I guess they chose ROW over Alamogordo(ALM) because ALM is only 80 miles from ELP so keeping local traffic would be difficult. ROW and Carlsbad are quite isolated so service by any carrier is probably welcomed with open arms.

Absolutely.
American Eagle also had plans to fly into Ruidoso (RUI), but the service never materialized. I hope that doesn't happen with ROW.

Hope it works out better than the much touted American Eagle service in FMN (Farmington, NM in the northwest corner of the state). Service ended after a year.

I don't think there is any question that Eagle could probably make DFW-ROW work, but I question whether it will be economically viable long-term if operated with RJs? If Eagle sent 2-3 SAABs, I don't think there would be any problem, but I am not sure if a market as small and undeveloped as Roswell can support the operating costs of regional jets, even if the route is subsidized or supported.

Would the SAABs be more economical? This would probably be the longest stage length for the SAAB Eagle network - this is probably just under a 600 mile flight (DFW-ELP is 550) Even if they were more economical, I do not know if a 3 hour ride on a SF-340 would be that popular.

This would be thanks to a SCASD grant given to ROW to attract either American Eagle to DFW or Continental Express to IAH.
I'd also note though, that Mesa/Air Midwest has said it may need to pull out of ROW if it is successful in attracting jet service, as Mesa/Air Midwest anticipates its passenger levels to drop in that instance.

I think that is probably an astute asumption on Mesa's part. If they're offering a few flights per day with 19-seat props with no lavs to ABQ, while Eagle will be offering two daily flights on 44-seat jets with leather seats (and lavs!) to the world's second largest hub, Mesa may face a bit of a competition problem. That being said, I'd hate to see ROW put all its eggs in the Eagle basket because, after six months, if Eagle gets insecure and leaves (talk to DLH) ROW will then be left with no service.

Actually, when Eagle came to FMN, YV increased their service (and at the time were already running 11 flts a day to ABQ, 10 a day (UAX) to DEN, and 6 a day (HPX) to PHX). If I recall, they added 1 each to the hubs, and an HPX daily to LAS on an Brasilia (in response to the Eagle flts that operated FMN-LAS-LAX). Who knows, maybe ROW will come out ahead....

It still shocks me that more airlines don't serve SAF. Anyone have an explanation as to why?

No, if there is a larger demand, a ERJ would be fine. A Q400 would be most economical, if Eagle ever gets them.

It was in the mid-90s. First with SAABs, then with ATR-72s, then back to SAABs...

My tt indicate New service to Farmington began 9/7/1994 and was discontinued sometime before 9/6/1995. The city is shown, but no schedule to there in 9/6/95 timetable.
They had an 0700 FMN-AMA-DFW SF3 and also an 0730 FMN-LAS-LAX S3.
I always assumed this service was to exchange SF3 aircraft between DFW and LAX hubs and little else.
As a sidenote, I have thought that a ROW-PHX nonstop would do okay,as well.

Well, ALM has YV's 1900D's coming in there which is a change. They did it for the longest time and they stopped in 2001 (I think). I know they left sometime between 2001 and 2002. Westwind used to service ALM and LRU with PC-12's a few years ago but they went belly up I think. They were trying to get another PC-12 to service LRU-GUP-PHX but that never materialized.

I always wondered why YV didn't offer through ticketing on their intra-New Mexico ABQ-XXX flights (xxx being your favorite station in NM). It's not like the locals could afford to pay what Mesa was charging for their flights...so they never attracted anyone but the business traveller on these flights. If they connected with the majors at ABQ, I think it would have been a different story...
Of course, Orenstien found his goldmine by doing the regional flying for HP, and then doing UA.

Regarding SAF. Airfield elevation is 6300ft and the longest rwy is 8300ft. Weight restrictions come into play because of the high altitude. Mountain Air Express (MAXair) did serve ABQ-SAF-DEN on a code share for WestPac just before their demise, but I dont recall Lone Star serving SAF, they did however have svc from SRR (Ruidoso) to DFW with a stop at either ABI or MAF, and one point I think they also served ROW. Besides YV ROW had TransColorado In the 80s whose flts were to ELP and ABQ, but you still have to connect just to get to a hub and then go on. Eagle might pull this off if its marketed well to all of Southeastern NM. People in CNM and HOB will be happier to simply drive to ROW instead of the 4hrs it takes to drive to ABQ, ELP, MAF or LBB. This will be intresting to watch.

I know that in 1997 Lone Star/Aspen Mountain Air flew from DFW to Santa Fe, Aspen and Del Rio as a codeshare with American. I think, though, that these flights ended sometime in 1997 or 1998, as I think the company went out of business around that time.

I wonder if there would be any potential for putting together ski packages to Ski Apache with this service together. Yes I know, it's not Colorado, but it's cheaper and closer.
