JAL To Edinburgh?

Fri Mar 09, 2007 7:34 pm

Reported elsewhere: Japan Airlines To Edinburgh that JAL would like to operate a once weekly flight to Edinburgh in the summer, but cant due to facility restrictions.

Anyone any thoughts on this? Given the number of Japanese tourists in Edinburgh in the summer, I can see this route being a success!

AFAIK EDI is not suited to handle big aircraft. It's a pity as I would love to see some long-haul flight operating to EDI.

Delta operate a daily B763 to EDI. A B772 isn't that much bigger capacity wise is it?

Why don't they just fly into GLA then? If you're coming from the other side of the world, who cares about a few hours on a train of in a bus from the airport?

Neither GLA or EDI airports have a rail link ... yet

It's not a capacity thing. It's a footprint thing. A 777 is much bigger.

Besides the footprint, the amount of fuel the JL 777 is much bigger than a DL flight to the USA.
I would think that a 767 or 777 will be restricted at EDI

GLA would be fine if the flight was a charter sold as a package to Edinburgh. But if it was a scheduled flight the problem would be making sure the Japanese realised Glasgow is close to Edinburgh. Maybe JAL could sell Glasgow as Edinburgh West  Wink

I'd love to see this flight happen, with JL joining oneworld. But I have to think that with JL only offering up the chance for weekly service, it won't happen.

Could one of their 767's be capable of the route then? It must only be about 10 hours say? NZ operated 11 hour 50 minute AKL-HKG flight with their 763's!

Would JL ever go to DUB? Would the runway there be too restricted aswell?

This isn't going to happen. I'm surprised 8herveg didn't post this as he endlessly loves to speculate on what airline will start flying into UK airports.

Who says it't aint gonna happen? If it's gonna make money it will.

Hardly a reliable source maybe, but maybe I should consider your source equally reliable!

Maybe with the 788 but EI isn't going to be in OW by then.
Well one could only wish for a charter flight.

Eh no. The wish list fantasy and hard-done-to EDI is what is getting boring, very boring infact. Simply stating the obvious that it isnt going to happen is ridiculing ????? Note oher comments from so called "non-GLA supporters" saying the same. Unless you know otherwise of course.....

Whilst I also doubt that JAL will go to EDI, I don't think it's far from impossibl;e if JAL were to operate a series of charters into EDI.

Tell me, what do you make of the GLA-ZRH-SIN by SQ rumour that GLAGAZ has been going on about? Another load of twaddle?

:S Where? If you could provide a link I'd be greatful.

As for JAL at EDI, I can't see it happening on a 744, but perhaps a 767 or 777.

Are JL's 767's even configured for long haul? I've not see them outside of Asia.

I dont do rumours. Only fact. Slightly more plausable than EDI-NRT I have to say given SQs desire to expand in Europe ( havent seen anything to suggest similar from JL) and SQs obvious comittment to secondary regional departures ie MAN.
Something like that from SQ is many years down the line.

Strictly summer only and 2x weekly NRT B763/B772 would work I'd think, not convinced that Osaka would work as well but then I'm not expert on the Japanese market! However, sounds like JAL have done a bit of research on it if the original link is to be believed so who are we to doubt them! Maybe BAA will fulfill their promise of suitable facilities for aircraft required for these flights when the airlines come calling, in this case JAL.  Yeah sure

If ou see the numbers of Japanese coming to EDI to play golf...you'd understand the desire for the flight. Now doubt it'd work weekly, but they'll never get improvements based on that frequency.

A further thought: both Tokyo and Edinburgh are major financial centres, so in addition to tourist demand it's not inconceivable there could be an element of business demand for this route too.

Wouldn't mind seeing that happen, especially if there was a decent connection with SIN-CHC. I love flying SQ and being able to avoid LHR would be great.
