Same thing here in Europe. I was coming to GVA from LHR at 19h50. Flight was delayed for at least one hour. Bad weather caused the airport to halt departures for 15 minutes, as an outcome my flight was the 22nd in queue after re-open...

22nd! This is LHR...

SWA departures out of BWI are anywhere from 1-5 hours late, and 1-4 hours late for PHL departures.

We don't have any LGA, EWR or JFK departures, but I'd imagine they'd be just as late, if not more so given the fact that they still have two rather stout lines of storms out to the west of them.

MSY got hammered this evening, still raining but think the thunderstorms may be over for tonight.

An understatement. I was on UA 1577 today IAD-TPA. We boarded almost an hour late, and then sat on the taxiway with our engines shut down for over an hour because everything going south and west out of IAD was on ground stop.

OPNL: in a situation like this, given the fact that SWA does more point to point flying, how is the decision made to overfly certain cities that may be geting slammed by storms to protect as many pax as possible? Does that come from the COO? I'm interested in the decision making process you use.

Quite a nice line approaching NYC right now. COA1802 (EWR-TUS) is not expected to arrive until 3:12 AM Wednesday, almost 6 hours late. There will probably be a lot of departures after this wave of storms. I really do love summer storms, but they do less damage to airports out west, maybe because our storms last less than an hour before wringing themselves out.

And EWR Tower is down now on LiveATC.net. Figures.

I've been listening to PHL tower for the last half hour or 45 mins on LiveATC. They had three in a row break off of the ILS to 27R due to a wind shear alert.

Surface winds on the airport went from calm, to about 2-4-0 at 20, to calm in a span of about five to ten minutes. Last I heard they quoted 1-1-0 at 10.

That red cell is now moving away from there. The ground controller at JFK is now moving all the planes from 13R to 22R for wind change. Most planes are having to start their engines to move, and the will have to shut down again when they get to their new position.

It's really interesting at PHL right now. They are turning the field around for about 30 mins from the 27s to the 9s. They're planning on going back to the 27s shortly

I submit this post from a second rate hotel near the airport in PIT. The PIT-LGA segment of my travels was cxl due to weather and the only thing I could find a the last minute.

Was scheduled on US3892 and we were just about to board when the lights went red and the ramp shut down - was down at least 30 mins - a nasty storm moved direct over the field. From what I could see it looked like most PHL, ERW, JFK, LGA, BOS, ALB and counting were severely delayed or cxl.

I got smart and called the preferred desk - confirmed on the first non-stop in the morning. I guess membership has some advantage.

In CMH DL cancelled the last two LGA and last two JFK flights of the evening. This was after they were already posting 4-6 hour delays. The evening ATL flight cancelled too because the aircraft was stuck in LGA. It was showing out of the gate on time but sat for hours, apparently before being cancelled as well.

I'm sure we'll be feeling the effects tomorrow as well. The morning mainline flight to CVG was already cancelled 12 hours in advance due to unavailable equipment. The 737-800 is (or was) stuck in JFK.

I finally have gotten my head up for some air after 10 hours straight. I guess I can count myself lucky, only 3 diversions for the day. ZNY has been a mess most of the day with westbound departures closed for hours at a time. At this hour EWR is still getting pounded and I have one plane on the deck waiting to take off. Number 25 in line and the crew turn into pumpkins in about 30 minutes.
Warm winds blowing, heating blue skies, and a road that goes forever. I'm going to Texas!

Does anyone know why one of the DL flights to LGA was diverted to ATL? Was is about positioning?

It would seem to me that it is easier to protect the pax by going to ATL, as it allows them more options to get to their final destination.

The decisions are made within the Dispatch office by our team of SODs (Superintendents on duty), and as you can imagine, there are a wide number of variables involved. Decisions are also coordinated with other departments (crew sked, ground ops, MX, etc.) and then communicated to all.

I feel your pain. We had our 2:40pm departure to Kennedy boarded and I am running down the jetway to GSC and close up when the captain comes walking out of the plane and infoms me they are on an hour groundstop. So about 45 minutes later they push back and I make it all the way back to the ops room only to hear them call on the radio and say they are coming back to the gate because the gs was extended for another hour. To make a long story short, they went wheels up at 6:18pm and our last 2 inbounds were cancelled as was our last evening outbound and morning outbound. This weather thing seems to be becoming a weekly occurence.

The Airspace Flow Program (AFP) was expanded from last year's incarnation, and I think that (and the weather that forces it to be used in those new areas) has contributed to this year's delays. Between AFP's for the overall enroute traffic and groundstops/ground delay programs (GSs/GDPs) for various impacted airports, the problems get magnified. Add-in any airline who does their own internal GDP to avoid overloading their station(s) with a flood of flights once the weather allows, and it gets to be a real combo platter of coordination, and often, that just makes the delays worse.

AFPs seem to work (IMHO) when there's an isolated or localized area/line of weather in certain places, but when there's widespread weather like yesterday's LCH-YYZ and everything east from there, it seems to work less well.
