Norwegian Air Shuttle : A320 Or 738?

Fri May 04, 2007 8:24 pm

I was told yesterday , Norwegian Air Shuttle has begunn talks with Both A and B , about fleet renewal , to replace their 20 (or more) 733s .
Decision will be made at yearend or beginning of the next one.
The winner will be this , with lower prices.

because the 733 is smaller, I think they might end up with A-319s which seems pretty popular with European LCCs (easyJet, Germanwings), or 73Gs instead.

Nope, all sourced secondhand. Norwegian used to be known as Noewegian Air Shuttle and operated Fokker 50's They had a very close association with Braatheens, before teh SAS purchase. But did wirdroe took over any prop function of SAS in Norway. Leaving NAS in the cold.

They started out with a mixed fleet of -500 and -300 IIRC, but quickly standardised on the -300. They seem to be doing OK, from what I can see.

I agree. I dont think they would do a 156 seat layout though, well, I hope! 73G would also be a good alternitive. Ex EZY, perhaps?

I think they will at least receive some B737-800 later this year. I do'nt know whether this is because they need more aircrafts or if it is their new aircraft type in the future.

Cant help but think the 737-700 would be ideal for them. Not sure that they would get too much benefit from winglets given the length of sectors they fly, but they may go for them nonetheless.
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

Oh I'm not sure - Norway to the likes of Istanbul, Varna, Bourgas, Faro, Malaga, Mercia, Crete, etc are long enough to get some benefit from winglets I would have thought. and if they add some more holiday, charter type destinations in the Med then it would make more sense.

I think they want to add Las Palmas too when they receive the right equipment.

Istanbul and Moscow will be new destinations added from Oslo later this year  Smile

In that case winglets make perfect sense.  Smile

If they are talking with Airbus and Boeing, then I think they are getting them first hand. Hope they go for the A319, but my gut feeling is for the 73G or the 738 due to the smooth transition for the pilots. However, if Airbus has lower prices, then airbus will win this deal.

I can see 20-25 orders, then maybe a few more in a couple of months/years.

Maybe they will get some new planes for FlyNordic  Yeah sure  idea

Almost certainly they will do a joint order and get rid of the MDs to allow complete commonality across the two brands.

If this is true, then they will most probably get more than 20-25 planes. More they buy, the sweeter deal they get, right?

I thought Norwegian leased their aircraft. While I know they're doing well operationally I didn't think they had the financial muscle, or will, to make such a big purchase.

DY currently has 22 733s (2 are their own and the rest is leased). In addition they are leasing two MDs for the summer-season because the deal to acquire two ex Fisher Air 733s fell through. It is rumoured that they will get two 738s and 2 733s this fall.

The plan with the FlyNordic MDs is to let them go when the current leasing-agreement runs out. They will then go for fleet commonality between Norwegian and FlyNordic.

A deal for a fleet-renewal is coming (but don´t expect it in the next month or two  Smile ). Whether it will be A or B will all be down to who offers the best deal, although i have a feeling it will be Boeing if the offers are pretty close. I think it will be mainly 73G/319 but perhaps with a couple of 738/320. Some routes have a good enough load to support the larger plane. Winglets makes sense. There are already many Mediterranean destinations, and as Vadheim says there will probably be destinations on the Canaries (and maybe in north African too) when they get the necessary equipment.

What about 737-700s from EasyJet? Are they supposed to be phased out in the near future?

Congratulations Norwegian and Boeing!!!! This will help Norwegian expand their rout network, and perhaps eventually replace their older 737-300. Time for a new livery?? It will be interesting to see how the Norwegian saga evolves. Does anybody know which leasing company Norwegian will get their planes from?

No word from Boeing's press department yet, but if you look closely on the picture provided above it clearly shows an 73G as well. And that image looks like something from the Boeing press department...

Thank you for an update Someone83. Do you have a link to that news article? It would be very interesting to read. Does the three used one enter here first, and are all 11 leased from the same company?

This is great news (although i have to admit i would have preferred Airbuses  Smile ). An interesting point though. It seem like they will get more planes later this year. They are opening the new routes in October, but the delivery of the new planes don´t start until next year. Dy´s current fleet don´t have the range for those routes.

Maybe the deal includes an option for 73Gs as well. I don´t think a fleet-renewal will consist of 738s, as these would be to big for many of the routes.

Quoting OHLHD (Reply 20):

There is one or two more coming (Erik Bye will be on one). The problem is that it is difficult to find suitable persons, and getting the necessary rights to use them on the planes.

When this thread first started I wondered how much influence Finnair would have in this purchase, but it seems like Kjos is still running the game

I believe that is correct. The Newspaper Aftenposten said that their fleet would consist of 33 planes from 2011. That would mean we can expect a continued rapid expansion of Norwegian in the years to come.

I don´t think the new ties with AY will make much difference. The main change i think will be routes to HEL from DY´s bases (except OSL) which connects well with AY´s flights to Asia.

With FlyNordic and the Polish base it's time for a new livery and a new name. It was weird walking around Dublin last year watching double decker buses drive around advertising a DUB - WAW route on DY aircraft.

I've never been a fan of the DY livery. It somehow looks half finished, the tails are ok, but the rest is poor.

The nickname for DY's livery is "Spent tampon" so they don't really flatter themself by using the current livery.

I have been wondering the same thing. Some of the planes will be used for charter fligths. Maybe they'll offer a better inflight service to charter operators?
