EgyptAir Celebrates 75th Anniversary (+ News)

Sun May 13, 2007 12:30 am

This week the Egyptian national carrier, , celebrates its 75th anniversary. The carrier became the first airline in the Middle East and the seventh in the world when it was established on 7th May 1932 and started operations in July 1933 in association with the Airwork Company under the name Misr Airwork. The carrier's name changed to Misr Air in 1949, then United Arab Airlines during the union between Egypt and Syria. In 1971, the carrier became EgyptAir. A brief historical overview of the carrier is available here.

2007 is certainly shaping to be the one of the most successful years for the carrier as the airline continues to enhance and expand operations. A fitting commemoration for the airline's Silver Anniversary...

Highlights:

  • The annual report for 2005-2006 was published internally this month indicating that all 8 holding companies have registered strong profit growth. Though state owned, the airline receives no government financing. Following 9/11 the carrier posted losses of LE260million in 2001/2002 and LE247million in 2002/2003, however restructuring led to a return to profitability and a profit of LE302million was registered in 2003/2004, then LE429million in 2004/2005 and LE485million in 2005/2006. This is expected to increase to LE700million for the current 2006/2007 year. Furthermore the airline's revenue has trebled from LE3billion in 2002 to LE9billion in 2006. Due to the encouraging results the airline has awarded all long term employees a bonus this week for all their hard work and dedication. Note EgyptAir's financial year runs from July to June.

  • This summer sees a 21% increase in flights compared to the same period last year, as aircraft utilisation is improved and new aircraft arrive.

  • New flights will be launched to Guangzhou, Kuala Lumpur and Lisbon in June.

  • The airline will focus on expanding to new markets in the Middle East, Africa and Asia with key destinations in the US and Canada. The following 10 routes have been earmarked for expansion before 2010:

    • Warsaw (Poland)
    • Prague (Czech Republic)
    • Belgrade (Serbia)
    • Dar Al Salam (Tanzania)
    • Dakar (Senegal)
    • Lusaka (Zambia)
    • Washington (USA)
    • Chicago (USA)
    • Toronto (Canada)
    • Shanghai (China)

Expansion in the tightly regulated African market will be a key issue for EgyptAir to address at Regional Africa which takes place in Cairo between 27th-29th May.

  • The carrier will receive 2 more B737-800s in 2007 which are to be deployed on short and medium haul routes.

  • Plans to join Star Alliance are in full swing with the intention of gaining full membership. This week EgyptAir Chairman, Abdel-Hamid, stated that the airline "has achieved considerable progress negotiating with the German carrier (Lufthansa) to become a member of Star Alliance." The carrier already has agreements with several alliance airlines including LH, OS, SQ, LX, TK, TG, SA and TP. Alliance membership will certainly bring significant benefits to both the carrier and the organisation. It should also resolve current issues with AC with regards to MS serving YYZ and give BD access to CAI.

  • As a first step towards privatisation, the airline signed an agreement with Goldman Sachs in March for consultation on an IPO for 20% of the EgyptAir Holding Company. The IPO is expected to raise between $US900-1000million.

  • Proceeds of the IPO will be used to finance a 12 aircraft order for delivery before 2010. This will include an order for at least 7 A330s or B777s. The 3 A340-200s are expected to leave the fleet with the arrival of new widebodies.

  • A new subsidiary specialising in the use of small VIP passenger jets for corporate and personal air travel launches this year. The new 'Smart Aviation Company' will use 3 Cessna Citation jets with a capacity for 10 passengers.

  • Plans are in place to upgrade the interiors of the airline's fleet of B777s, including the introduction of lie-flat beds in the premium cabins.

  • In February the airline launched a new, albeit basic, website which for the first time allowed for online bookings and coincided with end of the 2 tier fare system the airline had been using.

  • Last Monday, on the airline's anniversary, the carrier signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Egyptian National Postal Authority allowing passengers to book their flight tickets at post offices around the country. The deal is the first of its kind in the Arab region and Africa.

  • The launch of EgyptAir Express to operate domestic and selected regional services from 01 June 2007. The new subsidiary will receive the first 2 brand new 76-seater Embraer 170s this week, followed by 2 more in July and 2 more in August. The subsidiary has a further 6 Embraers on option that are expected to be converted to firm orders by year end. The initial batch of pilots have already returned from their training in Switzerland.

"There has always been a need for a subsidiary within EgyptAir that focuses its operations on domestic flights more than any other routes," Mohammed Hassan (Chairman of EgyptAir Express) pointed out. He added, it would better serve passengers flying on domestic routes as it would offer them more convenient flying schedules. "The fleet will also absorb high demand on domestic routes that occurs during high seasons such as Christmas and New Year flights to the Red Sea as well as Umrah flights to Saudi Arabia during Ramadan." Launching EgyptAir Express is also essential for the national carrier to partner with the worldwide Star Alliance group, an objective of EgyptAir. "In order to join Star Alliance, carriers have to be predominant in their domestic markets. In EgyptAir's case, that stipulation cannot be met without having a fleet fully dedicated to serving domestic routes," Hassan stated. The initial schedule of the subsidiary is found here. The airline plans to launch flights to Taba (Sinai) and Marsa Alam (Red Sea) in October.

  • Charter subsidiary, Air Cairo, who currently operate 3 A320s will receive 2 more A320s this year (June and November). This summer will see the highest number of flights being operated since its launch.

  • The new Terminal 3 at Cairo Airport (the carrier's hub) will open and become fully operational in the first quarter of 2008, and the carrier will move all its operations to the brand new and advanced terminal as it initiates its strategy to transform operations to hub and spoke. EgyptAir Chairman, Abdel-Hamid, stated this week, "EgyptAir, as a potential Star Alliance member, will move with alliance members to operate from the new terminal. This will provide passengers and airlines with state-of- the art services and facilities,". Two of the gates at the new terminal will be equipped to handle the A380.

Kano: increases from 2 to 4x weekly services

Wow! I think ME is not going to like that. But seriously where are they going to get the traffic? 8U just pulled out of KAN due to the low loads and KLM is solely serving KAN for the cargo (as does ME, to cater for the large lebanese community in KAN).

Quoting Horus (Thread starter):
Expansion in the tightly regulated African market will be a key issue for EgyptAir to address at Regional Africa which takes place in Cairo between 27th-29th May.

This is a major problem and many African governments are dragging their feet on this issue. Many countries have signed on to the Yamassoukro Africna open skies agreement and yet those same governments are seriously frustrating expansion of many airlines (including all the major ones such as ET, KQ) accross the continent. Some serious political will is needed to solve this problem, which, I am afraid, is not going to happen at the conference you linked .

But great thread BTW, and nice to see MS doing fine.

Egyptair's story..

May 1932

EgyptAir is one of the pioneer airlines in the world, established in May 1932 to become the seventh carrier in the world.

August 1933

EgyptAir commenced commercial operation with Spartan cruiser from Cairo to Alexandria.

1935

A total of 12 De Havilland were added to the fleet.
During the Second World War, the Egyptian Government took over the airline and changed its name to Misr Airlines.

1946

The name was changed again to MisrAir and 10 Beach crafts were purchased adding the American technology to the fleet.

1949

MisrAir bought 10 Vickers Vikings and the following year put into service a French Aircraft, the Languedoc.

1956

MisrAir got merged with Syrian Airlines forming a new identity "United Arab Airlines-UAA".

1960

UAA enhanced the fleet with Comet 4-c jets becoming the first Carrier in the Middle East to use the jets.

1968

UAA introduced the Boeing 707-320c to cope with the growing international traffic and to operate longer routes.

1969

EgyptAir became the first Airline in the Middle East to fly Boeing 707s.

1971

MisrAir and Syrian Airlines split resulting in a new identity "EgyptAir".

July 2002

EgyptAir became a Holding Company with seven subsidiaries.

Great Thread!! Looks like Egypt Air is starting to expand pretty fast with those long haul routes to North America.

IAD and ORD haven't just been targeted due to the expected passenger/cargo demand but importantly to connect the carrier's hub to the East coast hubs of Star Alliance member, United.

As for YYZ, the airline has had problems gaining access to the airport since 2000 when discussions between MS's Canadian broker and AC broke down. The matter was taken to court and as a result discussions between the Egyptian and Canadian authorities has been suspended with regards to MS accessing YYZ until the ongoing court case is resolved. It's hoped that MS's application (and subsequent assimilation) to Star Alliance, which AC is a founding member of, will resolve the problem. In the mean time MS continue to operate a seasonal twice weekly CAI-YUL service.

Quoting Abrelosojos (Reply 2):
Congratulations MS. It truly is one of the pioneering airlines in the world.

It certainly has achieved several milestones. The restructuring programme launched in 2002 has bore fruit following years of stagnation.

Quoting Abrelosojos (Reply 2):

PS: I look forward to flying them after having done so on a 707 as a kid from NBO to CAI, circa 1988.

NBO has proved to be the carrier's strongest East African destination surpassing ADD. The current 5x weekly A320 services to the city are likely to increase to daily this winter (the carrier has the rights to do so).

Quoting KL577 (Reply 3):
Wow! I think ME is not going to like that. But seriously where are they going to get the traffic? 8U just pulled out of KAN due to the low loads and KLM is solely serving KAN for the cargo (as does ME, to cater for the large lebanese community in KAN).

At the start of this year's summer schedule (late March07) EgyptAir restructured East African services from just 4x weekly A330 triangle services linking CAI to LOS, ACC and KAN to operating non-stop B738 flights to each destination at higher frequencies. Kano went from 2x weekly A330s flights routing via LOS to 2x weekly non-stop B738 flights. Loads on West African services aren't high by any means however yields are strong. Furthermore with the carrier's application to join Star Alliance, the airline needs to strengthen its African presence.

The airline would like to operate to Kano with the following schedule from 29OCT07:

CAI KAN MS879 123---7 18:30/22:00 4hr30min 0 B738
KAN CAI MS880 1234--- 00:01/05:35 4hr34min 0 B738

Some serious political will is needed to solve this problem, which, I am afraid, is not going to happen at the conference you linked .

There is no quick solution to liberalising the African market for African carriers. Unfortunately bureaucracy, red tape and corruption are hindering efforts to improve air links within the continent. As for the Yamoussoukro Decision, well that is marred by the inactivity of many of the countries that signed up to it. On the issue of African liberalisation (or lack of), EgyptAir Chairman, Abdel-Hamid stated "It is a real problem, and I think that a region by region or country by country approach has more chance of succeeding, it is for this reason that we have come up with a new idea. In our initiative, the African Airlines Association is proposing to establish a 'Club of the Ready and Willing', interested airlines which are capable of convincing their governments and civil aviation authorities to open the sky to free movement of people and goods. I believe it will motivate those lagging behind."

Quoting Viasa (Reply 4):
Nice birthday present...

Delivery ceremony and delivery flights will take place on Monday 14th May 2007.

Quoting Horus (Thread starter):
The carrier already has agreements with several alliance airlines including LH, OS, SQ, LX, TK, TG, SA and TP

The agreement between EgyptAir and TAP Portugal was put into action today as the latter has now placed its codes (TP6070/6071) on MS's new CAI-LIS flights (MS755/756) which launches on 02JUN07. A Letter of Intent (LOI) towards 'a broad commercial co-operation agreement' between both carriers was signed on 01MAY07.

The new flights will initially be operated with A320s, and will be upgraded to the B738 this winter.

Quoting HECA (Reply 5):

Great thread Horus, thank you for the continueing extensive coverage of EgyptAir!

You're welcome HECA.

With regards to CAI-AMS, MS has yet to establish whether to increase flights on the route from the current 3x weekly A321 flights. As for KLM, they are planning to increase flights to CAI from 7 to 10x weekly flights (7x B777 and 3x B74E flights).

I've got the impression that the MS flights CAI-AMS are becoming more popular again, also amongst Egyptians living in The Netherlands. KLM always has done well, both O&D and connecting pax off course. And don't forget cargo. For myself, LX has stolen my heart years ago and I continue to use their flights via ZRH for my trips to CAI, as well as other places. Next one will be in six weeks! Already looking forward to fly those magnificant A343s of them again. LX has the best widebody service from Europe to CAI!
