Did Egypt Air & Royal Air Maroc Fly Direct To LAX?

Fri Mar 09, 2007 10:33 pm

Just wondering about the lack of African carriers at Los Angeles. Did Egypt Air and Royal Air Maroc fly non-stop to LAX before they discontinued it???? Any other African carriers serve LAX at any time?

Not sure about RAM, but I don't think Egyptair ever flew direct; it was always via JFK. MS 990 was on its way back from LAX and had just left JFK when it crashed.

MS was served via JFK i believe. Not sure if some of the flights where non-stop.
When did AT fly to LAX?
I though MS was the only african airline to venture west of chicago
Next destinations, Suarabaya, beirut, paris, Accra

I have an airline book called 'Airlines Worldwide'. It says AT served LAX, I've done some research, can't find anything on them flying to LAX, no pictures, nothing...

MS was the only African/Middle Eastern Airline to serve LAX via JFK using B767 . they never had direct flights to LAX , the route was stopped post 911 . AT never flown to LAX , the only 2 destinations they serve in N.America are YUL and JFK .

EgyptAir launched flights to LAX on 1st June 1992 with the following schedule:

CAI-LAX MS989 -2---6- 01:30/11:00 FCY B763 1 JFK
LAX-JFK MS990 -2---6- 13:00/16:30+1 FCY B763 1 JFK

It was intially operated as a summer only service until Winter 1994 when a weekly winter flight was added.

In 2000 the flights became 2x weekly year round service.

LAX was terminated in the latter part of 2001.

Are you 100% sure about that? I thought Alia Royal Jordanian Airlines served LAX also. I guess El Al would not be considered Middle East.

If including Middle Eastern carriers, yes, RJ once did serve LAX on a scheduled basis.

I'll add that SAA had a scheduled-charter program from LAX in (IIRC) 1996.

Yes RJ did serve LAX briefly in the 1980s, even before El Al did - I believe.
Iran Air had plans to start flights to LA given the large Iranian community living there, but this was cut short by the events in 1979.
AT may serve LAX via a code-share agreement I believe they have with Delta on the DL flights from JFK to LAX, but not sure.

MS started LAX services in the late 1980s. Matter of fact there are photos in the database from 1990.

When originally started MS served LAX seasonally with its new 743s. During those days, MS was offering very cheap LA-Paris prices as the flight after JFK operated via Paris enroute to Cairo.

Later on MS introduced the 763 which remained on the flights for near 10 years, before finally switching to the 777 at the very end.

Loads in generally were quite low for MS between LAX-JFK during the many 763 years. From older records I have access to many flights operated with as few as 30 people with 70-80 being the norm.

While I have seen a RAM 707 and 763 at LAX, they were operating VIP charters.

RAM was indeed supposed to start service to LAX sometime around 2000, however nothing came of it. I know they opened up a sales office in Beverly Hills and quite actively marketed the country at local trade shows, but the service never began.

RJ was a regular sight at LAX for most of the 1980s. Started in 1984 when they were still know as ALIA. Used a mix of L-1011s and B747s(only shortwhile) on routings mostly via ORD (but for a short while via YYZ or YMX) and either AMS/VIE on the Europe end.

Where is it located then?

-----

I remember being on an AT 767 sitting on the ramp in CMN for 2 hours only to taxi back to the gate because of an engine problem. The pilot said the a/c had to be pulled out of service, which freaked me out, given AT's large fleet of trans-Atlantic capable aircraft (at the time 2 767s and, I think, a disused 747). Thankfully the other 767 was ready within 2 hours or so. AT held us prisoner in smoke-filled gate area for that long, during which time I was thinking we would be stuck there overnight.  irked  A little knowledge is sometimes a bad thing.
