Delta's New Avod On 777s

Hey All,

I just got back from NRT, and due to the horrible weather at EWR, I had the unexpected pleasure of switching out my NRT-EWR CO flight with DL NRT-ATL.

I was lucky enough to get to fly onboard one of the few 777s that have the new AVOD leather economy setup. However, the AVOD system crashed and was rebooted at least 6 times during the flight. Has anyone else noticed that the system appears extremely buggy, or was it just my plane?

It was the March 17th Delta flight 56 in case anyone wanted to know

System was just installed on the bird. (last two months).

The Panasonic EFX system has been having some issues. Delta and Panasonic are working to rectify the issues.

Ha, funny you should mention that. There just happened to be a Panasonic employee in the Business Cabin, and he volunteered with one of the FAs to help fix it. I don't know if he actually knew what he was doing though, at one point he tried something which caused every reading light on the entire plane to illuminate. This was not welcomed by many of the sleeping passengers, especially since Japanese is not a language choice on the new AVOD system, which is used to control the on and off functions of the reading light. Most of the lights then remained on because many passengers could not figure out how to turn them off.

The same goes for the FA call buttons. I'm sure the FAs on these flights like the system simply for the fact that many of the passengers can't figure out how to find the call button anymore  Silly

Wow, Delta, THAT sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Or even a disaster already happening, from your flight alone.

Gee... I can see a flight attendant trying to explain that one. "Well, sorry sir, the only way to do this is through the screen that you cannot read."

Yeah, they may love that the pax can't figure out the call button... until the pax just start tugging on their sleeves!

Just curious, why is it when ever i read Trip Reports, threads, etc. The AVOD always seems to be a issue with crashing during flight. Is there a reason for this happening? Ive flown many timees on DL, CO, NW, and to my luck have never had the problem with the the AVOD crashing.

Thanks for the update. Delta is my primary choice of carrier and I am living in Japan for several years. I wouldn't have known about AVOD equipped on Delta's T7. I knew NW has them equipped on their A330s. Just hope it doesn't crash when I fly to the US. Does anyone know if the new leather interior and AVOD is just installed on this aircraft or are they using this just on the ATL-NRT-ATL leg?

DL is installing the new interiors and AVOD on all 8 of their 772ERs. To date, three planes have been completed (ships 7001, 7002, and 7005 or N860DA, N861DA, N864DA respectively).

These rotate through the system and are not particularly dedicated to a specific route. A typical rotation in the past week has been:
DL55 ATL-NRT
DL56 NRT-ATL
DL16 ATL-JFK-BOM
DL17 BOM-JFK-ATL
DL152 ATL-TLV
DL153 TLV-ATL
DL189 ATL-LAX
DL152 LAX-ATL
DL55 ATL-NRT, etc.

That's pretty much what it came down to. Passengers getting out of their seats and looking for the FAs, who were all in the back galley talking for most of the flight. Finding the call button did not do much good either, the row in front of me had their call button light on for the entire flight with no acknowledgment.

All in all though, even though it kept crashing, and videos would occasionally refuse to play, it was still a whole lot better having it than not having it at all. The only thing that kinda sucks is that after it rebooted, and you started the video you were watching up again, the fast forward was ridiculously slow getting to where you left off. It's designed to jump ahead a minute or so, play 3-4 seconds of video at regular speed, then jump forward again.

Interesting thing was you could see the Linux underpinnings of the system every time it rebooted. You had the classic black and white MS-DOS/Linux/etc. bootup screens. I did notice they are using Redhat, and the distribution they are using is from 2004. Might do them some good refreshing that a bit for stability's sake.

One thing also that I never saw mentioned here when the system was announced originally is that the new config no longer has EmPower ports, but instead standard 3-Prong AC outlets. So that's one less adapter you have to haul along with you. I only hope more and more airlines roll this style of outlet out in the future.

Also, another interesting thing I noticed. I'm not sure if it was just because the interior was so new, but the carpet was much, much more 'spongy' than on any plan I had ever flown. For some reason, the business cabin's carpet seemed even more 'spongy' than the coach cabin. Just another luxury for the elite pax I suppose!
