A380 @ JFK!

Thought I'd share these with everyone. Smile

The ducks and I patiently await. For some reason, it spent about 20 minutes in a holding pattern and then they did a runway check for it.

And here it is!!!

As you can see, I suck at photography but it was worth the 40 minute drive. Smile

Very nice pictures!!! A friend of mine went to see the plane arrive and she said it looked massive. She said it was a lot of fun. I can't wait to see her pictures.

Looks like you were really close to where I was.

For those who weren't there, a ton of cars pulled to the side of Rockaway Blvd right under the threshold of 22L. After monitoring 125.7for about 20 minutes, the A380 was cleared to begin the 22L approach. As it got close, traffic on Rockaway Blvd pretty much came to a standstill. And of course it was amazing as it passed right over us.

Afterwards, there was some press conference in T1 which I caught the end of. Lots of PA officials walking around...And after that, Mir and I noticed that the 380 was being towed. So we drove to a remote spot across from the old Pan Am hangar and sure enough the A380 arrived there in a few minutes.

I met some nice people while waiting for it to land and in Terminal 1, but didn't catch if any of you were A.net members. So if anyone here reads this and was there please drop me a message!

VERY nice pics!! They are better than mine and I was on the AOA at JFK LOL!

When I saw it going base to final, it looked huge. All the way through final it looked huge. Then when it was about to touch down I was looking at it from the side...and it seemed small, stubby almost. A couple of folks commented that it looked like a double decker A310 with 4 engines because it was stubby looking. There was too much traffic at T1 to get close and personal. I have a feeling that I just am not able to appreciate the size until I am right next to the thing.

I was impressed at the jetbridge setup they had at T1 gate 1 for the A380. Very smart the way they did that!

Hopefully a few others who are at JFK or later on at ORD or LAX will also contribute some shots to this thread. Great to see the A380 make a stop in the good old U.S.A. Hopefully now Boeing will get the first 787 Dreamliner out the door at PAE for testing and give us a similar show sooner or later.

Wondering if it's worth making a trip after work; I live not far from the airport.

Behind the old Pan Am Hangar...If you drive through the backroads of JFK, you can get a great view of it.

I forgot to mention is that the reason it waited for 20min is that the pilot did not want to land until 12:15 so they but it in a holding pattern until then

This is where it is parked...I circled the spot in red. If you drive around the long-term parking lot, there is a great spot where you can see it from.

I don't know how the gate was before the A380 preparation project, but it now looks like a hallway extends from the terminal. If you were walking down that hallway to get on the plane, on the left side is a jetbridge that leads to the lower level. If you walked to the end of the hallway, you would go into a secondary jetbridge that takes you to the second level. So, they have 2 separate jetbridges coming out of one gate. Sorry, but my pics did not come out all too well, hopefully some one will have snapped a shot while it was at the gate.

I second NOT AT ALL! These are terrific shots. But that I work today, I'd been out there, as well. Just because I'm somewhat pessimistic about the A380's ultimate sales potential doesn't mean I don't think it's one amazing BIG Bird! bigthumbsup

I left home at 10am for what I thought was a routine 1 hour 30 minute drive from Boonton New Jersey to JFK via George Washington Bridge. I got stuck in traffic about 2 miles from George Washington Bridge, for about 1 hour and had to turn arround at Englewood NJ and drove south, all the way to Staten Island to take the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge.

Needless to say, I missed the landing but I ended up with excellent close up shots. When I eventually got to JFK at 1pm, The Airbus was conveniently parked at Terminal 1, at the first air bridge close to the roadway leading to the departures area.

I found some people attempting to take shots through the fence. I tried a few shots but my Nikkor Lens were too big and the shots had the shadows of the fence links on them. It was then that I spied a couple of guys on a nearby access bridge leading to Terminal 1 departures.

I went up the bridge and found an excellent vantage point above the fence and airport equipment and took pictures of the gorgeous aircraft. As a great bonus, 20 minutes after I got there, the Airbus was pushed back presenting excellent opportunities for close up shots. It was then towed out of sight towards a hangar.

It was worth missing a day at work and it made the hassles getting to JFK worthwhile. I met 2 guys from Anet, but they were too busy to chat.

Hi,

I was there at T1's food court today - wished I could've bumped into a few a.netters! It was a magnificent sight as the 380 approached gate 1 under clear skies.

I was struck by the looks of the plane - it does look a a huge luxury bus of the skies! Airbus's mission appears precisely that, - not to build Dreamliners and so on, but to continue the legacy of the A300 - a 'Volksflugzueg".

Managed to get into the press event in LH's lounge (?) and got to hear speeches from one and all, including the pilots - Capt Juergen Raps, and of course, Mr. Leahy.

Leahy speaks well, and started his speech by remarking that he was a cab driver in the 70's at JFK when the first 747s were coming in, so this was an important moment for him. 747 for 20th Century, and 380 for the 21st.

Also heard a LH bigwig say that the A380 was 30% quieter than a 747 on landing.

Most striking was the line up of the cabin crew up on the balcony as a backdrop - reminded me of a Rockettes line up - with FAs like that, sign me up for the next flight!

Overall a fun day! Wish I had a pass to go see the inside of the plane at 5.30 pm today - hope some of you are and will share pics.

Don't know if this was posted on ready on this thread, but the A380 actually did a fly-over of LH's US headquarters in East Meadow, NY for all of the employees that couldn't make it out to JFK. They were all standing on the roof to see the plane.

I was out on the AOA too, watched it land, then got driven over to T1 and watched it go to gate. Beautiful, quiet bird. Absolutly amazing. I didnt want to leave!

I was in perfect position to get some pics as it left FRA this morning as I was flying on DL from FRA- CVG, but right as it pushed back the gate agents flushed everyone out of the gate area so they could do passport checks. A damn shame as the DL gates are directly abeam the threshold of 25R! Angry

If someone from the media ever tweaks you for calling those geese 'ducks,' they'd better shut their pie holes. This is the same media that said the A380 flew faster than the speed of sound.

Dumb quacks.

Those were FABULOUS pictures. Up here in Nashua, NH I was thinking of looking out my office window to see if I could see the jet contrailing overhead. But I think it flew well to the east of us, perhaps out over the ocean as it came down the coast of Maine.

I did manage to see her and got a few shots. It was amazing to see the fanfare that surrounded the arrival!

The shots I took today are still in the screening queue here. However, I did put a few up, currently at Jetphotos. Thank goodness the weather was near perfect!

I just watched a video on NBC website. Was the A380 that went to LAX from Australia or France. I was watching NBC nightly news and they said the A380 going to LAX was from France, on the website they said it was from Australia. If it was from France, I wonder if it went over Minnesota. I was looking at contrails for a little bit.

On the next archive, ground offered to send a JetBlue flight around the terminals the long way so that they could see the 380. And they accepted.
