IAH Weather...US(HP Paint)CR9 Diverts To MSY (pic)

Tue May 22, 2007 6:57 am

Looks like there may be weather moving into IAH. We just had a USAirways Express CR9 (in America West Express colors.....which we never see any more here) divert into MSY. He was operating ASH 2617 CLT-IAH. Here's a photo of him while he was here a little while ago:

And here's his CLT-IAH (oops, MSY) route:

Maybe not, or at least not so bad. I see they have a ground stop in for IAH from 1st tiers, and HOU from ZHU/ZFW, so it looks like they probably captured most of the originating short and medium haul flights into the Houston area.

The airport still had a rate of over 100 when I checked 20 minutes ago.....but those east coasters are going around the back of the weather over DFW and south over the Gulf!

Yippie.....rain just started with drops the size of silver dollars, bet the rate goes to hell now and hope the rate for AUS/SAT is way up!  Smile

HOU stop cancelled, but IAH stop extended until 1400z, and also covers 2nd tier centers...

Looks like CO 781 (ANC-IAH) wound up in DFW this morning.

Quite a few of the IAH airplanes ended up in places other than their planned destination......traffic count and some airports were higher this morning!  Smile

We're used to the CO and WN diversions, but the ones that really get us going are the IAH Euro flights that divert in here every year or so (LH, KL, BA, and AF.....along with the occasional CO 777).

Why do the Euro flights divert to MSY when they don't have a presence there? In the case of BA, if IAH is inaccessible due to weather, why not divert to DFW, a city they actually serve? Or, if they know the weather at IAH is going to be bad, why not make an enroute diversion to ATL?

I can only guess that the specific nature of these storms means it is truly a last-minute decision.

Still, it must be nice to see the odd diversion equipment at MSY!

More like, why do they divert to MSY when it's going to get hit next by the storm? Most of these south eastern Texas storms are moving east, south east. Rarely do you see one going west. AUS can handle 777 traffic (rwy length).

Good point. Maybe they feel that they are in a better position to fly 'around' the storm front as it moves east?
I'm guessing stopping at ATL or DFW is not a "fuel and go" situation, and probably means they'll be on the ground 2 hours at a minimum. MSY must be quicker.

Had CO 72 (HNL - IAH) end up in SAT, wish I would have been there to see a 767-400 here.

I was inbound from SLC to IAH this morning around 1400Z and ZHU gave us holding instructions to Rock Springs (I think that's the VOR) but then canceled the hold, thankfully. These daily thunderstorms get so darn annoying! Someone fix Houston, please.

Hey you behave now....it isn't like no other place in the world has weather that creates delays/diverts and more fun as that.

why not make an enroute diversion to ATL

For the very reason above I'd imagine.......almost 2 hrs away from IAH and things don't always require a divert 2 hrs out or even to be in holding, if the weather does something else from the forecast your in.

MSY is a good spot, I've actually spent quite a bit of time on the ground there everyone at the hardstand at the light pole waiting for gas!  Smile

Haha, Houston has world-class controllers and crappy weather.

How's life these days? I have my last 4-day out of IAH on May 27 and then transferring to LAX. Hope all is well! You guys haven't done anything bad to me lately...thanks!
