a origin/destination location for Fedex, while Ontario still serving the LA basin is more a sorting hub for UPS.

As far Fedex short haul flying, until only recently with the spike in fuel prices they used to operate near daily A310/A300 flights between LAX and both BUR and SNA. Flying was an easier and quicker method of moving large volume of cargo instead of dozens of trucks sitting on LA freeways. Most recently however such flying has been more adhoc nature, with the last one having operated on Monday to BUR.

Also dont forget LAX is a big maintenance base for Fedex with lots of DC-10 and MD-11 working taking place in the hangar acquired from Flying Tigers.

Where did you find this out? I'm not entirely sure how accurate that is.

Often times it's just position flight.

During the late 90s they started those really short intra LA hops. They died after 9/11 to come back briefly to only get mostly discontinued again. If I recall correctly it was either the State of CA, or other governmental agency that FX entered into some deal to help reduce pollution and vehicular traffic during the 90s that was partial impetus for the flights.

As I said, the flights are not on the books any longer. For instance here is the LAX departure activity for the next two days.

Thanks to everyone, some great info. Can anyone post some comparible info as laxintl and AA61 did, for ONT (UPS)? I'm not sure where this data is sourced from.

Thanks, Bruce.

Our LAX (almost hub) will see anywhere from 18-25 daily mainline flights. As stated above it's a mantinence facility for MD a/c. When FX takes delivery of the 77F look for increased traffic for MD flights into LAX. LAX is the 7th busiest cargo airport in the world.

I'm not familiar with 5X at ONT either. Sorry.

Are you including the feeder flights? ATR 42s, 72s, 208As, 208Bs, and F27s?

The Fedex feeders for SBP SMX SBA BFL IYK BIH operate out of ONT. We moved the IPL feeders over the SAN due to lack of capacity on 1215 ONT MEM and a lack of ramp space
