MAS And Alitalia To Sign Code-Share Agreement

Thu Apr 05, 2007 2:15 am

Malaysia Airlines and Alitalia will sign a code-share agreement at the Malaysia Airlines Academy in Kelana Jaya (a suburb of Kuala Lumpur) at 10:15 a.m. (or 4:15 a.m. Europe Daylight Time) tomorrow. The extent of the code-share agreement has not been provided yet.

Malaysia Airlines' current code-share agreement with alliance partners:

Star Alliance: All Nippon Airways, bmi, South African Airways, Swiss, and Thai (plus Austrian before they ceased their KUL flights)
OneWorld Alliance: Cathay Pacific
Skyteam Alliance: KLM, Korean, and soon Alitalia (and recently, MH is no longer a partner in DL's Skymiles FFP).

Perhaps, this will be another step for MH towards Skyteam membership?

Some discussions pertaining to the news from the Malaysian Aviation Thread. The news came out 13 days ago.

Quoting 9MMAR (Reply 162):
the next couple of weeks, we will sign code-share agreements that will give us access to many Southern European points

Quoting 9MMAR (Reply 162):
Great news. Very exciting to watch. MH-Alitalia ties in the making?

Quoting 9MMAR (Reply 178):
Indeed it became a reality. From the same article:
"MAS is close to closing a deal with Italian airline Alitalia, Idris said, while the airline was also talking to China and India to do similar deals with airlines in the country."

I appreciate you compiling any aviation news related to Malaysia, however, I think this news is new thread worthy.

I always view this development as merely a way of MAS getting into bed with Skyteam. KUL-FCO is hardly a key route for MAS compared to AMS which gets double-daily 747 services on MAS + KLM.

When will we see further cooperation with KLM? Current codeshare agreement is only limited to key cities in Scandinavia when in fact there's huge potential in both european shorthaul and transatlantic services. I can't help suspecting AF have a thing or two to do with this.

Air India also code-shares with SQ on the India-Singapore-US routes too.

MAS has already indicated in their media report that it is seeking code-sharing agreements with Jet Airways and China Southern. Both airlines already code-share with KLM.

Keno - the MAS and KLM code-share also includes flights to Australia and New Zealand and I guess you may be correct about AF continuing to be a 'stick in the mud' with regards to expansion of the KLM-MAS code-share which has been successful for perhaps a decade (if not more) now.

More info about the code-share:

- Alitalia (AZ) will place its code on Malaysia Airlines' (MH) Rome-Kuala Lumpur; Kuala Lumpur - Penang/Sydney/Melbourne/Perth flights.

- MH will place its code on AZ's Rome - Milan/Barcelona/Athens/Geneva/Madrid/Frankfurt (FRA puzzles me! Is MH planning to suspend FRA flights?)

- Not looking to add frequencies between KUL and FCO in the near future.

- Looking into reciprocal FFP accrual/redemption benefits.

MAS and KLM code-share also includes flights to Australia and New Zealand

KLM used to have direct services to SYD before but economics dictate that they would be better off let a codeshare carrier do it by offering daily services to multiple points across Australia and New Zealand. The same can be said with MAS via KLM's hub in AMS as MH/KL flight schedules in are particularly suited for transatlantic services to major cities in USA and Canada. MAS is currently serving a pathetic 3x weekly to EWR, itself barely survives the chop last year if it wasn't for government intervention for the sake of Visit Malaysia Year 2007 (or so they say).

FCO never has been a particularly strong station for MAS compared to LHR and AMS, not to mention the financial fragility of Alitalia (brankruptcy, takeover etc). In my opinion this arrangement with Alitalia is rather short-sighted; what MAS needs to do urgently is enhance its existing cooperation with KLM.

Or..join skyteam full out, realizing that besides Emirates and Qatar, they are the best airline in the world probably not in an alliance  Wink
