UA To Introduce "Retro Jets"

Sat Apr 07, 2007 11:25 pm

I was talking to a friend last night at UA and he told me that UA will paint three airplanes in "Retro" colors. A B777 will get the 70's "Stars and Stripes". A B747-400 will get the 80's "Rainbow" and a B767 will retain the current "Stealth Jet" schemes. I think the stars and stripes will look awesome on a 777.

That'd be great. I personally love retro jets, when done tastefully! Looking forward to seeing them!

I would rather see the "stars and stripes" on a 744 with the 777 getting the "rainbow" treatment.

That's awesome. Continental should do the same, maybe bring back EA livery in loving memory of EAL after they suck all their blood out.

Yes the 777 would look great in the rainbow colours. It's great to see larger aircraft within a fleet recieving retro jet schemes rather than the smaller aircraft within the fleet  Smile

Well given how quickly the shoddy new color paint jobs are peeling off, their planes will soon look like AA.

I don't know what company is doing the painting for UA, but they should be sued. I saw a 757 in new colors the other day and it looked like half the paint hand come off already.

CO doesn't own the Eastern trademarks, and never did as Texas Air Corp. operated EA separately from CO. When EA went under the rights to those trademarks ended up in the hands of the creditors and they currently are owned by some guy up in State College, PA.

AWESOME! A striped 777 would be the bomb!!! AQ's retro "funbird" jet was a hit although kind of awkward since the same 732 probably wore that scheme about 25-30 years ago!

Does your friend have a reliable source? I've been waiting for UA to do retrojets for 10 years...and I have trouble believing this.

If true, AWESOME!!! Though I wish they would use the friendship colors right before the 4 stars livery, I hate that one...

I find it sort of funny about the 747-400 getting the 1974 Saul Bass colors... if UA chooses an early build 744, wouldn't that be returning the plane to its original colors?

Still, I'm looking forward the most to the "Stars & Stripes" 777 Friend Ship.

I think a rainbow-colored plane will make people think it's one they just forgot to re-paint rather than a special 'retro' scheme. If they are going to go back in time, better to go WAY back than 'sorta' back (which is what the rainbow scheme is, to me at least).

Might be a bit too early for a "retro jet" in the gray livery considering how many UA planes are still flying around in that livery, but I've been hoping for a "rainbow" livery retro-jet for a while. Definitely my favorite of the UA liveries although the newest version is quite nice.

I would also love to see a CO plane or two in the gold/red meatball livery, as well as the return of the original DL widget. Doesn't look like that's happening though!

Absolutely! The first 744's were in the rainbow scheme, so that isn't much of a change.

I think a rainbow-colored plane will make people think it's one they just forgot to re-paint rather than a special 'retro' scheme.

I don't think so. Because it is now nearly ten years that we have not seen any United aircraft in that scheme, it was in late 1997 that the last United aircraft in the rainbow scheme was repainted in the blue/gray scheme. And since the rainbow scheme there have been two color scheme changes, one introduced in 1993 and one introduced in 2004.
If the plan on reintroducing the 80's scheme as retro then they should do it on the B777 or the A320, bot not on any other aircraft, because those two have never worn the rainbow scheme (blue/red/orange thick cheatline) on a white background introduced in the 70's.
If they plan on reintroducing the 60's scheme as retro with the stars then they can do it on any aircraft type they currently have because none of the ones they have today (2007) has ever worn that scheme.

American did that on a B757 and B737-800
Delta did that on a B767-200
Turkish Airlines did that on an A320
Lufthansa did that on an A321
Avianca did that on a B757
Air Canada did that on an A319
SAS did that on an A319
US Airways/America West did that on a few A319 to remember past airlines including Piedmont, Allegheny and the first America West livery.

I love retro jets!

I stand to correct my earlier post -- the MAINLINER scheme was by Raymond Loewy, who also did Pan Am's globe and the up to recent Alitalia. I mistakenly referred to it as Saul Bass, who designed the rainbow stripe with tupil in the 70s. Sorry...

That was my thinking. The 777 just missed out on the rainbow, but would look good in it.

The 747 deserves the stars and stripes. The rainbow will just feel so what to many people, because we so it so many times for so long...

Ditto. The rainbow livery was what UA had when it acquired the Asia/Pacific routes from Pan Am. It was also symbolic of the time when UA was Allegis and tried to market both the airline and the hotel concept under one umbrella.

The Friendship livery was never used on the 777, so it's fitting that this livery is retro-fitted on this aircraft. Perhaps later they can add the rainbow to her too!

Sun Apr 08, 2007 11:33 pm
