AA At PVD

Mon May 07, 2007 10:19 am

It seems like everytime I travel on AA from ORD to PVD the flight is always packed. Obviously that's not a great indicator of overall average load factor and I know that, however, IIRC AA used operate the route using MD80s and then switched to RJ's, that's a heck of a step down. Were the load factors really that pitiful?

AA's loads were fine at PVD with mainline, prior to their exit they had even had 5x ORD 1x DFW then within 12 mos they went to 3x ERD which is extremely excessive IMHO and leads me to believe that the downgrade was more of a payroll gouge with the station downgrade than a true demand indicator.

From what i understand, the call-back clause was something like 12 mos, and i belive AA could if they wanted to have a mainline flight from the now contract station. Id sure like to see DFW return.

I had also heard that AA had some problems with the contract station at PVD with numerous complaints from Frequent Fliers and had gotten attention from high level AA management.

Id like to see another ORD ERJ and also 1-2x DFW on mainline. I believe PVD-DFW was doing good, but they needed to get rid of the station costs.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

PVD was also likely an indirect casualty of the departure of the F100 from the fleet, not because they had seen exclusively F100s (they hadn't) or because the loss of mainline correlated with the F100s being retired (it didn't) but because the retirement of the F100s caused the reallocation of ERJ, CR7, and S80 capacity.

NW has similarly adjusted a lot of stations after the retirement of the Avros. For example, OKC was a huge Avro station before their retirement and now has a lone DC-9 among 6 CRJs.

Me too. Their situation at PVD right now is pitiful. They have the worst times ever, so its almost impossible for a convenient connection time. They should just bring back mainline.

They need to increase frequency if anything.
