Quoting WorldTraveler (Reply 4): DFW taxiways cross the road that goes through the center of the airport. |
Quoting WorldTraveler (Reply 4): ATL's new runway crosses I-285 which is 5 or so lanes on each side... the runway crosses the interstate near the mid-point of the runway. the tunnels under the runway are massive and you really don't know you are crossing a freeway when you are on the runway because there is so much room on either side of the runway. |
Quoting Captaink (Reply 8): am almost 100% sure I crossed a road at JFK as well. P.S. just to add or that an airplane crossed over us as we were driving |
Quoting Rsg85 (Reply 12): wynyard airport (ywyy) in Australia has a railway crossing on RWY 23, aircraft give way to the trains |
Quoting KC135TopBoom (Reply 7): That is because the runway safety area (to each side of the runway) is 250' on each side, measured from the runway centerline. Then with the slopes required, and other engineering needs, you are probibly looking at a tunnel 800'-1000' long. If it crosses 10 lanes of interstate (Interstate lanes are required to be 12' wide, so the distance is at least 120', but probibly closer to 135'. Is there any center support lags or wall? If not, there would need to be 135'-150' of dirt on top of the tunnel. I take it the roadway decends as it enters the tunnel? |

Quoting Kraw (Reply 19): there is a center "wall" that divides the different directions of traffic. The interstate is level. |
Quoting HeliflyerPDC (Reply 25): what about a taxiway ,that's actually a normal street EBKT is an example |
Quoting Ckfred (Reply 9): Now, the sign admonishes all aircraft not to stop on the bridges (A second one was built, so that aircraft could taxi in both directions simultaneously.). My guess is that the sign and new operation restriction was a result of September 11th. |

Quoting WorldTraveler (Reply 36): The interstate existed before the runway and I don't believe was rebuilt. They did haul in a huge amount of dirt to raise the level of the runway not only to provide plenty of height over the interstate but also so that the new runway would be at a similar height as the existing airfield. |

Quoting Carduelis (Reply 2): The LHR crossing closed last year, so no longer relevant! Where was this ? I can't recall a public road crossing a runway at LHR, unless you are referring to the central access tunnel which is very much still open. |

Quoting Columbia107 (Reply 1): Mind you in those days very few aircraft landed or took off from Gibraltar airport which is a military airfield and its official name is RAF North Front Gibraltar. |
