WestJet Fills Harmony Gap - Fleet To 85 In 2009

Sun Apr 15, 2007 4:43 am

WestJet has placed orders for 2 more 737's to be leased from the Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise (SALE) that will be delivered in late 2009. The lease includes one 737-700 and one 737-800. "As WestJet builds on it's partnership with SALE, we are thrilled to add two more leased aircraft to our 2009 growth plans," Said Sean Durfy, WestJet President.

WestJet currently has 64 aircraft in their fleet, and six more on track to be delivered in 2007, six more in 2008 and nine more in 2009. WestJet will have 85 registered aircraft at the end of 2009.

WestJet also announced on Thursday, that it would add some routes, frequencies, and destinations to fill the void left by the departure of Harmony Airways.

Daily non-stop service from Vancouver will commence on the following dates to the following destinations:

- April 28, 2007 to Las Vegas, Nevada
- May 14, 2007 to Toronto, Ontario (totalling six flights every business day)
- November 4, 2007 to Honolulu, Hawaii
- November 4, 2007 to Maui (Kahului), Hawaii
- November 4, 2007 to Palm Springs, California.

I just saw that and was going to post it in the old Harmony thread - you beat me to it!! It was inevitable this was going to happen, but it will now be even harder for HQ to start again, even as a charter operator. AFAIK, they havent revealed if they will continue to offer the premium product when they come back as a charter operator, but I cant think they will. Therefore without offering the benefit of the service levels, unless they are are operating exclusively for a tour operator providing the pax, I think they will have a very hard job enticing pax back from WS with their obvious benefits.

Re HNL, any chance of FJ switching their codeshare to WS or any update if they've decided to reverse their decision to axe YVR with their own metal?

At the end of the day, WS know what their business plan is, are sticking to it and the success is evident - unfortunately their success means the likes of HQ dont really have a chance, particularly when (arguably) the same cant be said of their business plan

PS - all three remaining HQ 75's currently parked as the east end of the US terminal next to the AC hangar at YVR.

I wonder if the 75's will become Globespans needed aircraft as they have already some rearranged seating. We will see.

Ho hum. There's hardly a huge gap to be filled by the departure of Harmony. And it looks like they're still abandoning HNL for the summer.

That would be a great home for these three 75's. Flyglobespan would use them well.

It doesn't matter how huge the gap is. A gap is a gap.

To bad about harmony, but it is good for WS. Nice to see more WS tails at YVR.
As long as the number of take-offs equals the number of landings...you're doing fine.

Agree, that "small gap" will be p/u by AC & WS even without extra metal......but hey WS need a good reason to justify extra metal.....  Wink

Cheers,

That WestJet press release was so bogus!

The flights to LAS and YYZ were announced back in February, well before the demise of HQ.

Also, WS already had plans to re-instate the daily flights to HNL and OGG, again, well before the demise of HQ.

"...to fill the void left by the departure of Harmony Airways."

What a bunch of crap!

Perhaps, but does the majority of the general public know this? Just another great PR move by the folks over at Westjet. They seize these opportunities and make the most possible out of them.

I wonder if they'd ever consider a trans-atlantic hub at St. Johns Newfoundland. I imagine they could do quite well flying 737's accross the pond and increase aircraft utilization even more as well as yields.
