Perhaps later they can add the rainbow to her too!

I did a marketing report in 1991 in high school, and United sent me several pictures (photos) of various fleet types in various liveries, one of which was a "prototype" 777 in the rainbow scheme. Still have it today...looks pretty nice, I'd love to see one for real.

The 777 just missed out on the rainbow

So did the A320. The first A320 was delivered just a few months after United unveiled its blue/gray scheme, this was back in 1993. The first 777 came in 1995. But I agree with you, the 777 would look good in the 80's livery.

If its true, then I would definitely like to see the retro liveries flying around. That would be very cool. I have seen a few of them on the U.S. Airways planes. The Piedmont retro jet really gets me because Piedmont was one of the carriers that I believe was flying into SAV when I used to make my grandfather take me there as a kid. Ahhh my earliest fond memories of commercial aviation. After flying 80,000 miles this year already, I still can't get enough of it.

Thanks UnitedTristar for posting those commercial clips. I especially like the one of the UA FA on her first day. "Your hot dog... medium... oops, watch the jokes.. " I am still laughing at that one.

I was talking to a friend last night at UA and he told me that UA will paint three airplanes in "Retro" colors. A B777 will get the 70's "Stars and Stripes". A B747-400 will get the 80's "Rainbow" and a B767 will retain the current "Stealth Jet" schemes. I think the stars and stripes will look awesome on a 777

I really think that something that never wore the rainbow scheme should get it rather than the 744. The 744 should get the stars and bars scheme, a 777 or A319 should get the rainbow.

Quoting Alitalia744 (Reply 15):
Maybe DL can go "retro" and destroy the abomination of the planned livery..

Oh Man, how could would that be for a 777 or 767-400 to wear the widget? Something the 777 just missed out on wearing. Wouldn't mind seeing a 737-800 wear it too.

Continental... hmmm

I think a 777 would look great in the Meatball scheme, a 737-800 in the burnt meatball
737-700 in New York Air, Frontier and People Express schemes
767-400 in Eastern colors

Northwest:

747-400 in a 50's scheme
A330-300 in bowling shoe
787 when it comes in the 1970s/80s scheme
A319 in Republic before the merger, North Central, Hughes and Southern scheme

AA

777 in TWA scheme
737-800 in Reno scheme and Air Cal scheme

So did the A320.

Yes, but they only seem to be doing retro on the widebodies: 747/767/777

A 757 would look amazing in the stars and stripes livery.

AA's retro lightning bold jet looks fantastic on the 757.

As long as they don't go overboard with the retro jets they will add some character to the UA fleet. Maybe while they're in the painting mindset they will come up with a nicer *A logo jet.

What I would LOVE to see is a retro CX jet. The green and white livery of old was very dull but very distinctive and bold. That said they'd have to slap it on aicraft that never wore it such as the 330 or the 777. It would be kind of poinless doing up a 747 as this wore it not that long ago.

A330-300 in bowling shoe

I wouldn't do that. It is true that none of the A330's at Northwest has ever worn the bowling shoe scheme, but it is too recent. I think there are a few aircraft at Northwest still wearing the bowling shoe scheme. I would rather see an A330 with the older Northwest Orient titles, that would be interesting.
Nevertheless, everything else you propose is great. A 777 with the TWA scheme dating from the 60's and early 70's would look fantastic! Smile

I guess this may be for the 80th anniversary.

A lot of employees mentioned retro-jets for the 75th but the airline didn't do it.

I thought it would be great to do a retrojet in one of each of the planes in the fleet. Doing colors that plane never flew in.

My personal favorite was the 777 in the 30s livery.

All and all very exciting if they actually do it.

Wasn't that last year?

I thought April 1926 was always recognized as the anniversary date.

So the 75th anniversary was in 2001?

It's been so long I don't remember. All I do remember is that they were going to have a big celebration and then it was a big dud. Of course 9-11 would definately put a damper on it.

I just don't remember. But according to wikipedia 1926 is correct so once again UA missed a golden opportunity to make some positive PR.

I'm with those that think that the "Friendship" colors should go on a 747-400 and the rainbow colors on a 777. Again because 744's actually HAD the rainbow colors.

The Schabak 1:600 scale Northwest A330s were actually painted in the bowling shoe scheme.

Continental should do the same, maybe bring back EA livery in loving memory of EAL after they suck all their blood out.

CO doesn't own the Eastern trademarks, and never did as Texas Air Corp. operated EA separately from CO. When EA went under the rights to those trademarks ended up in the hands of the creditors and they currently are owned by some guy up in State College, PA.

Thanks for the note, but I was just kidding!. Lighten up a little!

9-11 happened several months after April...so the only dud was management's lack of company pride...

I think it's a great idea. But maybe only a few. While United hasn't had quite so many color scheme changes as Delta, there have been a lot when compared to AA, and when you add in Ted and the Star Alliance looks it's a lot of stuff going on at the same time.

Right, but the Ted colors actually fit in nicely: same scheme, different color. I think that once the conversion is complete, it'll look great.

The 80's rainbow!!! WONDERFUL! I hope this is true and not some late April fools joke  Smile

The 777 in the 70's colors, that should look very elegant. Great choice of aircraft/paintscheme  thumbsup
