Kenya Airways 737-800 Lost

Sat May 05, 2007 3:27 pm

From AP Wires--

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- Kenya Airways said Saturday it has lost contact with a 737-800 aircraft that took off from Cameroon.

''The last message from the aircraft was received by the control tower in Douala immediately after take-off,'' Kenya Airways said on its Web site.

The flight departed Douala at 12:05 a.m. and was to arrive in Nairobi at 6:15 a.m.

The airline said it opened a crisis management center near the airport and had no further details. It did not say how many passengers were on board.

The announcement was signed by Michael Okwiri, of Kenya Airways corporate communications.

Doesn't sound good at all, but I'll entertain the hope that they managed to land safely somewhere. Fingers crossed for all onboard.

It doesn't sound good. Brand new B737-800, with 109 on board, just gone in the night. Everyone at KQ in NBO is deeply worried.

Jeez...just as everything was going well for KQ now this, remember they lost an A310 in Ivory Coast in 2000.

Quote:

Jan 31, 2000 A Kenya Airways Airbus A310 jet carrying 169 passengers and 10 crew members crashed into the sea Sunday night, shortly after takeoff from Abidjan. The flight originated in Nairobi and was meant to stop over in Lagos but flew directly to Abidjan because of weather conditions over Lagos. Harmattan winds coming down from the Sahara to the north had made skies over Lagos unusually hazy on Sunday and the airport stopped incoming flights. After a three-hour layover, the Kenya Airways Flight 431 took off at 9:08 p.m. and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the Ivory Coast one minute later. Authorities have declined to comment on whether the plane's engines could have been affected by dust and sand.

It's been 8 hours since takeoff, I would doubt it is still airborne. Hopefully it landed somewhere safely. If it did crash, I hope the maximum amount of passengers survived.

737-800 reported, though I show this flight operates as a 767-300 in our system, normally.

Hoping for the best.

9 crew seems more along the lines of a 767, perhaps the 738 is being mis-reported.

Being quite often in DLA, it's usually a 738 that operates this rotation.

I hope all is good... Radio communication can be a problem above that zone but still it's very worrying.

According to Amadeus flight info the flight was over 1 hour late from DOUALA
due to heavy rain impeding take offs and according to Amadeus shows a 767 but could have been
with a 738 with the low load

Fingers crossed!

According to BBC it is lost over the Congo

Me too. It is understandably under a lot of pressure. At a Press Conference held a short time ago, the Daily Nation reported as follows:
http://www.nationmedia.com/dailynati...ry.asp?category_id=1&newsid=97449. "KA chief executive Titus Naikuni told a Press conference in Nairobi that they lost contact with the Boeing 737-800 passenger plane on its way to Nairobi from Douala in Cameroon. The plane was carrying 106 passengers and nine crew, Mr Naikuni said. "We have no details at the moment as to what happened to our aircraft," Naikuni told journalists.
Earlier, the company said the control tower in Douala had received the last message from the aircraft immediately after takeoff. The plane had been due to land in the Kenyan capital at 6:15am (0315 GMT). The company said it had set up a crisis centre to monitor events and a passenger information centre at Panari and Intercontinental hotels in Nairobi."

"The airline has set up crisis telephone numbers to help relatives and friends of the passengers get information. The numbers are +254 20 3200535/4, +254 20 3274349 in Nairobi and +27 11 2071100 in South Africa. We should know more then." http://www.nationmedia.com/dailynati...ry.asp?category_id=1&newsid=97449.

I read "eight crew and a flight engineer" on Spiegel online. "Flight engineer"? Like the third man in the cockpit or another sort of engineer?

Anyway, no communication and no sign of the aircraft. Logical conclusion: A crash so bad that the radio doesn't work any longer. Some of the route goes over the rain forests of Congo, I believe they are hard to access. Looks very bad, one can only hope for a miracle.

Eight hours and still no confirmation of where it was lost??? Takes off from Douala should have been a 4 hr flight, and last contact with Douala Tower, so where was the aicraft last seen on radar?

KQ usually has an engineer on most of their flights into African destinations in case they need to do some trouble shooting during the turn-around. Not a FE in the traditional sense (3rd man in cockpit)

Hi!

I was trying to find any news related in any african newspapers, including cameroon and ivory cost ones but I couldn't find. In french newspaper Le Figaro they give just a short note. Unfortunetly we should expect the worst and for me it's quite sad comming from an airline like Kenya Airways, quite a good example of sucess with a modern fleet, and a brand new airplane with around 6 months old each of them, that's just too bad to be true!

This is the route ABJ-YAO-NBO

Clearly goes over the northern part of the "DR" Congo. Very remote place, makes a rescue very difficult.

Contact was lost soon after take-off, so the Congo forest probably not an issue.

It makes sense that all that has happened, occurred during the night hence so search and rescue activities. As the day progresses we will hear of more news. Runway 30 was probably the active runway, taking off towards the ocean.

Hi!

Looking to the route that Thorben kindly put here, and taking in mind the words of LAXspotter I must agree that if the contact was lost shortly after take-off then the sea would be the first place to search...that's amazing, back to 2000, the KQ 313 also crashed in the sea shortly after take-off from Abidjan....terrible coincidence!!!

The ELT is the Emergency Locater Transmitter. It automatically activates after a severe impact. Typically, it is located in the tail region of the aircraft.

Its automatic activation is not a good sign.

At the moment the media worldover just say it has gone missing. No confirmed reports of any crash... although many say it must have crashed in the congo...
