Looks "chubby" a bit like the B747SP did i.e. it has "too small" a fuselage for the size of its extremities - like a lion or tiger cub - as if it were designed with a bigger fuselage, then reduced...which in a way it is - a Version -1. Once it grows into its "normal" (bigger) fuselage it will look "better" proportioned...

You certainly don't suck at photography, those are some nice pictures as are those of the others. A clear blue winter sky and a nice plane, what else could you want in a picture?

I was fortunate to get up close to it at JFK from landing to taxi-in at Terminal one. She is big, tall, and round but not very long. Parked next to a Korean 747-400, I was able to make a direct comparison between the 2. It has an oval kind of shape to it while the 747 looks much more like a bullet. I was impressed by the size of the engines, wingspan and the cargo doors. Every thing about her is big.

According to an NY Times article, it'll be doing a flyover of Manhattan. Should be quite a sight.

It's going to be a local area flight for media and invited guests. I imagine it will be working out of T1 again, but I don't know for sure. I would expect it to be up and down Rwy 22L/4R since that is the only one at JFK currently wide enough for her.

I'm curious about something, though. Moose135 had pics of all of the flight crew and it looks like they are LH employees. How why were they selected to be on this flight? Was it a seniority thing or was there some kind of lottery to determine this? This isn't meant to be "flamebait", I'm wondering how one gets to be on flights of this nature, that's all.

It departed off of 31L today. Perhaps it's only a landing issue with 4R/22L.

IIRC, the 380 only has the reversers on the # 2 and 3 engines.

The flight & cabin crew were all LH employees, as this was officially a "proving flight" for LH. I spoke with the Chief Purser following the press conference, he said he had been working on the A380 project for LH for several years, which is how he was chosen for the flight. I suppose it was a mix of employees who have been involved with it and seniority. They did have over 100 LH employees as passengers, he said they were selected by a lottery (out of over 13,000). Interestingly, the flight was supposed to carry close to 550 pax, however nearly 100 didn't make the trip. He said snowstorms in northern Germany caused problems with people trying to connect into Frankfurt for the flight. Wonder if JetBlue was handling that portion of the trip Big grin

After being up close I can say that although the A380 is dimensionally larger than a 747-400, IMHO the 747-400 seems larger to me. Embarrassment

That's a whole can of worms. Wink

Anyway as mentioned further up, the 380 only has reversers on the outboards. This saves weight and prevents FOD ingestion.

That is a great graphic. People have this distorted image that its a behemoth over the 747 when its only fractionally larger.

Thanks, good photo. But I wonder if the lense do not affect the comparison in this picture. What I'm looking for is a side by side shot of both planes, now that would be interesting. As far as I know there isn't any yet. I've seen the graphic comparison posted above many times and wanted to see it for real.

Indeed. However not that the graphic shows the 747-8. Also, even though the footprint is not that much larger the 380 is much more massive than the 747 with two full decks. The wings are also much larger.

Having seen both up close, I was left a bit unimpressed. Sure the wings are larger and its got the taller features. But it's just not that much larger than a 747. It's not saying I don't like it but I was just a bit unimpressed is all. Having spoken to others there, they shared similar opinions. It was an event to see but I wasn't wowed. And truth is I probably won't be wowed with the 787 either Wink
