AeroMexico To Start NRT - Tijuana - Cancun

Wed Jun 13, 2007 12:12 pm

AeroMexico will launch service between Tijuana and Cancun eff 07JUL07.

The new link allows connection from Tokyo on the Tokyo - Tijuana - Mexico City flight. The announcement was made by the Mexico's Tourism Board and the tourism board in Cancun, during the Mexicao/Cancun seminar.

AeroMexico launched 2 weekly Tokyo - Tijuana - Mexico City onboard the 777 since November 2006. It's load factor in the first 2-month was about 75%, and rose to average of 85% in 2007. Some flights recorded 97% load factor.

This is better than the 48hour bus rides currently plying the route!

Is this going to be a daily non-stop? This might turn out to be good news for San Diegans - to add to the 777 to MEX we can cross the border and fly on.

No. It is 2x weekly, timed exactly to connect to TIJ-NRT. Flight is already bookable.

But don't forget F9 flies n/s on Saturdays from Lindbergh to Cancun and there will be added frequency next year... It will be interesting to see how the fares compare -- I haven't looked yet.

MEX, yes, as our friends at AM have dropped the SAN-MEX flight completely (for the umpteenth time.)

I doubt bus rides are very useful in this route of more than 4,000kms. TIJ and CUN are in the opposites corners of a large country.

What aircraft will do the TIJ-CUN-TIJ? The B777?

A bus won't do the route on 48hrs, but on 72hrs at least.

I thought the AeroMexico flight to NRT was 3 times weekly ? Are they ever going to expand the schedule or do they only have two weekly slots ?

Very logical step.

The flights to NRT should be increased to 3 times a week whenever possible. CUN, MEX and MTY should be feed into the NRT flight.

TIJ-CUN would take a lot longer than 48 hours by bus. But who does that anyhow, very few people I would imagine.

It was about time! The TIJ stop in the MEXNRT run had the logical need (and so it was planned) to make TIJ become a sort of a mini-hub, where pax can be fed into the B772 and viceversa. TIJ > MXL, HMO, CJS, NLD, MTY, GDL, ACA and CUN are supposed to be scheduled to make convenient connections with the NRT flights in TIJ. CUN is supposed to be just the first one in a series of connecting flights using AeroMexico or AeroLitoral (AeroMexico Connection?) metal.

Well, I think so too. I remember when ANA, some 6 or 7 years ago, was seriously considering Cancun as an extension to its daily NRT-LAX run. They wanted a 2 x weekly full traffic rights authority on the LAX-CUN leg, which naturally was rejected by the Mexican civil aviation authority for obvious reasons.

The Mayan Riviera is about the only area in Mexico which strongly attracts the interest of the Japanese traveller, not only for the beaches and resorts to be found there, but for its proximity to the grandeur of the various Mayan archaeological and cultural sites such as Uxmal and Chichen Itzá.

I hope Aeromexico makes this one work real fine.

Best regards

With the arrival of the fourth T7 in the next couple of months, AM is able to increase service to NRT 3X (in my opinion, the best choice, due to good LF´s), but some a.netters have mentioned this T7 will be probably deployed to EZE.

No real reason they won't be able to do both, as it should only take 2.5 T7s to have daily service to NRT

The Mexican government through its several tourism agencies has been actively promoting itself with the Japanese public. Add to that the big boost in image that Mexico received with the crowing of Miss Japan during the Miss Universe Pageant held in Mexico City last month, and a third weekly frequency expected by AM that will boost capacity on the market and we can see that there will be a lot of demand this summer from Japan to Mexico congruent with recent studies which report record levels of Japanese tourist to Mexico.

Agree.

My opinion, a third weekly NRT flight should come first before upgrading EZE to a 777. EZE is well covered with Aerolineas, Mexicana and the two weekly Aeromexico flights.

I tend to agree, but since both can be done at the same time, upgrading the proven market should happen as well.

I wonder if the Mexico-Japan air services agreement restricts each country to only two flights a week. JL's NRT-YVR-MEX service )codeshared with MX) has been twice-weekly since it started which must be almost 30 years ago. You would think that in that time demand would have grown enough to warrant more than the same 2 flights a week. That, and AM's new twice-weekly frequency, leads me to believe that there may be a frequency restriction in the bilateral.

Maybe, but the slot restrictions at NRT could also play a role.

BTW, how has JL been doing since AM entered the market?

Just a little correction here... Direct air links by JL to Mexico, began in March 1972, almost 36 years ago, on the HND-ANC-YVR-MEX v v run, operating with a DC-8-62 three times a week. Soon after the introduction of 747 service to Mexico in 1975, JAL downgraded frequencies from three to two per week.

The current Japan-Mexico bilateral, which still has to be revised, provides for up to 3 x weekly frequencies by one designated carrier per country.

Best regards

I suppose regional jet flights from SJD to feed the NRT flight would be in order.....

If a third weekly flight works for AM, don't be surprise if the Mexican government makes a phone call to the Japanese government, topic "bilateral talks".

Thanks for the further info. I'd forgotten it was 3/week in DC-8 days. I lived in YVR then and remember watching JL DC-8s arrive and depart. I think they started service to YVR in 1967.
