Grand Airlines Of Manila

Mon Mar 26, 2007 9:09 am

Many years ago we flew onboard a GREAT DC-8 out of Manila... Called Grand Airlines...Truly a blast from the past, and as we were first class and the drinks were free, got totally wrecked, it was really great. Anyone know who was behind this short lived venture? Any pix of the planes? Thanks!

There's a 732 at TPE in "Grand Airlines" livery ... blue and yellow IIRC ... always wondered what was up with that one.

All the F/A's were female, and had "full figures" no accident they were hired for being so stacked. Captain was a tiny chinese kid who had a hard time with english. Plane had oil leaking from every engine, but when it rotated it went up like an f-16, pure power. Sad this funky airline bit the dust. Give me a creaking old greaser everytime! Tired of these sterle cookie cutter clones.

They had an A300 as well, though i think it was only painted in their colors and never flew for them commerically.

It was a short-lived venture. I remember being shocked at another Filipino airline operating internationally. PAL used to have a monopoly over the entire aviation scene, and then liberalization came. There were so many new startups, but of the new carriers, only Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines survived.

747hogg...Were you so "wrecked" that you may have mistaked Manila for Las Vegas???  Smile I honestly only remember the Philippine carrier operating 737-200's and A300's, but I could be wrong. The other Grand Air that at first was associated with the Las Vegas MGM Hotel flew luxury class DC-8-62's between LAX, LAS and JFK with similar colors to that of the airline in the Philippines.

They had A300 and B737s.

1 737-200 still sitting in Taipei after court ruling after bankruptcy of the airline.

If memory serves correctly, the same people behind Cebu Pacific.

Nope.... This was a DC-8 !!! The "coke nose" vents gave it away. Plus I was on one of the first DC-8 flights out of LAX back in 1958. From the Philippine Village flop house you could see her sitting next to a Connie! Stunned to learn this was a Philippine A/L!! IMO the best and warmest F/A's are Filipino crews... Just a real pleasure to feel appreciated.

Err, PAL was the only Filipino airline to make a transpac ever . And they did operate the DC-8 once upon a time.
