Honestly, I wouldn't mind this one if they would just keep the top half of the widget a medium to light blue, changed the black to dark blue, and bothered to put a cheatline on it somewhere - even a thin one, or alternately, making the title a little bit bigger. Right now, it's too white and it doesn't have enough blue on it! I know lots of airlines are blue, but just addding a little bit would be nice - and keeping with Delta's roots, too.

Well that I can understand. However I thought the post was referring to the livery's ugliness responsible for sending DL to BK court.. LOL

But why is DL changing their livery again anyhow. It is hard to even say what is the current one.

If you look closely the tail is blue. It's just a really really dark blue. Kinda like the old cheatline on the widget livery. I agree though, from a distance it does look black.

I'm one of the very few who actually likes it...though, I will admit, that I do prefer the current one more.

Why does DL change its livery SOOOOOO MUCH more than any other airline out there? Isn't it expensive?

So did the navy blue on the old widget livery. By the time the last planes were repainted, the blue looked black. I like the new look. Now if they would just stop changing it every five years!  Wink

DL should have added a white widget to the middle of the wavy gravy tail scheme and called it a day. This would have highlighted the widget and kept expenses down. The new livery is OK, as others mentioned, the fuselage looks too generic. Make the font of the letters and widget much larger and add a cheat line. My 2 cents

PU-LEASE -

Any time ANY AIRLINE changes livery - everyone says THEY HATE IT. Why? Because it is different. Isn't there more to a brand than the paint job on their aircraft? PLEASE reserve your comments for 6 months after it is released. IF IT IS EVEN RELEASED. Nothing has been confirmed.

Wow. As one of the (apparently few) people who thought that the current livery was one of the best-looking ones in the sky (even in the absence of the widget), this one is the pits.

I don't mind the body, and I think the font is an improvement (though the all-red widget next to it is a mistake - should be red and blue like it's always been), but the tail....  vomit

We all know what it is, because we know what the widget is supposed to look like. You grab Joe Gold Medallion off the street, show him the tail and ask what airline it is, and while you might get the correct answer, there'd be a lot of squinting and head-angling first.

Maybe it's one of those that will grow on me. I hope so.

I did this very quickly just to see what it might look like on a 738.

The new colors are ok, but I don't think they'll win any awards with this concept.

What is that old saying about baseball teams? You know, the ones which don't know what they are doing or are never very good always seem to change their uniforms every few years?  Wink

While I think DL should be quite proud of its re-emergence from BK, if they are going to spend buckets of $$$ on a new livery, why not come up with something more...oh I don't know...captivating?

Like I said earlier...the tail, ok, I can probably live with...even though they could have done a LOT better...what's with the red widget? The classic red/white/blue didn't need to be changed. That fuselage though, man, that's painful to look at.

I hope this thread gets over to the folks at DL corporate.

As many have said, some will like it, others will hate it. My biggest issue with it is the tail. Don't chop the widget.

I'm with you. If you chop the widget and rotate it is it really still a widget? I don't wear my wings crooked. Almost looks disrespectful to the poor widget to me. If this is the final product they need to go back and completely redo the tail in my opinion.

Boo to the new livery! I liked Wavy Gravy!

I guess bringing the widget back isn't that bad, but this tail is too....dark. It needs to be brighter.

All I can say is "WOW." Talk about a BIG disadvantage for Delta. I just hope this isn't the OFFICIAL livery right now and hope they come with some better samples.

Who came with this idea? My 5 year old cousin can design better then that.

What a weird-looking livery.

Well, if it does fly, it won't be hard to spot. Just look for the obscenely red-black tail that juts out of a eurowhite fuse.

I think that mostly it is just a huge shock to most of us because it is completely different from the current livery. However, I have been staring it for the past few hours (the dork I am) and after Concord997 posted it on the 738, I decided that I do like it.

The dark red and blue look in a way classic. I think it will grow on most of us.

Oww okay, thanks for the update. But why has DL decided to go for a new livery? Their current livery isn't that old yet and it doesn't need to be changed in my opinion, at least not yet (even though it is too white).

As mentioned in reply #12, there was a news article about this today. A.net was even mentioned.

Highlights:

Chief Executive Gerald Grinstein "has mentioned that it's something that we're looking at," Delta spokesman Jeff Battcher said.

But word of the project has circulated around Delta and on aviation Web sites such as flyertalk.com and airliners.net.

The main feature of the new design is likely to be the return of Delta's triangular shield logo, known as "the widget," to the tail of its jets, according to one employee familiar with the design.

He said a working version features an all-red version of the logo on navy blue tails. The triangular logo — currently red, white and blue — also gets a new three-dimensional look but doesn't change its basic shape, the employee said. Aircraft colors will also be tweaked, featuring a darker blue that matches recently-revamped employee uniforms, while the main fuselage color will remain white.

Big jets are flying billboards, so airlines take paint schemes seriously. Different managements also use them to put their stamp on a company or as part of broader "re-brandings." . . .
