Regional Better Than Mainline?

Thu Mar 08, 2007 6:32 am

With the decline in passenger service among mainline carriers since 9/11, there seems to be little difference between service on mainline carriers versus their regional partners on domestic flights. It seems to be entirely possible that better service may actually be found on the regional partner. So, here are my questions I'm hoping to get some opinions on.

Are there any regional airlines with consistently better service than their mainline partner, and why is it better?

If so, would you go out of your way to book your flights on the regional, even though the cabin is more cramped, and your gigantic rolling carry on will have to be gate checked?
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

I would say from what i have experienced... Pinnacle is about 100 times better than Northwest Airlines. Mesaba however, not so much.

just my opinion.

Horizon is great. But, then Alaska isn't bad either. The free microbrews on QX are a nice treat at the end of a long day as I settle back for a couple hour flight. And, Horizon, I thought, was a good partner for F9. It will be interesting to see how Republic matches up to what Horizon had provided.

Skywest seems to be challenged with their rapid growth. For a time, I thought Skywest beat UA on most intra-state flying. But, they're not what they once were, some of the RJ's are pretty beat up, and the EMB 120's - well - some need a make-over... In cabin service? Sometimes, more than not, it's "what service"?

In the UK, bmi regional offers a better product than mainline bmi.

ExpressJet is just as good as mainline CO in Coach.
With a good F/A, could be better, if you're in seat 12A.

I was just thinking that when I saw this thread. I think Skywest's people are so much more fun and friendly than their mainline partners. They seem like a little hometown airline, while DL and UA's people are mostly very business-like (not a bad thing, either).

Skywest made it ahead of UA and DL mainline as America's most admired companies. Came it at #6.  Smile

Republic service wasn't bad. Except for US Airways' "express" service, there is no alcohol... unlike...this...

Do not bring stranger girt into your room. The stranger girt is dangerous, it will hurt your life.

In the UK I'll give an example.

BMI mainline has only just started introducing a non buy on board service to FF passengers. The rest of the passengers have to buy their own food and drink.

BMI regional however offer a full, on board service to its passengers regardless of fare type and status.

This is a rare example in the UK though as you might have read the BA regional (BA Connect) is been brought by another airline and BA made its regional company a buy on board product.
