According to pilots on another forum-the aircraft had to do 3 missed approaches due to the weather

Could this be a double flame out due to the torrential rain?

Hi!

I was just watching the news on AL Jahzeera channel and they say that it looks that the plane crashed in Niete and the major concern now is how to get there, Cameroon Air Force is quit small and even beeing close to the border with Equatorial Guinea, also with a very tinny little air force ( if they even have it...), so it's going to be a huge task to rescue people if there are any alive!

Very sad indeed. Was this A/C normally on this route?? In my system it says that its normally a 767 on a Friday night?? Maybe they change A/C according to loads.

Shame to see such a new A/C go down and most proberbly loss of life.

At the moment the media worldover just say it has gone missing. No confirmed reports of any crash... although many say it must have crashed in the congo...

An Aviation Official has confirmed that the Kenya Airways 737-8AL 5Y-KYA has in fact crashed in Niete, Southern Cameroon at around 6am UK time. The KQ CEO was on the news a few minutes ago, hesitating to come to terms with the fact that this has happened.

I hope all is well with pax & crew.

Plane is confirmed to have crashed by French Radio. It crashed in southern Cameroon. There were huge thunderstorms in the area at the time of KQ's take-off.

Very sad. Let's keep fingers crossed and pray for all of them.

Are they indicating that the radar blip is gone?

Quoting LAXspotter (Reply 22):
so where was the aicraft last seen on radar?

What radar - this is sub Saharan AFRICA. According to the latest info and charts issued by AIS-ASECNA all ATC en route over Cameroon is procedural. The nearest radar cover is at Abidjan - look at an atlas - and that is operated on a trial basis.

Perhaps this and the Adam Air accident in Indonesia will go some way to convincing authorities and airlines in the more remote areas of the world of the value of ADS-B which, compared to radar, is cheap, totally efficient and cheap to relay over long distances.

As to the accident, if this is a case of flying into a major storm system, in the words of Pete Seeger "when will they ever learn, oh when will they ever learn"

It had "just" left Douala. It crashed, according to the East African Standard,

He is expected to address a press conference shortly. The airline has sent a team to Cameroon and set up crisis centres in Nairobi, where the public can get more information.

This is very bad news for families of those involved, KQ and the reputation of aviation in Africa.

If it had happened in Nigeria, the aviation minister would be on National television now blaming the pilot or the airline. Fortunately there seemed to be a more controlled media approach here. Hope there are survivors, although chances do not sound good.

This is very, very sad, especially for KQ. Several of those who died in the crash A319 crash were involved with a development organization my parents worked for, so I knew some of the those involved, and also the results of the crash and the impact on the survivors is terrible. It's so sad to see also that in Western countries the minute a plane goes down, lots of assumptions are made and information is plentiful, Africa however is different and information is very klimited often.

Heavy rains & thunderstorms in Douala yesterday evening.
Probably slightly modify routing (read course) to avoid too bad weather areas.
No definite site location up to now as the aircraft has not yet been located.

Well the news stations are all reporting on the deadly Kansas tornadoes, but they did just say 106 people on board the Boeing 737 aircraft. Wish we could get some conformations- this really sucks for Kenya Airways. They just got these new 738s and 777s and have really started to bring up their standards. I think they really were the Pride of Africa and i hope this doesn't damage their future, but i don't know. Just they other day I was talking with a group of people who want to go on a mission trip to Africa, and as we were talking, I made the comment about how there aren't many African carriers on which I would fly on. I specifically thought about Kenya Airways and how they seemed to be doing a nice job. Now I just don't know, because it's true that crashes happen, and if AA were to have a crash i would still fly with them. Not to say that this one thing would keep me off Kenya Airways because I know accidents happen, but I sure would think twice. Well I hope things work out for them but it really doesn't look good. Maybe they can stick it out in the long run. My prayers are with the passengers and crew.
