3 Killed In NC Small Plane Crash

Sun May 27, 2007 1:18 pm

Just found this, I apologize if it's already been posted.

"A small plane trying to land Saturday at a private mountain airstrip hit two planes on the ground, killing three people, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The crash occurred about 10:15 a.m. at Mountain Air, a private golf development north of Asheville. The Mountain Air Web site said the resort is 4,400 feet above sea level and has a 2,875-foot runway."

The article also states that the aircraft involved was a 2006 Columbia. From what I can gather from the article, it just sounds like a case of bad piloting, although those parked aircraft are VERY close to the runway. From the photograph by Paul Aranha, it looks like the plane was landing on 14 and could have encountered some crosswinds or something.. But who knows.

The airport is an exclusive, private resort. The owner of the Columbia was from Florida, most likely vacationing in the Western North Carolina area.

RIP to all three people and their families.  tombstone

A/C landed 2/3 down RWY 32, tried to stop and slid into a parked Pilatus. RIP.

This is a shock to me as I am a fan of this development. I even check the web cam on a nearly daily basis just to see what the weather is like there as my folks live not to far from it.

http://wx.mtnair.org/Cameras/ It's down now for obvious reasons.

I would think on occasion that, man, aircraft are parked awfully close to the runway. Blood rule will come into play now for sure.

Although I tend to agree that it's often the case in these situations, it's still not fair to judge without knowing exactly what happened.

Couldn't tell by the wreckage if a Pilatus was involved, but for sure a twin Cessna was.

Everubody is trying to look at once. I think this web cam's capabilities are limited. Only ten at a time for the live shots.

Didn't see it yet so don't know the view or angle, but would you think the camera caught the crash as it happened?

If a Pilatus was involved, it'd sure would've brought that Columbia to a halt quickly. PC-12s are enormous. Columbias seem to have good design and good safety features, though they weren't enough to help these fellows.

Sounds like this accident is a good example of why you should never be hesitant or embarassed about going around.

It's very possible. Whether the camera was pointed at the runway at time time of the accident is unknown. The direction of the camera can be controlled by a web cam viewer.

I actually live about half an hour away from there. I'd go out and make some pictures but I'm in Raleigh right now.  Yeah sure

Especially at an airport like this. Does anyone know if this is Mountain Air's first fatal accident?

I believe so. I think it was a matter of time really the way they had parking so close to the edge of the runway.

I have a fraternity brother in Asheville who could go up there and look around but she's terrified of airplanes and flying in general...darn.

My x-girlfriend's parents live close to that area....(Boone, NC area) LOTS and LOTS of money up there.....!! Their house over looks Wyane Hyzigna and Don Shula's houses... and their neighbor are the Robbie's... of Joe Robbie Stadium. I saw a few mountain side runways I just wondered how they landed on them.

I managed to get this snap shot of the ramp after the wreckage had been hauled away.

Big version: Width: 352 Height: 240 File size: 6kb

I couldn't get any previous shots as the site was overloaded. You can see where the skid marks are leading into the coned area where the final resting place was.

R.I.P. to the victims. My thoughts are with the Mountain Air Community this evening.

Certificate issue date 11 December '06... a damn shame.

PS, my source on the Pilatus was a friend-of-a-friend who also said the accident A/C was a Cirrus. I have only seen one pic that wasn't in detail, so no guarantees (obviously).

Oh my gosh, yes. Loads of retirees too. Lots of Floridians like to come up here to get away from the hot weather. Unfortunately, some of them have more money than they should and become pilots.  Wink

The victims are two doctors from Saint Petersburg..and the wife of one of them, 59 year old Kathleen Freeble.
This is the Saint Petersburg Times first story on the crash...second-day concentrates more on Mrs. Freeble:
