United P.s. 757 Fleet

Thu May 17, 2007 10:40 am

I couldn't find this anywhere. Does anyone know how many dedicated birds UA has to the p.s. fleet? Also how often do these flights run?

Although this is a popular service, and no doubt brings in higher yields, I have to wonder how long they'll keep these aircraft in a fixed flying rotation. That in itself has to be expensive.

I don't think it brings in higher yields, infact I think it brings in lower yields, because when I had a look on the UAs web-site before booking the JFL-LAX flight, the price was the same as the non PS service on the route.

UA commands a high premium on the route. Its average fare is around $540 each way, compared to $390 for AA and $230 for DL. UA is probably generating more revenue on the route now than it did before p.s., even though it gave up a lot of market share. DL has recently surpassed it as the #2 in enplanements on the route.

It means (in this case) these 13 specifically configured 752's are dedicated exclusively to the JFK-LAX/SFO routes, and are not scheduled on any other routes.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Well Y is basically Economy Plus on it. Nice leg room and all...no meal serivce now on Y... only BOB. Business and first are of international standards of United ... bit better actually than their standard international.

Does anyone know if there are any scheduled repositioning flights between LAX and SFO that operate with p.s. aircraft? I'm under the impression that there aren't.

I have had the pleasure of flying F on a couple of occasions and I found the journeys to be way and above anything I have ever experienced on a domestic flight in the US. The seats were very comfortable, food was extremely good. I personally couldn't fault it.

All flights LAX/SFO-JFK are scheduled p.s. there is no mix of non versus p.s. flying

No. However p.s. 757s have been known to show up for lucky few folks as substitutions to other cities.

With 13 birds, they should slap winglets on them and turn them across the pond.

The PS flights are great even when you're flying in Y. Every seat has a power port and with the extra room you can actually get some work done as you're winging across the country. The downside is that they stopped serving free meals in Y, but the buy on board isn't horrible if you don't get a chance to purchase before hand.

I have flown PS several times in both classes. Its the way flying should be. I love it and try to arrange it any chance I can. As for how much it costs i have had round trips from LAX to JFH under 400, but that was back in January of this year.

Why? UA has more 747's 777's and 767's than anyone else to put on those routes.

Before p.s. the 767-200 fleet was dedicated to the same routes. LAX/SFO-JFK are such and important business routes that they require 3 class service for every flight. AA still has a dedicated fleet of 3 class 767-200s for the same routes. UA took a risk in using a narrowbody on such important routes, which significantly reduced capacity. Unlike AA, UA decided to retire the 762s and p.s. some 757s. AA now has more capacity with the two aisle planes, but they are very old.

As mentioned, all UA JFK-LAX flights are p.s., except for an occasional MX substitution, usually a 763. The UA website is notorious for not indicating p.s. flights consistently. From the seatmap however, it is clear that it is a p.s. plane.

I flew PS once, redeye, SFO-JFK, business class.

Bad. Old plane, old seat, totally uncaring crew.

I agree UA int'l business is not much better but they compare so badly with other airlines (for int'l business I mean, for JFK-SFO/LAX, I guess they enjoy the fact that competiton is even worse).

I took LAX-JFK-LAX Business Class in Row 9 (exit row).... amazing. So much legroom it was scary... you could actually lay down flat completely in front of me if one wanted to. I thought the food was great. Boarding and Deplaning were much faster because there are also less people on board. For me... it's worth it.. .even in Y. I don't think other carriers are better on LAX-JFK. JetBlue from Long Beach - JFK with the DirectTV might be more entertaining and slightyly cheaper... but I think the room and less people are more important to me. I get enough tv in my life. p.s. is the best transcontinental. worth the extra money... especially for business travelers.
