UAL LAX 747 Routes

Mon May 07, 2007 7:26 am

Does anyone know how many 747 flights come out of LAX for United? What cities do they fly?

NRT and SYD for sure. I don't think they have any domestic flights running right now.

I should know that, but the last 3 times I have taken LAX-LHR via UA have been on 744's. All were scheduled.

How many 747's does UA have flying right now? Are there any still parked in the desert? I know there are enough routes they need them for...any chance of seeing them being rotated in and out of domestic service this summer?

If you see that, its usually a last minute plane change. Either due to over booking of flights or one repositioning. I know sometimes they will run a daily ORD-SFO or ORD-LAX for a couple weeks usually occurs when one is down and they need to share one in Europe and the Pacific. It will most likely be ORD-SFO or ORD-DEN this summer, I believe they have even pulled a lot of the 777's out of LAX. Id say download UA Timetable off their website, and check it periodically, sometimes the change doesnt happen untill you get to the gate...

United currently operates a less than daily schedule from each San Francisco and Chicago utilizing B777-222ER equipment. United, due to equipment needs and scheduling a la the recently announced Los Angeles service, will suspend, temporarily, UA828/829 - Hong Kong to Chicago/Chicago to Hong Kong and UA856/867 Hong Kong to San Francisco/San Francisco to Hong Kong which operate alternating days of the week.

Overall, the equipment/scheduling change allows the Los Angeles hub to play more of role in the Company's Asian network and allows for around 37% more seats United States to/from Hong Kong, which moves the network forward with set goals.

Was that quite a while back, I fly LAX quite a lot and always get the 777, which of course, UA have used on this route for years.

So they are canceling SFO-HKG and ORD-HKG in favor of LAX-HKG... What about the HKG-SIN and HKG-SGN flights? Where will those come from?

They are cancelling some SFO/ORD service. Both SFO and ORD recieve a second flight a few days of the week. They are the flights that will be axed. SFO/ORD will maintain 1-daily

Currently SFO-HKG is 10 weekly, will go 7 weekly which is to bad

For now, just 2 scheduled--NRT and SYD. When HKG starts, that will make 3. However, repositioning flights to DEN, ORD, and/or IAD are occassionally 747s at various times of the year, but not right now.

Boy, it would be an understatement to say what a difference a few more 747's and 777's would make to UA.

LAX to Hong Kong ca't be flown by United 777-200ER fleet. Other versions of the 777 yes but UA's no. UA's 777 don't have enough range to make HKG from LAX. Later versions of the 772ER with higher thrust engines like Continental's can but UA'a are capable of about 13 hour flights only. With Cathay operating 3 744 daily, there really is only one plane to fly the route for UA, a 744.

UA today operates ORD-HKG with a 777, which is approx 500nm further then LAX-HKG.

Will LAX get the additional flight to SYD during the Dec-Apr period? Where do they find the spare aircraft for this flight?

UA's 777ER's do ORD/HKG 3 times a week right now without issues, but can't carry much cargo. Full passenger/bag loads however are fine.

Others have pointed out that this is incorrect. But, could a 777-ER (one of United's) even do this route? I did it on UA years back in a 744 when they still had the service and if memory serves it was 15+ hours - nearly as long as LAX-SYD.

There is no question that United is reaching the point where additional 744s or 777ERs are going to have to be added if they are to continue to grow the international route map. There are NO more UA 744's in the desert, but there are a couple of ex-UA , ex-Varig 777ER's back in the US that could probably be picked up really cheap!!!

I flew UA LAX/HKG rt in 1994 shortly after UA's -400's were delivered. It was 15:30 wb and 12:30 eb (in December). Was in Business both ways. As I recall, wb was not full, but eb was full. Both flights were great as far as inflight was concerned. WB was daylight almost the whole way - very disconcerting. Arrival in HKG was around 8 pm which was great - went right to bed! I think UA had about 2-3 -400's at the time (old colors). Of course, one of the beauties was Kai-Tak. HKG will never seem the same with Kai-Tak.

Interestingly on return, UA's -400 from SIN via HKG to SFO pulled up beside us on departure from HKG. They let pax walk from one a/c to the other without even nearing the terminal. Strangely, we were connecting in LAX to SFO, but the n/s to SFO was sold out necessitating routing through LAX. Great trip in those days with UA, LAX, Kai-Tak. The only other time I'd been in HKG was PA SIN/HKG/SFO with a change from a -100 to an SP in HKG (in F - a chance of a lifetime. I've never regretting upgrading)! I've never experienced the new HKG - Kai-Tak to me is Hong Kong!

Last summer UA yanked the usual summer peak LAX-IAD 744 from the schedule but there were some occasionally scheduled LAX-ORD 744 flights, usually the overnight.

Isn't United downgradin a lot of its inter Asia flights to b767's? Maybe this is how they are getting more widebodies.
What is it? It's A 747-400, but that's not important right now.
