VS Arrives To ORD 4/23/2007

Mon Apr 23, 2007 6:30 am

VS is supposed to start it's Chicago service on the 23rd of April. I am off Monday so will any spotters be on hand to take pics of the plane coming in? Or is anyone on the inaugural flights on Monday?

It is going to be nice seeing that beautiful livery here and another carrier to ORD. I was just over to T5 I did not get a chance to see a VS counter. What side of T5 will the ticket counters be on? South Departures maybe?(Which is BA's side hehehehehehehe)

Also is VS handling their own ground staff here or is another company doing it on their behalf?

very nice that VS will be back in ORD, I am just asking me if they can compete with only 1 daily flight on the route?

cheers

Have they been there before? When? Know why they pulled out?

I'm thinking the exact same thing. BA and AA together have what, 6 daily flights or something (and both conveniently in OW). One daily from VS is hardly attractive for the high-yields who need the flexibility AA and BA can offer.

However, I think VS already has interline agreements with BA on other Transatlantic routes (correct me if I'm wrong), so technically the low frequency of VS should not be a problem for the J-pax who pay full J fare. However, for the rest it would still be an issue, probably. But I'm sure they've assessed this issue at VS and still found it worthy to try out.

I guess VS is testing this now to see if it works; if succesful they can upgrade to a 346 and maybe an additional frequency if they can obtain the slots at ORD (btw talk about a slot constrained route, ORD-LHR!!).

Good luck to VS on "The High Riser"!!

VS flew LHR-ORD-LHR from 1999 to 2001. The route performed very poorly and was axed. VS could not compete with AA, BA, and UA in the market. It also axed the short lived LHR-YYZ route around that time as well. When VS flew the route, it operated an A340-300.

...they pulled out right after 9/11....served the route for about a year or so...it was basically with their B747-200 (rarely with the A343, which they will be doing now)..

I flew VS JFK-LHR-JFK in 1999 and loved their service, but when I flew ORD-LHR-ORD back in 2001 (few months before the route was pulled), it as to be probably the worst service I've ever experienced.....

the F/A's were some of the rudest F/A's I've ever dealt with..they made the occassional AA battle-axe F/A's look like angels....

.....the flight on both ends were full though..

....personally, ORD is a route where VS should have had an A330 with...this is one disadvantage I see VS having..

Quoting Kevin777 (Reply 2):

8 during summer (5xAA & 3XBA) and 7 during the winter (4XAA and 3XBA)...but who's counting... Wink

dont forget, UA has 3x/daily flights also...

Yea VS has AA's 4 daily, BA's 3 daily, and UA's 2-3 daily. I haven't worked in T5 in over a year but when I was there you also had AI stopiing in LHR on some days before continuing to Mumbai I think it was.

But I love that livery on the 346 of theirs! I hope they use it. IB should be back on the 346 since they have now moved back to the K concourse.

Actually, VS flew LGW-YYZ and not LHR-YYZ.

Still, I'm glad to see VS back at ORD. I flew them once back in 2001 on LHR-ORD (before the 5 1/2 year hiatus), and despite the fact that the plane was one of the ex-NZ 742s, it was actually a rather pleasant flight... and the food was actually the best airline food I ever had.

Obviously not........

This route didn't work then and it won't work this time either. It is an over saturated route as is, we don't need another carrier flying it. Essentially, same thing that happened to UA in the NYC area to LHR route will happen here to VS....too many airlines flying the same route. I mean, UA and AA have the advantage of having ORD as a hub meaning, LOTS OF CONNECTING pax. VS will not have that luxury so I doubt this route will be around for that long.

And after much speculation, WSJ reports that........

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. has agreed to purchase as many as 24 of Boeing Co.'s 787 Dreamliners, according to people close to the matter, as part of a larger strategy to keep the airline competitive on Atlantic routes while addressing concerns about greenhouse-gas emissions.

The deal would be worth as much as $3.6 billion at list prices, though customers typically negotiate discounts on large purchases. The orders, expected to be announced in Chicago this morning, were previously booked on Boeing's Web site, but it didn't identify the buyer.

They don't seem to have a problem with BA/AA's multiple frequencies from JFK, not to mention other carriers on the NY/LON route, why would ORD be a problem?

Because the market for New York is much larger than Chicago. VS have 6 daily flights to New York...plus the 3 dailys codeshared with Continental Airlines which is great flexibility for business passengers. With 1 flight a day to ORD, this doesn't give business passengers any flexibility, hence why they use AA/BA or UA.

...maybe this has something do to with it... Wink
