HA Getting More 2nd Hand 767s?

Mon May 07, 2007 11:57 am

I heard from one of the employees of HA that they are getting more 2nd hand 767-300s. She stated that she heard it throught the grape vine. How true is this tumor? Where will HA put these aircrafts? Is it true that the ex-DL planes are currently used for SAN, SFO and Sacramento flights only? Where do these ex-DL planes go for maintenance? I though HA has their 767-300s serviced in LAX?

Mahalo for any information.

There's always rumors. The latest is that we're negotiating with United for four of their 767-300's. Of course, as with any rumor, I'll wait until I see the plane on the ramp in our colors before I believe it. I do know that management wants us to expand, but it's a question as to how much they are willing to spend to do it.

The ex-DL planes are used mostly for the bay area & LAX flights, but I think they've gone everywhere except PHX, ANC, and the south Pacific (PPT, PPG, SYD). They do end up with payload/fuel problems if the flight is too long, which is why we don't often see them in LAS, PDX, or SEA. Routine maintenance is done in HNL and LAX, and heavy checks are done in Everett Washington (which is why you see them occasionally in SEA).

I would be surprised if UAL would give up any 767-300ER's since they supposedly don't have enough and they do not have any non ER's.

So where does HA's management intends to expand? Chicago, DC, New York?

As HAL said earlier, the heavy checks are done by Goodrich in WA as well as the ETOPs conversions. I would like to add that regular maintenance is done at every city that HAL operates at. DL does mtc at LAX, SFO, SEA and LAS. I think that's it for dl. SAN, PHX and PDX used to handle Hawaiian but that was before the brain fart idea of closing down those dl mtc stations.

Cheers.

This is sort of off the subject of the thread, but How does HA make revenue with having that spare plane sit at HNL?

Hawaiian has their own mechanics in PDX now.

It doesn't. However, the spare under goes maintenance while it sits at HNL so that down time for unscheduled maintenance is reduced, which then keeps the aircraft on time and reduces the need to compensate for delays.

HAL is currently in talks with NZ, about NZ doing the maintenance. If NZ win the contract then HA would need to work out a way to get them to AKL, most likly way I can see is HA operating scheduled HNL-AKL flights, maybe taking over NZs flights or operarting alongside NZ

I don't think that makes much sense. The HA B-767-300s are non-ERs, so flying B-767-300s there on revenue flights would be a little outside of their range. HA could deadhead the aircraft there and make it.

That would be a very cheap way to increase the range of the B-767-300 by about 7%-8%. So, it would make sense to do it.

Only the 4 ex-DL aircraft are non-ER 767s. Aircrafts 580-593 (14 of them) are ER 767s.

Could PDX support a second daily flight to Honolulu?

The latest version I've heard is that we will operate a normal flight HNL-PPG (Pago Pago, Am. Samoa), then ferry the plane empty from there to AKL. Whatever plane was in AKL would then be ferried the next day back to PPG to return in revenue service back to HNL.

I'd love to see us operate direct HNL-AKL, but we just don't have enough aircraft for that.

To all those people in the know.. If HA had enough aircraft do you think we'd see an expansion of Australia services? I'd really like to see HA commence services to BNE (or MEL) and increase SYD, but it doesn't look like that will be happening anytime soon  Sad

AKL would also make a great addition...
