787 To The Paintshop, Opportunity For Photos?

Fri Jun 22, 2007 9:57 pm

This thread reports that the 787 is heading to the paintshop on 25 or 26 June.
787 Assembly Update (Detailed) - Part IV (by IAD787 Jun 15 2007 in Civil Aviation)

Are there any spotters that will be able to provide some pre-paint photos of the 787?

Or, is Boeing going to take a cue from the automakers and try to disguise the 787 prior to official roll out?

I reckon it may be a bit difficult to paint the thing in a weird black and white checkerboard theme.  Big grin

They can print it on a 4 foot wide decal and just put it on the side, just like on model plastic airplanes.
Now so, have ye time fer a pint?

Chances are, they'll move it under the cover of night. With the phase of the moon now, it won't be completely dark, but probably dark enough to obscure any long range photography equipment. Would be nice to see it though. I've already asked for one of our numerous Boeing loads to Everett that delivers on the 8th, so I have at least a chance to see the roll-out in person.

I would be more interested in seeing her when she comes out of the paint shop. Do we know when that is, and where/how will Boeing "hide" the "completed" B-787 until 7-8-07?

Well, no one really needs any long range photography to grab a phot on its way to the paint shop and back, since the highway is practically right next to the hangar doors and has to cross the highway to get to and from the paint shop. But, nonetheless, it will be done under the cover of darkness. Unless they create a really big sheet to cover it.
Roger that, turning to our "other" left

Agreed. I think Boeing not only move the 787 under the cover of darkness but it won't surprise me if they also put a large sheet on the entire aircraft. I can imagine Boeing doesn't want anyone to photograph this milestone before the aircraft itself "goes public". I wouldn't even surprise me if Boeing will put some security along the path the 787 will follow when it is moved to the paintshop, even in the cover of darkness. This is Boeing's most valuable jewel we are talking about Big grin

As they have to cross over a public road, perhaps they will ask the local govenment to close the road during the transfer to prevent normal people from being able to take pictures and for 'security' reasons.

Remember that folks will be viewing it in an unpainted form on the Boeing tour right up to, and including, the day it goes into the paint shop.  Smile

I can pretty much assure you that will not happen, as WA-526 is a primary traffic corridor. Boeing moves planes at night to minimize the impact on traffic. I once saw a 747 go across in 1978 and traffic just *stopped* in each direction on the highway to watch it go.

Confirmed. I took the Boeing tour three weeks ago (and saw the 787). The tour guide told us that planes are always moved to the paint shop between 3 AM and 5 AM. This is because there is less vehicle traffic in the Boeing facility, and when the planes are towed across the bridge over the highway, it reduces accidents with people stopping to look.
I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.

The big sheet rollout is not without precedent....

Does anyone know what the 787 will be doing on the 9th and the 10th of July?
Can it be seen on the normal Boeing tour on those days?

Why would they try to hide it, if they allow this blog to detail it's progress? There's a lot of pictures there,,,

As much as I appreciate the excellent coverage of the 787 by IAD787, and although I find it difficult to restrain myself from trying to look up the latest photos, I think we should all probably wait now until the actual roll-out. That way, the roll-out will be much more special.

Yes, but the original post asked if there would be some spotter photos of the aircraft unpainted, on the way to the paint shop.
Since B isn't making a big secret of the assembly, I suppose that it will be possible for spotters to snap some pictures of that.

Why its not a top secret, black world project.

Why would Boeing want to hide the 787? They want all the publicity they can get, they are in the business of selling airplanes.
