Wed Jun 13, 2007 4:30 pm

Latest rumour to hit Bloomberg is that Spanair is to make an important announcement tomorrow. Many believe Spanair is going to announce a tie up with private equity firm Apax and Lufthansa for a bid for the big IB!

Maybe LH will buy both JK and IB. They could use MAD as IB's hub and BCN as JK's hub.

With BA owning 10 per cent and having options on a further 27 per cent of IB's equity it would be a very uphill struggle unless the offer was so very high BA could not refuse it. Effectively BA controls the IB sale situation and they will almost certainly decide who owns IB if there is a takeover.

Of course if there was a very high competitive bid for IB it might be made to try to force up the price of the 63 per cent of their equity that BA does not effectively control. But if this was done to muddy the waters there would be a danger for the bidder that BA would accept the bid and effectively finance a proportion of their planned long haul re-equipment programme with a competitor's money.
