Delivery Of AC's First 77W - Video & Pics

Hello.

Some people have requested pictures of the March 31st, delivery flight of Air Canada's first triple-seven to YUL. I am happy to oblige.

I decided to create a new topic instead of sticking it into an already existing AC 777 thread as many of them are quite long.

Figuring their will be many people taking pics of this a/c, I took mostly video. So there are a few pics below followed by 4 videos. Enjoy.

The 77W just after exiting the runway. I am always amazed at the size of the engines on the 777.

Heading for Air Canada's maintenance bay at YUL. It will be the main attraction at an Air Canada event celebrating both it's arrival and AC's 70th anniversary.

AC brought in their restored L10A for this occasion. It did a low level flyby and landed just ahead of the 77W
That's one shinny a/c!

Video of the 77W's flyby. I wasn't in the right position at the time so it takes a few seconds for it to appear. It eventually disappears behind a building.

Landing of the 77W of 24L. Besides the length of this beast, I was amazed at how quiet it was. Hardly a sound as it went by. You'll see for yourself on the video.

Wow, amazing videos and nice photos YULspotter! My friend and loyal forum member and photoscreener TristarYUL is probably on this aircraft so you caught him on camera as well!!

I just love the new livery of AC and it looks just stunning on the 77W!!! Airbus must be kicking themselves for losing such an important and big customer. I never thaught AC would go for Boeing aircraft again but they did and with a BIG order too. Competition is good! Good luck to AC and their first 77W.

Wow that plane is long!! Cant wait to see some interior shots of J and Y class. Just one thing Im trying to solve, did AC used to fly LHR to NCE on a Tristar???

What I feel is the plane is very long, i.e. when I went on the tour of the plane, it takes 'forever' to walk from the tail to the front. The "stand up bar" in the executive class also 'eye opening'

I like the new plane smell, and everything is 'dustless', including the engine. Smile

77W is the code for 777-300ER aircraft.

For 777s they go:

777/772 - 777-200
772/77E - 777-200ER
773 - 777-300
77L - 777-200LR
77W - 777-300ER

Geez...nice videos - I wish I had been able to drive over there and watch this.

A few questions come to mind - Maybe someone can answer:

1) Who flies the plane to YUL - a Boeing Pilot or an AC pilot? Are there any passengers on board?

2) Was the tour of the plane open to the public or just a select few or employees only?

3) What does AC need to do to this plane before it enters service in a few days? Inspections? Loading it up with their in-flight stuff?

4) Is the IFE similar to the system on the ERJs (which I find to be quite good)?

My wife is lucky enough to be flying on this beast from YUL to YYZ on thrusday night - got her a points ticket to go visit her sister and by fluke she ended up on this plane (assuming no changes)...Means nothing to her though. On my next trip to LHR - in late may - I am going to intentionally fly through Toronto to test out the new Exec class suites...Can't inamge how much better they are compared to the 333s I normally fly.

1) I believe a company pilot brings a new plane home after the official handover from the manufacturer. Until that point, only (Boeing Company) pilots had flown it. Generally there are no passengers - certainly not revenue paying ones - but in this case, AC held an internal contest in which a few hundred selected employees accompanied the plane to Montreal.

2) The event on Saturday was open to AC employees, their family members and invited guests only. If you and I want a tour of the airplane, AC will gladly provide one in exchange for a paid ticket starting next week. First come, first served.

can't wait to fly it in two weeks. flying from YWG to LGA, and decided to do the extra connection from YYZ to YUL to get the chance to fly this guy, and get the miles too. Got it on the way back too...

I forgot the names of the two pilots who flew the beast to YUL, they belong to AC. My dad told me last night..

What strikes me about the 773-ER in the video of it landing is how massivly long its wings are. IT looks very nice in the AC colors. I actually saw her at Paine Field in Everett during spring break, along with a second one. They are beautiful.

I totally agree. With the -300ER's wingspan at 212ft 7inches it is over a foot longer than the 747-400ER (211ft 5inches). Quite impressive!

Minor service modifications, placarding, addition of on-board safety equipment specific to AC.

An upgraded/next generation Thales system. Certificiation of this system was still pending by Boeing at the time of delivery. It's an upgrade over the EMJ's, but full functionality will be in place in the near future. The Embraer's have the Thales i4500 system, the 777's will have the i5000 system IIRC.

Just curious, is the 77W a relatively new version of the 777 or was it available at the launch of the type?

IIRC, Korean Air used to fly 77Ws to YYZ many years ago.

The standard (non-ER) 777-300 is basically just a stretched standard -200 and went into service in 1998, 3 years after the -200. Only 60 of the standard -300s were sold, all to Asian carriers (CX/NH/JL/KE/MH/SQ/TG) plus Emirates.

The -300ER went into service in 2004 and has numerous changes under the skin to permit much greater range (higher gross weight, different landing gear, extra fuel capacity etc). The most visible (not that it's very obvious either) difference from the standard -300 is the 13 foot greater wingspan and raked wingtips of the -300ER which it shares with the longest range 777 model, the -200LR which AC has also ordered for routes like YVR-SYD nonstop.

Several of the standard -300 operators have since added the -300ER to their fleets. I don't think any standard -300s have been sold since the -300ER was introduced.

relatively new. it was first offered a bit after Airbus first offered the 346. At the time of the 777 launch, the idea that anyone could build a 115k lb passenger jet engine of high reliability was not taken seriously. It took many years to get to the point that such a beast could even be launched.

I got to loiter around the aircraft while it was on public (for AC staff) display at the base later that afternoon, and it is ... HUGE. I'm quite used to flying in and seeing 777s from a distance, but when one is standing underneath it the feeling is quite different.

The coach cabin sported the new Air Canada seats which were remarkably comfortable. More surprising than that was the legroom! Probably the most I have ever seen on any airline - I had enough room to stretch my legs without hitting my knee on the seat ahead of me, and I'm a good 6ft. The IFE was in idiot-mode but looked promising, there was a USB port in the seat ... no idea why. But the seats were in that disgusting 3-3-3 configuration which I loath so much. Removing something from the overheads is downright dangerous for the person in the aisle seat, never mind using the reading light.

Business was much less pleasing than I would have imagined. The seats were about 30° offset to the direction of travel, and rather uncomfortable. They were far too narrow in my opinion, once seated I felt like I was in a bucket, and converting the seat to bed mode proved dangerous for the feet unless special care was taken to maneuver your feet while the seat flattened itself.

The didn't let us into the cockpit, but I will be going with a friend of mine later this week...

If this beautifull baby is coming into YYZ on thursday, she'll fly right over my house as I live on the West side of Pearson right in between 15 L & 15R. Will take shots if the wind is right! Makes me feel envious though as I leave for YYC on a Westjet 737-800 the next day!

iPod integration is my guess. Many airlines are adding this as announced late last year, and I think AC was on the list. You should be able to play your music and videos through it, though not sure why you'd need to play your music through it, when your iPod can play music directly. Maybe so you don't lose charge?

Most likely to keep the iPod charged up. I imagine that won't be a luxury on a 16 hour nonstop! I have a brand new VW; there's an aux. jack in the glove box; technically I can play my iPod off it by plugging a cable between the headphone and aux. jacks, but I opted for a the full optional iPod integration; I can select my playlists from the car's head unit from the "CD2" function, and the little beastie's battery is kept topped up. I love it!

Just a quick note, you may mean 05, 06L, 06R as these would be the runways in use if the aircraft is approaching from the west. The runways you mentioned would mean an arrival from the north over Brampton and unless the wind is blowing stiffly from the south unlikely to be used.

Beautiful videos. Thanks for sharing. I don't like new AC livery, but I have to admit that seeing it in motion on the Mighty Triple Seven makes it appear a lot better than on the still images.

These films only confirm to me that 777 is the most beautiful widebody aircraft ever designed by a human being.

They do have a ton of 772's but as far as 777-300's goes, I don't think thy have ER's which are the 77W's.
