Airbus A380 - SQ Painting Completed.

Thu May 10, 2007 5:00 pm

Singapore Airlines have released the first pictures of the A380 in its livery.

Congratulations to Airbus on this wonderful acheivemnt and yet another milestone into the entry into service of the first A380 (MSN 003)  Smile

Some extra good news for the A380 program.  Smile

http://210.193.52.109/staging/A380/news_pr_20070509.html

With its distinctive blue and yellow logo, and the name 'Singapore Airlines' stretched across 33 metres of aircraft fuselage, the world's first commercial A380 aircraft (MSN003) rolled out of the paint hangar in Hamburg, Germany this week. The installation of the aircraft cabin was completed at the A380 final assembly line in Hamburg in March, while testing of the newly installed systems was conducted in early April.

Some 100 painters worked over four shifts polishing the 3,100m2 surface area of the aircraft fuselage by hand, and with extraordinary precision. This painting process took 21 days.

Following this, the aircraft will undergo more system analysis on the ground before its cabin systems are tested in flight this summer.

The subsequent A380s for Singapore Airlines, MSN005, MSN006 and MSN008 are also in Hamburg and are on track according to the production schedule. In fact, MSN008 is even ahead of schedule, having arrived in Hamburg two weeks earlier than planned.

MSN005 is currently undergoing electrical harness installation. This will be followed by systems testing in the summer and cabin furnishing.

Singapore Airlines is on schedule to take delivery of the first ever commercial A380 in October 2007, and will be the First to Fly the superjumbo aircraft.

Lovely looking AC. Looks like things are back on track and hope to see EIS in Fall this year.

Welcome to the return issue of the Singapore Airlines A380 eNewsletter.

In this issue, we are pleased to announce the completion of the paintwork for the first Singapore Airlines A380. This follows the timely completion of the aircraft's cabin installation.

In the past few months, journalists from around the world had the opportunity to participate in test flights on the A380. They describe, in their own words, the unique experience of travelling on the superjumbo aircraft. Their reactions suggest that the Singapore Airlines A380 experience will also draw positive reviews when it launches later this year.

The media Gallery also has a new look - it is now easier than ever to navigate through and view photos and videos of the Singapore Airlines A380.

We hope you enjoy the updates that come with this edition of the Singapore Airlines A380 eNewsletter. In the coming months, we look forward to bringing you more information and insights into the much-anticipated arrival of the Singapore Airlines A380.

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours Sincerely,

The Singapore Airlines A380 Team

Nice to see some good news from this troubled program. That brings back the question - what are they going to do between now and October?

First of all put some engines on the thing!

Then there will be extensive testing of the plane and IIRC lots of proving flights with SQ staff so the plane hits the ground (or the air!) running.

Yeah I think they may bring it back when they launch or maybe they have just shelved it . I did like the double windows logo though so maybe they can use it with another phrase.

Thanks Wings!

I wonder what your opinion is about the fact that some of the windows between Door 1 and Door 2 are absent on Main Deck. According to many people on this forum, this should be the place where F/C cabin is located... the absence of windows leaves a few interesting options open actually...

Among those, if F/C would be like the one on the newest 77W then there would be no need for such measurement. If not, then it might mean that something like a partition might end up very close to the window panel... just free thinking...

Opinions?

No, I believe it's where the "conjugal" suites are to be located...

But onto serious matters. It's nice to see that there is a firm EIS for the 380, even though we've heard it before. Until it's actually delivered to SIA, I'll remain somewhat skeptical...

Those missing windows could be a shower and extra large bathroom. Its really intriguing and I cant wait to see whats behind those missing windows. My A380 SQ model has no missing windows as do all my pics of the SQ A380!!! This makes me think its one of their innovations. It could be a lounge but then I think they would have had windows or it could be a staffed bar but then there would have to be a partition to avoid disrupting fellow passengers.

SQ want a common type specific base wage between the 330/340/777/380.

The total pay is a type specific base wage plus an type specific hourly rate plus an assortment of allowances.

Presently the 744 currently has a slightly higher base wage than the 340/777 (which are the same), the type specific hourly rate between types is the same.

Its been the courts and the press as we speak, SQ want it at the same level as the 340/777, the SQ pilots want it above the 744.

As I opened my email and saw SQ's A380 newsletter with the images, I was very happy with the news.... I love the A380 and SQ's c/s looks fantastic on it... I also think that SQ has used the space very well to put their name across the airplane... of course it is nearly identical to the sticker c/s that was shown before but is nice to finally see the first actual color scheme on a A380. I am eagerly waiting to see the unveiling of the interior cabin and as I have said before, they will have a few big surprises, specially as their F cabin will not be the same as on their B77Ws like some were saying.

Congrats to SQ for getting the first superjumbo! I'm sure they'll love it as well as many pax!

The window placement between Doors 1 and 2 looks to be designed for four private suite cabins. Assuming SQ goes four across, that would allow sixteen private cabins. If SQ uses their 773ER suite as the base - probably with some type of ottoman for two to dine together or hold a meeting ala AA's Flagship Suite and others, this would give SQ a consistent 50% First Class seat boost from the 773ER to the 744 to the A388 and once all the 747s are gone, a common experience between the 773ER and A388, just with some extra privacy and features for the A388.

Robert

It does not sound as if they were in a huge hurry, but yes....it's normal, even if the manpower and the hand polishing seems....well....excessive. The prep work is the most time consuming part of painting an airplane, even if it is a new one. It has to be masked, cleaned, primed, allowed to harden, sanded, cleaned again to remove dust, masked again, top coated, allowed to harden, inspected, any repaint necessary applied, allowed to harden, and then the livery is applied.

It is a lot of work.

One quick question concerning the livery painting. On the last photo posted, why is the letter "O" in Singapore bigger than the other letters? It looks like the top of the "O" extends higher than the rest of the letters.

I would hope - heck, I would expect - SQ and any other carrier with a true First Class product in the front of the main deck will have the stairs to the second deck aft of Door 2, regardless of what Airbus shows on their seating diagrams.

N276AASTT,

Generally in graphic design rounded letters like the "O" are slightly larger or, if you prefer, go a bit above the line. This is simply the result of optical adjustments to make those letter look as large as the squared ones.

Stitch,

Mmm an interesting consideration. I would though imagine that opening such a big hole in the deck after door 2 level would maybe require some major structural adjustments that could result in a too extreme customization level for Airbus.

Furthermore, I imagine it should be better to loose space where the plane has an accentuated conic shape instead of where the plane section is at its widest. I am not aware of any airline having the staircase moved at the back. Beside, in those areas, as far as I know, there are some galleys, which then should be moved somewhere else. I think many airlines would prefer a staircase close by first class, which they can decorate nicely, more then a galley, on which is more difficult to achieve a First Class look (without speaking of smells and noise).

What do you people think?

I would hope - heck, I would expect - SQ and any other carrier with a true First Class product in the front of the main deck will have the stairs to the second deck aft of Door 2, regardless of what Airbus shows on their seating diagrams.

Maybe it will be like other airlines have on their 747's. NZ have Premium Y upstairs along with a few rows of J and Premium Y passengers have to go through J to get anywhere on the main deck.

I agree with you that it makes sense to keep the stairs in the nose, but unless every plane boards and deplanes through Door 1L, you are going to have hundreds of people walking through First Class during boarding, and I can't see that being acceptable to FC passengers. Especially since folks are going to stop and gawk at all the amenities. Also, you'd have to secure the stairs during flight to keep people from upstairs coming down and walking through First Class to confer with folks in lower classes of service, lest they interrupt First Class passengers.

Unless the whole point of having private cabins in First Class is to "ensconce" the passengers in their own private cabins behind closed doors from the moment they board. If you include a mini-bar like EK does, they could serve themselves with pre-departure drinks and canapés while Deck Two moves through. Big grin

A wonderful achievement in the midst of all that could go wrong and that did go wrong, those wonderful Airbus heroes are making the first flight a reality.

Why exactly did this take 21 days to paint? I heard that a Boeing 777-300ER took only 3 days to paint. Also, Singapore's livery is one of the more easier liveries to paint, since it is only 3 colors (white, blue, and gold).
